Probably because now it's gone mainstream.

I like a lot of pop music. I can't listen to the chorus of "Dark Horse" without singing it at the top of my lungs.

The only thing I ever liked about TS was that she is a hockey fan.

However, she has apparently gotten off the Predators bandwagon and has ensconced herself onto the Kings.

Cue "WE are NEVER EVER EVER Getting Back Together" video.

There was a Predators bandwagon?

That's also disappointing, but oh well

I like it when she appropriated black culture in order to be cool, glad to know racism is still alive and well and pop music.

This will get played a million times and everyone who likes it now will be sick of it soon enough. Most of us hate it because we're not the target demographic.

Lord knows I'm not.

There's apparently a hue and cry about her appropriating black culture. I don't get it, either.

I understand where they're coming from, I just don't agree. The "Social Justice Warriors", for lack of a better term, aren't a monolith

#18

I'm not. It's gross appropriation of black culture to earn her cool points and make money. It's racism in one if it's most innocuous forms and the best part is it's pop friendly! Everyone wins!*

*except black people

**Dont worry, I hear some of Tay-Tays best friends are black! So it's cool!

I really don't think it's on the level of the Miley Cyrus VMAs or the Lily Allen video or the Avril Lavigne video. Taylor didn't other twerking, she presented it as on equal footing with ballet and other "legitimate" forms of dancing. The entire premise behind the video is her failing at those dances clumsily. It's not her singling out twerking as "weird / bad / impossible to do", it's treated the same as all the other dances.

#20

PatrThom

PatrThom

Just watched the video finally.

I don't think it's Grammy-worthy or anything. It just looks to me like a song about, "People have expectations and keep trying to fit me in a mold, I don't fit there, I'm gonna bust loose and do my own thing."

She still reminds me a lot of Alexondra Lee for some reason.

I don't normally like Taylor Swift, in fact most of her music is rather dull to me.

This is catchy. I mean, it's kinda mindless pop music, but it's not bad mindless pop music.

How is shaking your ass an aspect of a culture? That's kind of insulting and racist.

Also, cultural appropriation is stupid bullshit. If you're wearing it as a Halloween costume, I can see that as insulting the culture, but an everyday outfit is an everyday outfit. If a clothing has a specific purpose in a culture and it's just being worn as an accessory, I can see that. But really ...

"Don't wear that outfit, it belongs to another culture."
"Don't dance that way, it's not your culture."
"Don't wear your hair that way, it's someone else's culture."
"Don't speak that language, it's the language of another culture."
"Don't eat that food, that isn't part of your culture."
"Don't date that person, he's from another culture."

Eventually we can get back to being segregated and apart from each other. The SJWs sometimes come off as more racist than the supposed racists they're fighting, when they're really just stupid teenagers.

I mean, look around where you sit. Guess I shouldn't have had Chipotle last night, "THAT WAS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION". Guess I shouldn't use this computer designed in Japan, "THAT WAS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION". I don't even know where the fuck my clothes and such come from. Is my hairstyle from another culture? I can't tell. But if I shave it off, what if that's another culture? Look at all these inventions and ideas around us that were created by different cultures. Together, we've created an amazing world. But no, let's partition off pieces of it as exclusive and keep away from each other and never share art, fashion, music, ideas, history, etc.

And so often I see people from the supposedly appropriated culture have to explain "We don't care" or "We like seeing our culture spread" and the SJWs still not get it.

There are a few tumblrs dedicated to showing those SJWs how stupid they are.

Cultural appropriation is not a white guy having gyudon for lunch. Cultural appropriation is taking a made up word as your school's nickname, and then surrounding it with Native American imagery because it sounds similar to another real Native American tribe.

And yet, with as much scrutiny Washington is under lately, there's no discussion whatsoever about my old HS changing their name. Go figure.

See these?

When you see round, crinkle-cut pickles on your burger, you think to yourself, "Oho! Looks like I'm going to get some crunchy sweetness in every bite," because you have been trained that round, crinkle-cut pickles are sweet and it's the long spears that are dill.
But then, when you take a big, healthy bite and your tongue starts burning and your eyes start to water, you think OH GOD WHY THE HORROR...not because it is spicy, but because you were expecting something completely different.

