Man, I still use it weekly.

Anybody know of a super-easy-to-use simple image editor that would fill the gap?

If we're talking Windows and free, I'd say Paint.NET is hard to beat. Also available as a choco package.

If Windows and paid, I have been told (but don't know first-hand) that PaintTool SAI is the best in terms of relative price/quality, and still simple to use. Costs about $48 USD at the moment (always 5400 yen).

If you're willing to stretch your definition of "super-easy-to-use," even a little then there's always the GIMP, of course.

Oh I've used that in the past... when I had to. Very much stretching the definition of "easy to use" IMO, but thanks for trying to help out.

Ever since I started using Paint.net I've stopped using windows paint.

Still mourn Image Composer, but I haven't bothered to load that on a system in many years.

Dammit, that's so annoying. Not that Paint was great, but I don't have Photoshop on my laptop and as others have said, it was easy image editor.

I use it every day. To just take a screenshot and draw a big red circle around it "THIS BIT HERE" there was nothing easier. Paint3D is a horror in comparison. I'm sure it has 10 times the tools and everything for creators and all that, but...Anyone who needed any sort of image capabilities already used something else. it's like discarding Notepad to get people to use Word. I use both, but for very different things.

I don't know. I found that installing GIMP was harder than actually using it, but I had plenty of experience using image editing apps before I first tried it, and this was also back when you had to have X11 installed. I think the latest GIMP builds are native apps. I suppose if you're looking for a REALLY simple editor, KidPix is still on the market, or there is the previously mentioned Paint.NET which is probably the closest equivalent to "MSPaint Pro."

You might be able to do all that (screenshotting and minor point-to-the-thing-ing) with the Snipping Tool, if you're on a Windows OS newer than XP. Either search for it on the search bar, or Win+R snippingtool.

I highly recommend just doing it in a Google Drawing.

Skitch was much better. Unfortunately Evernote bought it out and then killed it for some reason. I still have it, but one day I suspect it will break.

Put me down as also disappointed paint is going away, but I also use paint.net routinely and it will fill the void more than adequately.

I use that, extensively, as well.

I went reading up on this, and apparently it's not really dead. It's an Explorer/Edge situation. They're shipping Paint3D instead, which is basically the same program with a few new features.

E.g. "stickies" on mac was around since System whatever, way before OSX. It's been deprecated since Panther, I think, but they still include it and still update it enough to run.

...and there's even two versions. There's the app and the widget, and they each have their own separate databases for maximum incompatibility.
