Michigan, get it together!

#1

strawman

I've started a conversation (it's a multi-person PM if you haven't been in one yet) about trying to set up a time and place for halforumites to get together.

It's loosely based around south east michigan, and you're welcome to join the conversation if you have any interest in discussing it, I just didn't want it to be a regular thread that would tend towards chaos with little actually getting decided.

PM me if you want to be invited to the conversation. We're within driving distance of Toronto, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana.

Nothing's been decided yet, this is just the beginning of talking about it to gauge the level of interest and what kind of get together we want.

Well I'll stop by and say hi; my other half and I will be swinging up to Pictured Rocks next month, so you won't be left out!

I haven't been to pictured rocks yet. Looks beautiful, though - I have a friend that makes it up there at least once a year to camp.

Last time I went up there was to visit Tahquamenon Falls. While I was sleeping in the passenger seat my friend ran over a porcupine with my car. The porcupine ran off, and we were picking quills out of the front drivers side tire for some time.

Keep me in the loop. No promises that I can make it up from CoMo, but I'm always looking for excuses to visit my family in Chicago and could probably make a weekend of it.

Sorry to disappoint, but my good balloonish looks are all CGI. The director wanted to use wires and camera tricks, but the contacts needed to give me that empty eye look we're just too irritating.

I seem to recall a certin OM NOM picture I did for you and your Stein-spawn.

Also, I agree about Southern michigan not working. Let's go to the Dells! House on the Rock is AWESOME.

Yeah, but it's all back-woods driving. And it's still gonna be about a three hour drive for me to there - IF I was able to get off for it.

It also takes me about two hours to get to the Dells/Lake Delton area.

Yes, I live in BFN Upnortderehey Wisconsin. I'm not fond of it much, either.

EDIT: Hey, I know - why don't we meet somewhere in, like, the MIDDLE of Wisconsin? There's this place called "Stevens Point", located where US 10 and US 51 meet in (roughly) the middle of the state.

Well, it's been a year and we still haven't gotten it together.

But I've proposed three dates and times in June that should work for those who already expressed an interest, so if you're going to be near Michigan by pure luck on the second, third, or fourth Tuesday of June in the evening, come join the conversation!

We'll probably also meet again later in the summer with more notice on a weekend for those of you that are interested in traveling just to visit people from the forum.

Vacation starts the morning of the 15th... right after payday. The Henry Ford museum is looking likely, the Tigers are at home vs Baltimore, and I can troll my friends and family down here by visiting The School Up North. :D

Run the Big Ten 10K with me on July 27th! Then we can drink until we negate all the calories we burned!

Aren't vacations supposed to be relaxing? Weird that you would take a vacation somewhere that you've been so vocal about hating in the past. :p

Alrighty then. Three nights booked in Dearborn June 16-19. I need to fit in The Henry Ford, Tigers-O's at least once, The Big House, and whatever else comes to mind.

(ETA: According to the Wikipedia, Dearborn has the largest Arab-American population by percentage in the US. That means... shawarma. I've already added Al-Ameer and Tuhama's to my Google Maps. :))

Enresshou

DarkAudit, definitely stop by Zingerman's when you're in Ann Arbor. It's expensive, but their sandwiches are amazing, and they have an incredible selection of cheeses, olive oils, chocolates, deli meats, baked goods, etc. And you can get free samples of EVERYTHING (one of their hallmarks is they train every employee to provide five-star service. I wanted to try a sample of one of their chocolates, and the employee encouraged me to try literally every chocolate they had to make my decision.)

#48

BErt

Also add to your agenda stopping at American and Lafayette Coney Island restaurants before the baseball game. Yes, you have to eat a coney dog at both of them and then decide forever which one is better. I'm pretty sure it's a law.

We haven't decided what to do, but those that are available and interested in joining us should PM me or another michigander to be added to the PM conversation.[DOUBLEPOST=1369315948][/DOUBLEPOST]

Greenfield Village was a blast (Thanks BErt !). Didn't even know the vintage baseball game was a thing until I got there. Al-Ameer was busy. It was just me, so I didn't have to wait for a table. ~$5.50 for a meat shawarma and pop.

Got cheap seats for tonight's Tiger's game. Biggest concern is where to park. Anyone?

#52

Enresshou

Enresshou

There's a whole bunch of empty lots around the stadium; I normally just get there a bit before gametime and drive around a bit until I find an open one. You can find parking for $10 or so.

#53

BErt

I usually park at the Elwood Bar & Grill garage. It's $20, but it's right next to Comerica Park.

But like Enresshou said, you shouldn't have any trouble finding cheaper options around the area if you prefer.

How's the AT&T reception at Comerica? At PNC Park and Consol arena in Pittsburgh it sucked. At Nationals Park in DC it sucked.

As with any sporting event, it depends on how many other people are trying to stay connected at the same time. This usually means you have pretty crappy service (unless you're one of the first ones to connect) unless one or more of these are parked outside.

Since it's just the O's in town on a midseason Monday, I don't see them spending the resources. :(

If anyone else is going, I'll be around the Kaline Corner. $6.95 on StubHub with the service fees. :D

(ETA: Freep says Comerica should have wifi for fans by sesason's end)

BTW, michigan halforumites are going to be at Ashley's in Ann Arbor at 6pm tomorrow night, in case anyone else just wants to hop a flight or something.

You know.

Pre-ashley's kibitzing will occur at my house.

Don't worry, the kids don't bite.

Well, except the one we call bitey, but he's had his shots.
