What's this then?
Minecraft is a game about mining and building things. I'm one of the admins on the Halforums server for the multiplayer portion of the game, where we build a virtual
How do I get in?
We just got on a shiny new host, paid for by Dave. It's got mods that lets us set user access levels, meaning any new users logging in will be able to look around but not change anything. For security reasons, you need to ask an admin for a higher access level, preferably in this thread so you can introduce yourself to everyone at the same time.
Anyway, for now, you'll find the address right here:
Should you wish to speak with your fellow builders, there's also a Ventrilo server available at 66.135.59.124:3804.
Are there any rules of conduct?
I have a high opinion of this community, and I haven't really felt the need to articulate a list of do's and don't yet. Not all things are self-evident to a n00b though, so here are a couple of bullet points:
- Don't be a douche.
- Don't alter other people's creations without their permission.
- Don't clutter the skyline with ugly things like single-block dirt towers. They can be seen from far away and ruin the view for everyone. Of course, dirt towers are useful as building scaffolds and are allowed as temporary tools.
- Be VERY careful with fire. One spark the wrong way and you could burn a whole forest. If you look at the cartographs below, you can see that someone already started an accidental fire in the east. Funnily enough, it's frozen in time until someone comes within viewing distance -- when that happens most of the trees in that whole area will burn. I hope it'll look all scorched and bad-ass after that, but if it doesn't, I'll have to delete those chunks or generate new trees in an editor.
The initial player spawn point is protected from alterations. You'll have to move away from it to be able to change anything.
Where do I start building?
Don't be afraid to build where convenient. People tend to bugger off into the distance so as not to bother anyone. This makes it hard for others to see your stuff and the server difficult to navigate. An area that looks like a neighbourhood is also far more interesting than ones with isolated structures. If an area is empty and doesn't look like someone's backyard, it's yours if you want it. Should you accidentally build where someone doesn't want you to, I can always use my admin powers to move your work if it's above ground.
