Not a motivational one. Just a oddly/poorly translated poster from what I understood from the thread I got this from.

You don't want to see the rest of it. It kinda ruins the imaginitive part of the tease.

Yes, I've seen the reveal and I like the tease better.

Someone had posted the full gif on the old boards, I don't remember who though, nor do I have the link.

However, it does add to the tease, so I suppose I'm helping?

Holy crap, I was actually playing Super Mario World a few days ago, and to get to a secret exit in one of the levels (the one that looks like the one in the pic, actually), you have to jump with yoshi, and then jump off of yoshi and let him fall to his death.

It immediately made me think of that pic, and then I realized that had to be what it was referencing.

#63

Just so you know, I edited out one with nude girl in body paint. If we have to do this we'll put in a quick note. The poster itself was fine, but blongs in the NSFW area.

Maybe a NSFW Motivational Poster thread over there?

#64

I think the motivational poster thread is nsfw to begin with. Let's just move the whole thing there. Less hassle that way. Otherwise, you'd be redirecting nsfw images every other day.

Suppose so.
It's one of the threads I never go into at work or school so either way it won't matter. I'd rather not have to treck into the perv zone to see it when I want to but.. *shrug*

My fault, sorry.
Is it still public lashings or being that its a new forum we have a new form of punishment, like a spanking machine?

It's more insidious. Your post simply disappears...and then after a while, so do you.

Neither. Just a brief note unless it was obviously on purpose. Then you might get publicly ridiculed.

You know what... There needs to be an anime named Pumpernickel that's brain-fuckingly weird. Or at least that's a good title for a anime with a poorly translated name.

This is why, should I ever have children, I am going to beat up any doctor who dares to mention Ritalin to me  I seriously have trouble understanding why some parents would want to dope up their children like that.

There are actual medical reasons to have some children on that type of medication. It's not very common (not nearly as common as the prescriptions) but does exist. I do have a cousin that is on ritalin, it brings him the ability to control himself, but doesn't slow him down in any way at all.

Not all that are on it need it, but there are bad parents out there too. Seen too many parents that just don't want to be a "bad guy" and teach their kids how they should behave, and just want a pill to "make them settle." Those parents need to be hung.

a=b is a perfectly valid assumption. Variables can be equal to each other.
The problem isn't that they can't be equal. I'm saying that they ASSUME IN THE BEGINNING BEFORE THEY EVEN START that a=b AND IS TRUE. Through the rest of the problem, we know that a=b IS NOT true, and the assumption is therefore incorrect from the very start.

It is an invalid assumption, since the assumption is that it is TRUE, when it is, in fact, FALSE.

EDIT:
While a can equal b in OTHER examples, it cannot in THIS example, which is what the whole argument is about.

These only work because the decimal is repeating. The more repeats you use, the more true it is that .99999999=1

We assume in your example, that the repeats go out infinitely, which means that we really do approach 1 if you have .9 with an infinite number of nines repeating..

If you don't use repeating decimals, we end up with something like this:
X = 0.99999
10x = 9.9999
10X - X = 9.9999 - 0.99999 (note that 10X without repeats is 9.9999 not 9.99999)
9X = 8.99991
X = 0.99999

a can still be equal to b throughout the problem. The only thing wrong is they divide by 0 and get 1=2. a=b is still valid. If there's a problem in one step (in this case, from 3 to 4), that doesn't mean earlier steps are incorrect.

Example:
1+1=2
1=3

That's wrong. 1 doesn't equal 3. That means the math is wrong, not the assumption that 1+1=2 is wrong.

It's not an assumption that a=b, it's given. To do the proof, you have to work within the framework that a=b from the very start. At any point where a cannot equal b, you're done. You cannot go any further.

It's not the a=b that's the problem. It's the division by zero that invalidates the proof. You might want to bone up a bit on "mathematical proofs" for greater understanding.

We've established that, in order for a=b, it has to be a=b=0. Now, we prove that a=b=0 is false. Therefore, a=b is invalid, and the given statement is false. Now, using what we have found within the proof, we can say that a=b is a false given from the very beginning.

i.e. since we've discovered that division by zero invalidates the proof, we can say that the problem IS the given that a=b, since it is impossible.

EDIT:
YOU might want to read up on a little thing called "proof by contradiction", which is what we're given. We want to prove that a cannot equal b, so we are given a=b. We proved a cannot equal b, and therefore the given is a false one.

We don't want to prove a cannot equal b. The poster is trying to prove that 1=2. That's not proof by contradiction.
http://www.delphiforfun.org/Programs/Ma ... iction.htm
The "Proof by Contradiction" is also known as reductio ad absurdum, which is probably Latin for "reduce it to something absurd".

Here's the idea:

1. Assume that a given proposition is untrue.
2. Based on that assumption reach two conclusions that contradict each other.
What the poster is doing, instead, is using faulty math to try to prove 1=2. We are "given" a=b. That means it's absolutely true. We must then prove 1=2 using mathematical steps along the way. 1=2 is our result we must prove, given a=b.

The division by zero is where that proof breaks. However, there's no point in me repeating myself if you're just not getting it, so, that's all I have to say on it.

#328

Ross

Ross

Alright, I just thought of a great way to put it:

In algebra, when working with equations, you end up with the same thing you started with, just in a different form. Let's start with a=b=1. At the END of the proof, this is not true, and therefore we are not allowed to START with a=b=1. This is true for all cases when a and b are not equal to 0.

Now take the a=b=0 case. As we work through the proof, we discover a division by 0, and cannot finish the proof. Since we cannot END with a=b=0, we cannot START with a=b=0.

Therefore, we cannot START with a=b, since we cannot END with a=b.

I hope that clarifies things, if it had not yet been clarified.

