All in one or just a printer? All-in-Ones being scanner, fax, copiers, etc. in addition to printing.[DOUBLEPOST=1395424387,1395424095][/DOUBLEPOST]Also is there a price range?

depending on price I may do an all-in-one, otherwise I really just need a printer.

maximum of 300 would be super.

I you want something that you don't have to replace ink on often, you might want to look into laser. Ink jets will need replacing pretty often if you are using them regularly.

I figured when he said colour and high-use, that if he's printing in colour a lot, then he'll want an inkjet. Lasers don't mix colour very well, and can't print on photo-paper (assuming that's a use).

I have a samsung color laser printer and it works great. my mom is switching from an old hp photojet printer that used 6 ink carts to something a little more inexpensive that can do general purpose work.

I guess I didn't think of photos because I'd rather spend 4 cents a print at Walmart rather than blow ink and special paper at home.

It's out of stock online, but this Epson 845 is what I'd buy. 4 ink carts (refillable). If you'd rather go colour laser, then the Samsung CLR415 is a good looking choice. It's printer-only but high quality colours. More expensive, but you'll ultimately save money vs. buying ink, even refillable.[DOUBLEPOST=1395425458,1395425427][/DOUBLEPOST]

Fair enough. I never print photos but my mom does a lot, so I was extrapolating haha

It took me a while to convince my wife to shell out the extra few bucks for laser. Ended up getting a Brother HL-3070CW...color and wireless. Sure, toner is $50 per color, but I've only ever replaced black twice (and I *just* replaced it for the second time) in like 4 or 5 years. And we got kids in college who print out a ton of crap.

Much better than spending $25-30 on ink several times a year.

Get a laser. The "ink" (toner) may be more expensive, but it lasts much longer before it needs to be replaced, and the cartridges never dry out unexpectedly or clog. You will sacrifice color gamut, but the money you save will probably be worth it. Just make sure it's at least 300x300 resolution or higher. For your needs, you might consider the Samsung Printer Xpress C410w, which can be had for about $170 over at NewEgg (sale ends tomorrow!). Its biggest drawback appears to be the (lack of) speed with which it prints.

Dude, they asked you for your advice, and then went ahead and bought a new printer anyway 2hrs later without checking back?
Try not to IToldYouSo too much.

I interpreted it as his mom bought something without telling him until she got home with it.

Also, a "high use" printer for $300? You and I have very different definitions of what constitutes "high use," I think.

it is what it is, I will keep all of your advice in mind when it kicks the bucket in a year or so and invest in something amazing.

Are you prepared to drop $2500-5000?

the question is are my folks? I already own a high end Samsung unit with 24000 page toner canisters. so I am set. they need something that can take a few hundred pages of varied printing and photo prints with scanning and pic bridge for under 300, this is what my mom wanted I guess.

How many people's parents are utilizing a printer to the extent to justify "high use"? What printer manufacturers mean when that comes out is hundreds of pages PER DAY (an office with a common machine). I doubt any home users even approach that. If you're doing 10 a day I'd consider that "high for home" IMO.

That's where I was going, yeah.

~1000+ pages per week would constitute high use. As in, approx 20 ppm, so big it has its own casters, multiple paper tray cassettes, and can collate, staple, sort, etc. "Enterprise class." We need something like that at my office, but upper management won't shell out (especially since our previous ratings book was so awful, worst I've seen in over 10 years, and agencies are bailing)... so we make do with the heftiest floor model discounted discontinued half-off medium duty one we can find.
