I've actually been using Gimp these days on account of Adobe getting smart to my not-so-official licenses, but it seems to get the job done. I'd give it a shot.

After Effects, I have attempted Combustion but never really got the hang of it. Never used Shake, actually almost no one I know uses it, kind of strange really.

Cool. Yeah, both Combustion and Shake aren't major players anymore (I don't even think Autodesk calls it Combustion anymore...) but Nuke and other newer software are more common now. I'm out of the loop as I haven't done any serious compositing/VFX work in a few years and if I do it's mainly AE and Motion now.

Apple discontinued Shake, decided to roll some of the features into their Final Cut suite (Color and Motion are offshoots). Doesn't mean Shake isn't still awesome, just that it is no longer updated and therefore fading into obscurity...which is a shame, since it was (and still is) fully extensible.

It sounds interesting, but really I have so much invested into After Effects these days most other programs are just off my radar, so I don't even know what happens to them. Adobe has pretty much devoured my creative soul in their software.

I was at NAB earlier this year for buisness, and when I actually got some freetime away from my booth, I spent most of it watching the CS5.5 presentation at the Adobe booth (and a quick stop at the WACOM booth to drool over their stuff and wish I could draw worth a damn).
