I remember Penn and Teller mentioning this on their show once, but seeing the numbers like this is pretty apalling.

Can you give a bit of a description please? I trust you to a degree, but the link text itself isn't very descriptive, and I don't like clicking on random links that could be to anything. Even just saying "here's a list of BLAH" would be great.

Edit: maybe I'm just paranoid after the number of bad links (that I still don't click on) I get from my Mom's email.

The chart data is for PETA's centre in Norfolk, Virginia. The first box is "Organization Name: People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals"

I have no interest in being "Fair" to that organization, but I must ask, is there aggregate data on what the average is for all facilities in the state? I'm wondering how much they're different.

In summary, PETA kills more animals than the beef industry.

I think the point is just the hypocrisy: actively shaming people who eat meat, wear/use animal products, while themselves killing animals. But, I admit I was wondering the same thing re: aggregate data.[DOUBLEPOST=1363976442][/DOUBLEPOST]Whoa, so if you get the report for all humane societies combined, PETA euthanised nearly 2/3 (about 1600/2500) of animals for the region.

Aggregate data puts PETA in the far far far far far extreme for euthenasia. I think the Virginia average is 44%. PETA has roughly 95% here. SPCA is <10%

PETA's defense is that they do not turn away any pets, that the majority of the pets they take in are at deaths door. Basically they argue that they are not really an adoption clinic, but more a euthanasia clinic. The problem is that there is a lot of evidence that they euthanize perfectly healthy pets. Which is insane.

If you go to the main menu, and ask for an aggregate of all, you can actually get it. Here's the numbers that seemed most important to me:

Received:
Stray: 12683
Seized: 285
Bites: 241
Total of those 3: 13209
Total of all MINUS transfers: 32918 (taking transfers out, as this is all facilities anyways)

Disposition:
Euthanized: 13272
Died in Facility: 482
Total of previous 2: 13754
Total of all minus # still there: 34428

Percentage of total animals "processed" by state facilities that were Euthanized: 40% (39.95%) (somebody get the numbers if you take the PETA ones out of it too, though it won't change too much, but it'll be noticeable)
Total number of animals euthanized or died, minus the number that were strays, seized, or bite cases: 13754 - 13209 = 545

PETA numbers:
Percentage Euthanized: 1675/1877 = 89% (89.24%)
Strays: 52
Surrendered by owners: 1819

I kind of went on the idea of strays, seized, and bites aren't always the same as surrendered by owner, and that any that HAD owners are more likely to get re-adopted. But the point is clear: if you give your pet to PETA, they kill it 90% of the time. But most given to other organizations are re-adopted.

I wonder (it's not on the site) of the percentage "disposition" there compared to the conditions they were brought in from. I made some huge assumptions.

Edit: btw, that's state-wide numbers I used.

The most telling statistic on that sheet is the following:

Pets on hand on January 1st: 2.

In the world of supply chain management an inventory of 2 with a throughput of 5 animals per day implies that they are euthenizing these animals incredibly fast.

Ok, figured out how to get other years from them:

PETA are assholes. Plain and simple. Hypocritical, extremist, psychotic assholes who think that animals are better off dead than living with humans as pets. Blech.

This shouldn't surprise anyone.

PETA believes that an animal is better off dead than slave to humans.

They have a few adoptions and claim that adoptable pets are not euthanized to convince people to turn in their unwanted animals. It's pure public relations BS.

How many members of PETA does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None, because PETA will never change anything.
