Mirror's edge is incredibly dissapointing

Yeah I know I am way late to the party. But I was just wondering if anyone else played this and what they thought. It has some cool moments, but it just fails in the overall execution. Some of the 'puzzles' are more of a case of getting a jump just right, and the combat is a joke. Im going to try to beat it, mainly because I heard it was really short.

I was interested in trying this one day but I find it amusing and sad that a game about a courier may not deliver. ;p

I liked it, as a fan of parkour, bought it for the PS3 at launch. I appreciated it as new game design, but was also expecting more action. I also bought it again for the Xbox at Target clearance for $10 to let a friend play it. I have yet to play the DLC, so no idea about its replayability.

Overall, I liked the game. It's biggest shortcoming is that it's too damn short. I thought it delivered as far as gameplay go, though. Protip, try to avoid combat if at all possible.

I don't mind the game that much. Some of the jumps can be infuriating, however.

As for the combat, if an enemy has a glowing red outline it means you can probably take 'em easily, but if they don't, you're better off just running away.

Yeah, thats no problem. The combat is easy. My biggest gripe is the jumps that you have to hit just right. and the puzzles that really just involve finding the one place to climb.

Oh dear god. There was a level in the original Tomb Raider that took me for-smurfing-ever because I couldn't see the the little cave I had to jump over to, even when I knew where to look for something. I Spent several days wandering through that smurfing level looking for a lever or movable boulder that I might have missed, when it turns out the only puzzle was deciphering the PSone graphics.

It was, for anyone who might remember the game, the underground level with the aqueduct and Midas statue. I couldn't find the little cave that you reached by jumping from the second level of the aqueduct to a ledge on the opposite wall, then crawling along the wall and jumping back across to the aqueduct side.

I really hated the cutscenes. It looked stiff, and I've got no idea why it was needed in a game that looked as good as it did out of the cutscenes.

It was ok, I hoped it was way more then it turned out to be though. So after one playthrough I never touched it again and don't intend to ever do so.

The movement is a dream. I even enjoyed the jumping puzzles and the 'jump just right' stuff. For me it felt great.

The combat is miserable. The writing is miserable. All the of the extras and concept art that got scrapped painted a much, much more interesting and stylish game than what was in the final product. If they made a game like it with competent pacing and decent first person fighting - hell, maybe spent some more time expanding on the short news stories and parodying consumerism and nanny states - It'd be one of my favorite games of all time.

I only tried the demo. It looks cool but I hated doing the long distance jumping.

I haven't played it, but I couldn't get over how high that chick's eyes were on her head. They broke rule #1 of drawing faces, and she looks like an alien Gray because of it. Not to mention the almost stereotypical eyes, which remind me of the way they'd draw Japanese people in WWII era comic books. "Me so sorree!"

You should have seen the image of her after some Asia guys got a hold of her... they couldn't understand why Americans would be interested in a woman so plain, so they rounded her face, made her paler, made her eyes bigger, and increased her cup size by like 3 sizes. It's almost shocking.

The thing of it is, I'm not sure she was supposed to be sexy, rather than realistically athletic.

But yeah, her eyes were about 1/4 inch too high. A little lower and it'd look nearly perfect.

Never played the game, but it is highly ironic that a game that is essentially about freedom is so linear.

Don't suppose you still have a link to that, do you?

Looks like I was wrong about the paleness, but they did give her longer hair, touched up her nose, and got rid of the face tattoo. Here's the first article about it. Here's the creator's reaction to the image. Here's the article about the japanese reactions.

That's an interesting revision. The face makes the character look a bit too youthful, though, honestly. Like a teenager instead of a hard-edged 20-something.

I think it just makes it look like she has no business doing the things she does. Faith was supposed to powerful and athletic... like she had been living on the run for a long time. Making her "cute" is counter productive to the kind of character she was. Besides, I think she is plenty attractive as she is.

Agreed. Ashley Williams from Mass Effect is another example - attractive without being cute and adolescent looking. She looks tough but still appealing, like Erica Cerra (Jo Lupo in Eureka) or Claudia Black (Aeryn Sun in Farscape).

I actually like the fan art, aside from the totally unneeded boobjob. Then again, I'm not a big fan of face tattoos.

It's the Japanese... if she doesn't look 16 she can't be a main character...

and man, i still remember the discussions surrounding that pic... ah, the internet.

There were only 2 parts where combat annoyed the hell out of me, but for the most part, you don't even have to deal with it. It does have a really low replay value, though, unless you want to try to get the no kill trophies/achievements.

I had pretty much the same reaction as OP. Couldn't get over how so many of the puzzles had only one solution, and so much of it was hitting the right button at the exact right moment, over and over and over again.

For a game about parkour, there was very little fluidity in the control scheme.

I thought the best part of the whole game was the time trials, I enjoyed the crap out of trying to find the best possible route through all the levels and perfecting my movement and jumps

On one hand, I admit that I totally find the "retouch" more attractive, but I also totally agree with the producer about trying to make a female character that isn't just a curvaceous babe. I do agree with the eyes being slightly too high but that apart from that I think the retouch is pretty sad.

I think I'd prefer to spend my money on Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. It's only $2.50