The division by zero is where that proof breaks. However, there's no point in me repeating myself if you're just not getting it, so, that's all I have to say on it.

Okay, so we try to prove 1=2. We cannot. Therefore we have proven that 1 cannot equal 2, which is, in its nature, a proof by contradiction. While the math wasn't TRYING to do a proof by contradiction, that is what we ended up doing.

That's one way of looking at it. But the proof still broke at the division by 0, not at the a=b. That's the whole point. At the division by 0 step, the entire proof falls apart. not at the a=b step, which is a "given statement".

Look at the poster again: "Given: a=b" Is the first line. The "given" line is the "postulate" or "axiom" of the proof. These are to be accepted as absolutely true. Thus the a=b line is not where it breaks down.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axiom
http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/54726.html
The study of geometry is the first place I encountered an axiom
system.
You start with certain "undefined objects," in this case "point,"
"line," "plane," "length," "area," "between," etc. Then you are given
certain statements about them which you are to accept as true. These
are called Postulates or Axioms. They appear in the very first part of
your book on Plane Geometry. Examples might be:
That's the whole point that's me and DarkAudit have been trying to make to you. a=b is an axiom. It's not where the proof fails. a can equal b. You just can't go from a=b to 1=2, and the failure point is the division by zero. This kind of proof reading (pun intended) is fundamental math.

Did I ever, EVER say that since a=b is false for THIS problem, that it must be false for ALL problems? NO

I said it was wrong for THIS PROOF. When I originally stated "a cannot be equal to b", it was in reference to THIS PROOF, not to a=b in general.

Fuck yeah you can have a=b, IN OTHER PROBLEMS, WHICH ARE NOT BEING DISCUSSED AT THE MOMENT. In THIS problem, we find that a=b is impossible, and therefore WE CAN ASSUME FROM THIS CONCLUSION that a=b cannot be true from the very beginning. Like I said, if you cannot END with the SAME THING YOU STARTED WITH, like a=b=0, then it CANNOT BE a=b=0, or any other number for that matter.

That is what is wrong with THIS PROOF. If you want to talk about any other proofs in which a CAN equal b, be my guest, but that is not what we were doing... or at least not what I was doing.

Just wanted to point this statement out.

Here's a proof of my own, starting with:
Given: 1=2.

Oh look, it's a given! Because it's a given, does that make it true? NO! It's only there to let us ASSUME IT'S TRUE. If we can prove it's FALSE, then it IS false. It's how proof by contradictions WORK. To say this proof is NOT a proof by contradiction just makes you lose all of your math credibility.

EDIT:
I'd like to also add in the little fact that my stance is backed up by my girlfriend, who is TEACHING algebra. She has also spoken to other teachers who teach algebra about this. If they're all wrong, then our kids taking math are fucked, considering New York has one of the best education systems in the country (paired with California at the top). If they're wrong, how much worse is it elsewhere?

I've said all that I can say about it. If he/they still don't believe me, then they're in some sort of fantasy world. I know my math. I have many people around me who know math. I and they all have the same thoughts on this proof.

Aw, man, missed the math argument.

You guys are a bunch of idiots, you know that? There's a funny proof. It has a mistake in it because in one of the steps you're dividing by zero. THE END. It's not a proof by contradiction, it's not anything but a high school level mistake. It doesn't prove anything one way or the other except that dividing by zero is a very bad idea.

It seems to pull a random picture off of flickr and there's a time window for people to make submissions, and then voting begins for the best one. Winners are archived there. If you're playing Forumwarz, winning a round of INCIT garners you a chocolate scoop (which is part of the domination endgame).

#412

Gared

Yeah, it's getting to be very amusing watching all of the people who live on flood plains every year. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for them for losing their houses and suffering property damage each year, but honestly, why would you go back every time? And yes, I understand that with mortgages and such you don't always have a lot of choice, but if your home is completely destroyed and you have to take a new loan to rebuild, and you rebuild in exactly the same place, what have you just accomplished?

Two years ago the annual flooding started to get really bad, and they proclaimed that the flooding that year was a 100-year flood, then the next year (last year) the flooding was even worse and they called it 500-year flooding, this year is even worse in some places, what's it going to be now?

Though I have to admit some level of shame at least, it really pisses me off that this has been completely crippling our berry crops the last 3 years and I haven't been able to get any decent local fruit for jam making. Shouldn't people's lives and houses be worth more to me than homemade jam?

They fought against Commie invaders first, then, when England and the US were too busy fighting themselves to help them defend themselves, they allowed Germany to help protect their borders. Heck, they even fought against Nazi Germany, too. The only reason they didn't fight with Nazi Germany more was because they had a common enemy - the USSR.

Bleh, you edited before I posted. Oh well :-P

Yeah, in the winter war they were independent, but they did fight alongside the Nazis in Russia, but then fought against the Nazis in Lapland. Its a really mixed bag with them which is why I removed the comment.

I dunno, reminds me waaay too much of Britney Spears. And i wouldn't touch her with a 10 foot barge pole. Not that i know what the hell a barge pole is.
My guess is, its a pole used to push a barge through shallow, or stagnant water. I'd guess it'd have to be pretty dang long and probably really nasty at one end.

I'd wiki it but I'm to lazy.

Damn. I can't decide what to post here:

'So, like a wang.'

'That's what SHE said!'

'You know, I have one of those. It's HUGE.'

Etc.

Decisions, decisions.

"If the end of your wang is covered with a huge clump of blackish browinish stuff then ya..."

"I hope you didn't have to pay much for her"

"I'm guessing you also have the barge to go with it"

etc. etc. :teeth:

Actually, if the pit ends in an inverted cone (the sides converge) then, technically, there's no bottom, only converging sides.
