Well this is about more personal issues instead of history. To be more specific, it's about money and living within your means. No one wants to hear that they aren't entitled to the latest and greatest of everything. Going further into debt is apparently the way to go and saving money for when you really need it is crazy talk.

I feel your pain. We've been living within our means for years now. We don't have the newest "toys" or the biggest tv, but we're happy and don't have to worry about paying those credit cards each month. People ask how long it takes for us to pay off our Disney trips when we go, and we can honestly tell them, "It's all paid before we ever leave the house." People just don't understand that those credit cards will kill you with interest and fees.

Well... it's all about how you present it. It's not easy, and everyone has trouble with it. Telling someone they're wrong is the surest way to make them sure they're right. Logic never figures into arguments or debates. I highly recommend "How to Win Friends and Influence People". It's a nice classic (in the public domain now, so legal free ebooks abound) that deals with this very topic.

Well logic doesn't figure into the front lines. You have to lead your "opponent" there on their own if you can.

My rant: What is the deal with Craigslist car prices? I don't understand how people think they can ask 4500 dollars for a car with 140K miles on it. Sure, it has a nice body and a decent interior, but that doesn't really matter when all the moving parts are worn out. I'm not paying 4500 (and I've seen it much higher than that) for your junk.

Fuck 'em then. Even my close friends, as they're making dumb choices, I don't get on their case. Each person's life is theirs to fuck up.

As for me, I'm with Sparhawk. Disneyworld? Had to wait until we saved up for it first.

I just found out my health care covers significantly less than expected for my laser eye surgery so I am probably stuck with glasses/contacts for the foreseeable (but blurry, ha!) future. Vexing.

On another forum I lurk on, there is a 22 page thread debating the correct answer to this equation:

48/2(9+3)

After repeated attempts at illumination, one of the guys going against the grain has rebutted one comment thusly: "just cuz their (math) teachers, doesn't mean their right"

Makes for an excellent example of that one xkcd comic, though.

-edit-
Granted, part of the point is that it's a sloppily written equation, but still.

if you follow the order of operations, I would assume it would be:
1. 9+3=12
2. 48/2=24
3. 24x12=288
does that sound right drifter or am I way off?

The correct answer is to approach the problem writer and have him or her write it less ambiguously.

One guy was making the argument that in high level math courses, it is taught that multiplication by juxtaposition has precedence. Any math wonks here to verify, or is this guy talking out of his ass?

The ST of our World of Darkness group just told us that tomorrow's session will be the last one in the campaign... which means I won't be playing in any campaign after tomorrow. I'm still running the Changeling: The Lost campaign for some friends, but I know I'm gonna miss being the player, too.

I wonder if his Mage: The Ascension campaign has any openings...?

Dear Random People At My Friend's Party,

I am not a leper because I am unmarried and don't have children. You don't have to avoid me, as though you're going to catch single-ness. You also don't need to fix me with your advice. And, since I just met you, it's probably not okay to imply my life is a cold and empty existence because I haven't had kids yet. Fucking hell, I'm still in my 20's. My life isn't over, and you're a bunch of assholes for trying to tell me that it is. I haven't "missed the boat."

Who does have authority on the issue, then? Computers? Wolfram Alpha says that 288 is the correct answer.

I am curious, though, has the argument ever turned to putting the numbers into a word problem? Has anyone come up with the situation where that formula applies to some sort of real world problem? It seems to me that would be the quickest way to demonstrate which order of operations is correct.
