Hello there, I'm @HCGLNS you might remember me from such threads as

Ladies and gentleman, it's Eggnog Thread V!

It's Time! It's Time! IT'S EGGNOG TIME!

Eggnogonomicon: Milk of Cthulhu

EGGNOG 2: Ovo-lactic Boogaloo

and who could forget the timeless classic, EGGNOG!!!!!

And I'm here today to talk to you about a serious problem facing us all,

LACTOSE INTOLERANT DOOM WEASELS.

For many Doom Weasels, Eggnog Season goes unremarked, because they can't afford eggnog and have no actual concept of delicious eggnog.

So screw them,

IT'S EGGNOG SEASON!

depends on the nog, the big three are bourbon whiskey, dark rum, and brandy. thick and hearty nog use bourbon. for light sweet nog use rum. for shitty nog use brandy hold the nog.

Yeah, for both eggnog and caesars I much prefer there be no booze.

I've been making the Good Eats nog recipe for years, and IMO, bourbon > rum > brandy. Bourbon adds an extra bite that is noticeably missing when using rum or brandy.

Barf. I know you guys joke that I hate everything, but egg nog probably tops my hate list. I have never liked that stuff.

It's the smell.
And that smell carries at least 3 city blocks, making matters worse.

I can only drink about a quarter of a glass at a time. It's very heavy, but I like the flavor of it if it's got the right spices. Although one person I know makes it homemade, and it just looks awful. I saw it in a mason jar in her fridge, and I thought it was bacon fat.

I switched to Silk Holiday Nog a couple years back to combat the thick, heaviness problem. Now I'll have to see if someone has a palatable sugar free option, or if I have to come up with something of my own.

You're removing the fat and sugar. Might as well stir some nutmeg into your water and be done with the charade. ;)

I probably won't be drinking any eggnog this season. I know that sounds weird, but in the past I'd buy a carton and then have a glass. After that, Zach would come out of hiding, grab his precious and slink back into the cave. So even that one glass has a kind of sentimental edge to it. Maybe next year.

I doubt Zach would be happy to hear that.

Why not hang onto the carton until Zach comes back for a visit? I doubt it would ruin the taste or texture much.

That's pretty much my concern. I could happily add the fat back in, as long as it doesn't come with a load of sugar at the same time. I suppose I'll have to do a test run and see if either Splenda or Truvia mixed with egg yolk will allow eggs to be tempered into cream and stay thick and rich. And if I can stand the taste. Or maybe I can do something with raw honey and just drink very small amounts a day. Or maybe I'll wait until next year.

If you just need to get rid of the sugar, there are lots of recipes and options. Here's one recipe:

http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/beverages/r/lowcarbeggnog.htm

It also points out that you can buy sugar free eggnog syrups, such as http://www.davincigourmet.com/products/product_details/?productID=171 with which you can flavor lots of things, such as a sugar free shake.

Of note, there's been a lot of recent press showing that artificial sweeteners are detrimental to weight loss because they kill beneficial gut bacteria. Before that, there were studies that showed artificial sweeteners are perceived by the body as sugars (not just the tongue), and therefore trigger the same calorie storage (i.e. fat building) reaction as real sugars. Of course, if the reason was not weight loss, ignore me.

The reason in my case is good ol' type 2 diabetes, but I have noticed gut bacteria issues, so I try to mix in some Kefir pro-biotic yogurt drink every other week or so.

I've not yet had eggnog this season. I'll make sure to fix that this week.

Reminder to all, homemade is vastly, vastly superior to store bought. They're practically two different drinks. If you find eggnog too heavy, try homemade.

If you just dipped bread/pound cake in egg nog, it would be similar to french toast, but that's not what this recipe is. (Also, I'm not sure french bread turns out very well with a quick bread. Usually you want to use a yeast bread because it will hold together when wet.)

Kati made a pear tart for Christmas. Part of the recipe involves poaching the peeled pears in white wine with sugar, peppercorns, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks, and cloves for about 10-15min and then letting it sit. She also then strained and saved the leftover liquid in the fridge.

You know what's good mixed with lemon-lime soda? This stuff RIGHT HERE. Mmmmmmm….
