NEVER FORGET... to make fun of tragedy (irreverent/offensive)

It's been a decade. If you want to remember reverently, consider the many 9/11 threads that have been posted over the last few years. Otherwise, post your face palming, stupid, funny, irreverent 9/11 related stuff here.

I'll get you started:

Seriously tho.... can the media and people please not remind me of this every single year?

YES I KNOW IT WAS HORRIBLE

YES I KNOW WE SHOULDN'T FORGET

That was fine for the first few years.... and 10 year anniversary.

We're now 11 years.... I don't want to be reminded every 15 minutes about this.

It's depressing.

One of my cousins used this day to remind everybody why Obama is evil. Apparently 9-11 wasn't the only thing Obama tweeted about today. How unamerican. Excuse me, I pulled a muscle rolling my eyes.

It is a good time for a reminder article or so... but it is not the only story of the day. Our news still reminds us of the attack on Pearl Harbor every year.

What does your cousin think of NBC and the Kardashians? Apparently NBC was the only network that didn't observe a moment of silence, and instead had some member of the Kardashian family yammering on about the show and her recent boob job.

Oh, make no mistake. He doesn't give a shit about the actual day. He just wants an excuse to slam the president. This was just so convenient for him.

I dunno. Still a pretty significant day. 3k dead in 24 hours. Is the catalyst for a war that is still going strong today. Kind of hard to say "ok it's been a decade we get it" when we're still fighting a war started by it.

That said there's a pretty hilarious picture somewhere explaining how the destruction of the tower that the Eye of Sauron was on was clearly a controlled demolition.

It's been brought up multiple times, but it's never made it to official federal holiday status, at least down here. It is, however, officially Patriot Day; as was approved by Pres. Bush on Sep 4, 2002.

I tried some basic google-fu to see when the last time was that a holiday was designated as an official federal holiday (meaning government employees have the day off), but my google-fu is weak today.

Sorry, I'll never feel comfortable making jokes about 3,000+ deaths. The closest was mentioning a friend's idea for a game: 9/11 Jenga. And I still feel horrible bringing it up.

And (crossposted from my political thread) the vast majority of Afghanis have no idea what 9/11 was or how it pertains to the U.S. being in Afghanistan. When they are shown pictures and given explanations, many of them say "your building was knocked down? Many of our buildings are knocked down."

So am I. So am I. And I did my own share of reflecting today, but I guess I just feel that time goes on. We can honor those people in our hearts today and still carry on... but then I wasn't there. Who could blame someone who was directly affected for not wanting to laugh. I guess I see it both ways, and I'm somewhere in between.

I'm some where in the middle. I'm tired of having to "Never Forget". However, I can't make fun of the day since a friend of my dad's worked at the Port Authority and died in the attacks. I also have family and friends who are fire fighters, EMTs, in law enforcement, and the military. Plus my life is directly affected by the ongoing conflicts thanks to my marriage.

#30

I'm pretty much in a similar boat, Wasabi: I can't make fun of it myself, but I'm not going to just rail against anyone who wants to find humour in it. But I'm also tired of it being jammed down our throats every year when there have been much bigger tragedies around the world since. I wonder if we'll see the same kind of overblown reporting for Japan's tsunami?

Doubtful, since I think I barely saw a few mentions of the one year anniversary, and most of those were just because a local radio show gathered a butt-load of donations for the victims and air-lifted* them to Japan. Though, we do still see some pretty damn constant reminders of the Haitian earthquake, and how we still need to donate even more money, because even though they've already collected 80 bazillion dollars but haven't managed to rebuild a damn thing, donating even more money is obviously the answer.

I don't desire to upset people, but I do desire to explore *all* the conflicting feelings I feel about the event. There is humor to be found in tragedy, and tragedy to be found in humor. It's always been that way and will always be that way.

While I think there is an inappropriate time to discuss the humor of such a great tragedy, I don't believe it's good or healthy to extend that time period to forever. None of my children saw the towers fall, but I watched as they crumbled live on tv and I knew that at that moment people were being crushed to death. No, it's not a fun or funny event, but there are aspects about it that my brain makes funny connections for, and its silly to wall that part of me off.

If I suffer a great tragedy myself, I don't want to be the person that never laughs or talks about the object of tragedy again, and I don't want people walking on eggshells hoping they don't use a trigger word.

I know it's still fresh for many of you, so I had hoped that the thread was appropriately labelled with a warning. It's different for everyone, and I neither desire to chastise nor to be chastised.

Never Forget that Osama Bin Laden Won on 9/11 and got exactly what he wanted to happen. He doesn't give a fuck that he was killed. He made America a shittier place and executed a great plan and effectively terrorized us. No matter how many weddings we blow up with predator drones or how many people we torture in Guantanamo Bay with no trial, the terrorists won. That's more tragic to me than 3,000 lives.

I'm white knighting feminism since equating negative shit with female language is lame. Pussies aren't inherently bad, weak-willed, simpering, or scared.

I still think Bin Laden is a godawful person who was complicit in the murder of thousands(not just on 9/11) to further a putrid agenda. I'm very upset that he won. I'm happy he's gone. But to proclaim victory just because that one guy is dead is asinine.

I never said I was offended. I said he had a good point. Why are so many of our insults centered around implying someone femenine. That in turn implies that femeninity is bad.

So, yeah, it's a good point that a lot of those insults are veiled mysogeny.

I think that's an easy trap to fall into. "Well, I'm not a misogynist, I'm just using language I've heard around me. So it's different."
"I'm not homophobic, I just use the language that's used around me, so it's different."
"I'm not racist, I just use teh language that's used around me."

Etc etc.

Now can we get back to joking about 9/11?

And just for hypocricy, NOW WITH RACISM

It's basically our Hiroshima/Nagasaki, except that only 1/75 the number of people were killed.
While I experienced no personal tragedies with the fall of the twin towers, I do wish the world/media/etc would stop lumping them in with swastikas, blackface, and such, by which I mean that it is suddenly "offensive" to even show a picture of the original World Trade Center buildings. It's History, folks. It happened, get used to it. Talk about it. Discuss it. Use the buildings in movie posters, whatever. It's ok. Ignoring it won't make it go away, all it will do is make acceptance take longer. Once we can easily make flippant jokes with one another about a national tragedy, then we can say we're well on the way to recovery.

squeeze.jpg

The IMDb said:
this idea may have been cute in '87, but I strongly recommend that, if they reissue this on DVD, they change the cover. I mean, come on. It's downright JARRING to see this in a video store, or at least it was to me.

Don't get me wrong, seeing a gloriously mulleted Keaton is always a pleasure... but not when he's squeezed between the CRUMBLING trade centers. Ugh... maybe Bin Laden got his idea from this poster.
Shh...it's ok. The movie was silly enough without making a big deal about the poster. Move on with your life, find something worthwhile to be angry about. May I suggest the Economy? We're having a special this year.

Not exactly. Epigenetics is gene expression. Basically, the genes are still there but they may or may not express depending on the experiences of the parents (mostly the mother) and even the grandparents. It is a pretty cutting edge area of study and it is going to unlock untold secrets about the interaction between biology and behavior. The nature/nurture line has significantly blurred.

A very crude way of thinking about it would be the equivalent of commenting out sections of code in a DNA string depending on factors we don't fully understand yet.

The code is still there, it just doesn't do anything.