That's why Miley's performance has caused such a stir. It's probably what she intended, too.

Nicki Minaj's new single? That's pretty fucking bad, considering not even sampling Sir Mix-A-Lot could save it (also considering the sample is about 80% of the song anyway).

I don't care for Taylor Swift. I don't invest the hatred others have for her, but I don't like her. If it's on the radio, I'll turn it off. I'll complain (good naturedly) if other people play her music. But I ... get it? I guess? I get that most of her music appeals to a particular demographic where the experiences might be very similar. Pining after a boy, feeling like the girl not there, etc.

Shake it Off sucks, not just because I don't like it, but because it's entirely about Taylor Swift, not relatable at all. No one but a celebrity has 'haters'. She is spitting back at the people who tell her she dates too much, etc. etc. These are problems Taylor Swift has, and I don't get that. That's not unifying, that's not appealing, that doesn't draw people in. I mean, it does, obviously, but... It fucking shouldn't?

Well, here's the thing with Taylor Swift. I would say she's a very talented songwriter, and while most of her stuff is very poppy and outside of my range of taste (though I did like Shake if Off, aside from the horrible 'cheer' breakdown in the middle, ugh) it is at least well written. But where she's constrained as an artist is that she writes solely in her comfort zone, and really only writes about her experiences. Which is what got her famous to start with, writing songs about being a normal teenage girl with normal teenage problems, which made lots of normal teenagers connect with her. But she's none of those things anymore, and now writes songs about being a celebrity and playing up the swift lovelife stereotype that's been applied to her.

I mean, I guess we agree about her songs, but not about what's good about them? Because the thing you're explaining about Shake It Off is correct, but it's also exactly why I loathe it, versus her other songs, which I just don't care for.

I tried listening to the latest one and it just sounds like every other pop song to me. Lyrics are less important to me than music and I really only get into a song's lyrics if I already like the music. In some cases I've listened to songs for years and have no idea what they're saying. This is the main reason most pop songs just go in one ear and out the other for me; they largely sound the same. I think the only popular stuff I've gotten into in the last few years has been Marina and the Diamonds and Florence and the Machine, which both sound different from other stuff, and surprise surprise, neither is American. Because I can't seem to find a single American musician I like besides Tori Amos. Classic rock--the ones I listen to, those are European. The metal I listen to, all European bands. Even the orchestral stuff is from Japan.

So I have no idea why Blank Space is good and her other songs aren't, because I'm not hearing the difference.

"Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream"

"to the fella over there
with the hella good hair
why don't you come on on over here
and we can shake, shake, shake"

I'm resisting the urge to do a much more detailed breakdown, but I think just juxtaposing those kind of makes my point?

also re: @Chad Sexington - I think more people THINK and HOPE they're more like Taylor Swift than they really are - hence liking her seemingly foreign(to you) lyrics. I mean, I found meaning in it for the general idea of "everyone else is going to do what they do no matter what. So just be yourself".[DOUBLEPOST=1415882995,1415882629][/DOUBLEPOST]

edit: one more thing regarding her lyrics - she's released an album every two years like clockwork - written when she was: 16, 18, 20, 22 (with the song 22 duh), and 24. You can chart the progressions of her maturing (compare "Picture to Burn" to "Better Than Revenge", or "Mean" to "Shake it Off"), and her experiences changing (the first album mentions high school, then never again). She moves from country's somewhat humble/poorer trappings (she's in a pickup truck and slams a screen door in "Our Song") to the nouveau rich ("New money / suit and tie / I can read you like a magazine").

Oh no, I was agreeing completely with you. Those aren't reasons that I like Shake It Off, they're reasons that I find her music weak. My like of Shake It Off is in spite of that.

This part really confuses me. I've heard plenty of complaints from normal people about bosses/co-workers who qualify as 'haters', other times it's family members, and then there's the rampant bullying in schools. There's plenty of hating to go around.

My understanding is a 'hater' is someone who spends their free time shitting on someone they don't know for some perceived character flaw, like Taylor Swift's supposed inability to have a long relationship.

Ah, as far as I know, there's no requirement for the "they don't know the person" part, which would explain the difference in meaning people can take away from it. The joys of slang usage.
