"(We) will take resolute countermeasures against North Korea and make it admit its wrongdoings through strong international cooperation and return to the international community as a responsible member," President Lee Myung-bak told Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in phone talks, according to Lee's office, Yonhap reported.
*sighs and shakes his head* This is why North Korea is able to do this shit to you.

That and the hundreds of missiles aimed at every city in your country.

Unfortunately North Korea has had years and years of unanswered saber rattling that now thy think they can get away with this shit.
... sadly, it needs to stop. The whole situation. I hate to be parent of the world, but damn it, when you have a child who is misbehaving sometimes you need to smack their ass and send them to their room without supper.

The reason is China. We can't really afford to do shit about NK unless we know China won't back them.

war is for chumps. Do to him what we did to Kadafi. Make him understand that we can and will kill just him if we want. It will be a lot harder than it was with Kadafi, but I would suspect we have the capabilities of either setting up a flash invasion on the capital to assassinate him or figure out where he is with other intel and pound it into the ground with missiles.

Actually every part of that is a terrible idea. Still though, an assassination followed by an occupation/invasion seems like the best solution.

*sigh*

Call me cynical, but I think there's a good chance that North Korea actually will get away with this, and at most there will be another few temporary economic sanctions that have proven so effective in the past.

I wonder if the sinking of the Cheonan will be the Franz Ferdinand assassination of our generation.

God I hope not.

Oh I'm very much aware of the China situation.

My response is still the same.
Sadly.. China got U.S. by the balls really. Economically (most goods are still being made there and ship to US) Financially (China owns a good majority of U.S. Debts) Militarily (ONLY if we go to a land war, I don't think U.S. is ready to use Nukes yet)

As long China back North Korea (mainly for strategic reasons), NK thinks they can get away with stuff cause "big daddy" got his back.

Why do we care what happens to South Korea? Let the North invade. The U.S. has been playing world police for too long. We should back our allies, but we should not be the force or the brains behind any of operation. I'm not saying isolationism, but I think we need to take it down a peg.

Alternatively, the US has China by the balls, as we're their biggest trading partner (economically) and the largest, most powerful Navy and Air Force in the world (military), more than capable of blockading China's ports to prevent trade. It's a no win scenario for ether side if we go to war, as both our nations would be devastated both economically.

That being said, China knows it can't protect North Korea for very much longer. They are far too loud and far too gun happy to be allowed to jeopardize China's defense in the region any longer. I suspect we'll see a Chinese invasion of North Korea long before we see a South Korean/America one, unless the North Koreans beat them to it with a revolution.

I think you answered your own question.

And I think the speech from Team America World Police put it best:

Guy in Bar: See, there's three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies think everyone can get along, and dicks just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes, Chuck. And all the assholes want us to shit all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes, Chuck. And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit!

Pretty much what I think will happen too. I'll echo your *sigh*

Now I am glad that I am pretty much out of the draft age range.
well. depend how bad it is, they might call everyone.

while my back pretty much prevent me doing anything front line (cause I have a permanent slipped disc and need to be fused when I get older) I can still do desk/computer work.

Trust me. The ROK is more than capable of defending their own land at this stage of the game. US forces (Army) will get there in time to counterattack and force regime change.

Frankly. Most of the ROK goverment doesn't WANT reunification...the economic bill would be beyond their ability to meet. Look at how Germany struggled after the wall came down...now multiply that times 100 and you have the scope of economic hole the South would find themselves in. That's without mentioning the DPRK ability to reach Japan, ROK, Okinawa and other countries with chemical and nuclear weapons.

You know. It is kinda funny that the salvage evidence points toward North Korea. The weapon type, serial number and such. Sure it could be shot from another sub, but why? to start another war?

not to mention how sad we would all be with out KIA's and Hyundai's
That would break my heart.

So, S. Korea's got our back? I feel so much safer now.
Don't knock South Korea... they release some very state of the art weapons systems and have some of the most modern firearms in the world. They also have very well trained troops at their disposal. The problem is that they are right next door to their greatest foe and he can easily bomb every square inch of their country with missiles and the rumored nukes... and their greatest ally is unable to help them unless their greatest enemy starts an invasion.

Ah, ok, got it. Since the US is the first military power in the world, any treaty you sign with them is invalid. They'll just do whatever they want!! Awesome...

(Also, honoring these pacts is in your best interest. Not doing so would show you not to be trustworthy and, worse, would pose a weak image to your enemies)

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the RoK military. Those guys are SCARY-disciplined, for the most part. I agree that absorbing the North (best-case scenario if China doesn't back up it's yapping cousin to the south) is not in the North's best interest. However, I wonder if, after the initial disturbance, that wouldn't put Korea as a much bigger player on the world stage? Southern technology and manufacturing combined with the north's large agricultural and labor pool. Hrmmm...

Could they do it, though?

Seriously, the DPRK has been shaped by its masters' whims to an utterly fucking horrifying extent. Turning it into an actual country, or even half of one, might be beyond mortal ken.

Well, don't forget that, while it's definitely underdeveloped, North Korea has been surviving as a country for 65 years -- it's pretty much a 3rd world country, yeah, but it's been surviving.

South Korea won't have to turn the North into a surviving metropolis overnight, and it's not like the North will suddenly need the South to double its resources to maintain it-- all that needs to happen is a slow, natural improvement of the area.

This is, of course, assuming that something happens beyond everyone making angry noises towards the North for a while.

China does NOT want a strong, unified Korea. That's why they keep peddling to the North.

Yes! This scares China shitless. A unified Korea would become the next Japan and a MAJOR, MAJOR trade partner with the U.S.

I believe the Trade partner to the U.S. or at least U.S. side.

Now if North Korea wins and takes over then they would be on China's side. But China knows that North Korea don't have the resources to actually win this without China's backing. South Korea is pretty well establish and have the money and technology on their side.

A unified Korea would see a complete dissolve of the pyongyang regime no matter who wins. Kim Jong douche would have a major revolution on his hands. China has no interest in seeing a unified Korea. They just funnel trade to the pyongyang to keep it so.

Yeah, the last thing China wants is someone else on their border who can zerg-rush them should it come down to it. Right now, Russia is the only major power who could do that, and China has more soldiers than them. They don't want another, possibly upsetting the strategic situation.
