My sister is the Terminator.

First, let me say that everyone involved is relatively okay and stuff will get better.

I found out today that my sister was involved in an accident yesterday. And not just any accident. One that the cops who showed up said, "I just knew there was going to be a body and not a patient."

She and her husband were shopping at an outdoor place that sells trees and shrubbery (not too big, not too little, etc.) when she came across a pretty big pot for planting that she really wanted. she took a couple of steps towards it when she felt something against the back of her legs, pushing her.

Turns out that a couple of little old ladies were driving to the place, too. When they got there they apparently either didn't brake, hit the wrong pedal, whatever. In the end what they did was sort of run my sister over. And by sort of I mean they slowly but surely drove into her until she was pushed through a plate glass window and into the interior of the store! When they finally got stopped, my sister had already gone through the window which had shattered, and was sitting with 1 leg on top of the hood and the other was pinned between the vehicle and the base of the window - which had given way which probably saved her leg.

In the end, my sister may have a cracked pelvis (x-rays taken at the emergency room were inconclusive - she's having more tests done tomorrow) but for sure has numerous cuts on her face and arms and one really bad one on the back of her neck. How she lived through this is beyond me.

The two little old ladies are terrified, mortified and very, very shaken up. As my sister said, they probably won't drive again even if the one doesn't get her license taken away.

My sister is not losing a leg, nothing was broken, no real bad facial scarring and she wasn't crushed or decapitated. All in all she got away very, very lucky.

My niece went back to the place to get my sister the pot she had been going after. The place gave it to her for free.

So how was YOUR weekend?!? D:

Holy crap! :wtf:

Well, I'm glad to hear your sister wasn't more injured than she was, especially considering how hurt she could have been in that situation. Yeesh!

You're younger than I thought, Dave, I was expecting a Bionic Woman reference. :p

Glad to hear that what must have been a truly horrible moment wasn't as awful as it could have been.

As a matter of fact, I was in a car crash friday. T-boned by a pickup truck going 60. Thank God we were in a Hummer as none of us are injured more than bruises and soreness. I kinda thought this forum's recent string of bad luck might be in play, but this is ridiculous.

My sister was hit by a taxi and won. The taxi came away with a dented fender and a snapped rearview mirror, my sister came away with bruises.

But I got hit by a truck once and emerged unscathed, so I'm not one to talk, I guess.

Glad to hear your sister is okay. :)

First of all, this is what happens when you let your desire for pot override your other senses.

Second, this video:

Glad to hear that your sister came out okay, Dave.

And I agree with the general tone on the board: there should be an age where folk simply should not be driving any more. Mandatory re-testing for driving privileges, and a vehicular test after the age of 60.

But thats discriminating against old people!
To which I say: tough shit, old people. We already have age limits on when you can start driving, is that discriminating against young people or good common sense?

They should really do constant re-testing. Every 5 years or something. I was driving behind someone just the other day who needed her license revoked. She was doing ~45 on the highway, swerving, almost merged onto someone a few times and so on. Finally traffic was light enough that I was able to pass her. I considered calling the cops on her, but I mean I guess it wasn't an emergency and not 911 worthy, and I didn't know the local police office's number. I don't know if she was just drunk at 3pm or if she was just that bad of a driver.

Why hasn't this been passed in every state? I don't think anyone disagrees that retesting at age 60 is not a bad thing.

My dad is hitting the age where he is starting to scare me (82.) It mostly that he's slowing down. Like he runs the back-roads at 65 now, which means he is likely running 58-60. When he tells me that, I ask if he lets the speeders by. Because this is Texas and the speeders have guns.

Holy crap. This has not been a good weekend for vehicles. My friend was out grocery shopping on Saturday night when a girl driving her boyfriend's [STRIKE]monster[/STRIKE]truck backed over the hood of my friend's car.

Glad to hear your sister is safe. And Doc, make sure you stay safe.

I'm not sure, but I think lobbies for senior citizens (like AARP) always block it.

Old people vote and call their congressmen. Young people don't. Laws generally favor old people for this reason.

#31

Matt²

But thats discriminating against old people!
Yes! It is! for the reason that their bodies are breaking down and causing them to forget things such as "which pedal is the brake and which is the gas again?" and killing people! So there is a need for them to be tested to ensure the safety of others.

Glad your sis is ok Dave, and Patr.. bad pot joke! ;D

Dave, did she check the tire pressure while she was at it?

OT, sort of, but the first time I saw the title of the thread, I read it as, "My other sister is the Terminator" and thought it could be either the best bumper sticker, or the most disturbing tattoo, ever.

Wait a minute... In the Americas, once you get your driving license you keep it forever? No retesting of any kind?? No health checks?

Here you need to go to special centers where they check your eyesight, coordination, etc to make sure you can drive safely. You need to do that again every time you want to renew your license, which at first needs to be done every 10 years, at some age it's every 5 years and then (I think) every year. Does this exist in the US of A and Canada?

#34

sixpackshaker

Here, you just take the eye test every 4-6 years.

#35

Well then, there you have a solution: more thorough health checks. No need to forbid old people driving...

The aforementioned old people whine and bitch about how health checks are discrimination and that driving is a right no one can take away from them. Then they mistake the gas for the brake and plow into a bus stop.

In BC, after a certain age I believe you need a doctor to certify you are still fit to drive when you want to renew your license. I don't think it's a very strict test though.

Driving is a privilege, not a right. I know because a fat man named Richard Cody told me.

Seriously, though. Re-test the fuck outta that shit. Also, perhaps give a tougher test the first time around. I felt like it was easy as hell to get my driver's license, aside from the parallel parking bit. Which I have not used in the three years since I got my license.

That depends on which state you're in. Each state's Department of Motor Vehicles has various requirements.

I've never taken any kind of behind the wheel test.

I wish they would re-test this stuff cause I know some people who should not be driving.

#41

My driver's test only lasted about 3-5 minutes, and he never took me out on one of the main roads. It's just a good thing my dad was a great teacher. He made sure I was fit to drive. The fact that that's how little attention they pay to new drivers scares me.

Unfortunately, retesting wouldn't do much for most younger drivers, they can fake good driving habits while being tested or when they see a cop car, but for the rest of the time on the road they just don't give a damn. There is statistical evidence for this. It's why we young peoples have to pay more for car insurance.

Yup. With young drivers it's not lack of skill, it's poor judgement. The reverse is true for old people.
