Anyone here going to be playing planetside 2? It's going to be free to buy and free to play also the TR outfit I'm in was filmed by Sony for an ad campaign the first video of which is out now

I've been playing it a LOT recently. In a good outfit with my EvE bros. There is nothing more fun in an FPS than a well executed manuever in that game. Very well made

Been playing it and will likely continue to do so. Need to find a good outfit when it goes live though.

Go with BWC on TR because we've been doing things with the devs that we can't talk about yet because it hasn't been published

So this game is freaking amazing. Been enjoying piloting a mosquito quite a lot.

For me, it's been crash-tastic. Every 15 minutes or so, it locks up and I have to end-task it before it locks the whole machine. Pity, it IS very fun when it's working.

I'm still on XP on my main gaming rig... I'll try the /3gb startup switch I suppose, but I've had bad luck with that in the past. Still, it's an indication of bad memory management on the part of PS2.

#9

Necronic

Necronic

A couple of things you could try:

1) Update to windows 7 you caveman!

2) When in game hit Alt + F. This will tell you your frame rate and the bottleneck. Pay attention to it. See if FPS degrades over time and if your bottleneck switches. I thought I had a memory leak problem until I did this and it turned on it was my CPU.

3) "Unpark" your cores. For some reason windows will occasionally dump one of your cores into "Power saver" mode, and this causes problems. I had thought I had done this until someone linked me to this:

http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/...rking-your-cpu-to-get-more-performance.53793/

It's not a PS2 specific issue. In there you will find a link to a program that will Unpark your CPU cores. Like I said, I thought i had turned off power saver until I ran this. Turns out somethig else was reparking them.

#10

GasBandit

GasBandit

Hrm, I'll have to check that parking thing. I do know my 4 cores step down in speed when not under heavy use. I'm pretty sure the bottleneck is not my CPU however. My FPS stays pretty high right until the sudden lockup.

And I know I'll have to upgrade to 7 at some point, but as I said... there's only been like 3 games where it's been an issue, and that's a lot of work to go through for that. And my laptop is windows 7 so most of the time, when something needs 7, I just play it on that.

In all likelihood, it'll take catastrophic hardware failure to get me on to 7 - something that would destroy my XP setup anyway. Next OS reinstall I do is 7. But so long as nothing's wrong with what I've got, I see no reason to go through the hassle when I've got everything else set up how I want it.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if your OS is the problem. If you're using XP 32 that means that you are limited to 3-3.5 GB of memory, including the graphics card (which really means 2-2.5, unless you are using SLI or an X2 card then you're down to 1-1.5). XP 64 increases the memory recognition to 8 GB, but XP 64 generally has some pretty bad stability issues.

As soon as I learned about that I immediately upgraded. The choice between an unstable OS with an 8GB limit and a stable OS with a 2 GB limit (I was using a 4880 X2) isn't really a choice imho. It's more like a Sophie's choice where you want both kids to die.

Edit: Ok wow PS2 is an x86 only game. That's...weird. I think a 64 bit system would still get performance gains though due to OS overhead.

#12

Necronic

Necronic

NM I had it wrong, it is 64 bit compatible and 32 bit systems are the ones that are having problems. Here check through this list and see if any o these things fixes it:

I downloaded this and gave it some play time. I've actually had a lot of fun so far to be honest. The game has run great for me too. I'm suffering more from a "what the hell am I supposed to do" vibe than anything. I'm decent at killing enemy soldiers but I have NO CLUE how to capture anything. So while I'm good at defending... I really don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do otherwise. Lately I've just been deploying at locations that are critically under attack and lay waste to the opposition until we get overrun eventually.

Not to mention it's obvious when you are up against a crew of people playing together with voice communications and strategy. They pretty much just take anything apart that they want to.

I like that there is squad and vicinity voice chat built in, with 2 different push to talk keys.

As for taking objectives, I've found you just kinda... hang out close to them, bf1942 style, and they slowly change to your color.

This is not a game to play solo. The best experience you will ever have is if you are in a good organized platoon. Game really comes into it's own under those conditions.

Yeah, for simpler zones that worked for me... but a good example came when I was defending the center map zone (crown I believe). We were under siege for over two hours before the enemy managed to capture one of the three points (there is an A, B and C location to this zone) and eventually we were reduced to just holding the B one. Eventually though... even though we were still holding B solidly the whole zone converted over to the enemy and we lost our spawn point and were quickly driven out. I have no idea how that happened.

Oh I am sure of this. I realize I'm at a huge disadvantage playing by myself but I've found ways to be useful to the team even without massive coordination. Someday I'd like to play with some organization and support though lol.

It's a tug of war mechanic depending on Influence, the more surronding areas you have the easier it is to capture/harder to defend, if the enemy completly surrounds the areas around the one they are defending they can take the territory you are defending just by holding one point because of the influence they have over the area. usually if they hold two out of the three capture points on an area they can take it from you because of this dynamic

Holy moly... these guys look hardcore. I'm reading all the info on the website and playing the game way more before I even think of joining up something like this (but I would love to at some point).

Thanks for explaining that capturing dynamic... it makes perfect sense now because we were totally cut off and surrounded by the two other factions while that capture was happening.

We have people that have never even played the game in with us, so it's no big deal if you aren't experienced, they have a lot of training for that type of thing. And when you see SOE vids on Planetside 2 like this one and this one That's us

I definitely want to join you guys... I want to be a part of a team like that. I just need to figure out teamspeak and a few logistic things in the game lol. And also probably move my computer when I want to play as my one year old is right above my computer room so it's hard to be talking into the mic late at night and not waking him up.

They have an orientation to get new people to teamdpeak up to speed as well as planetside 2 specific orientation

VS are likely up for some nerfing in the near future. The main issue is the lack of bullet drops on tanks and their ability to strafe. With these two issues alone I have beef with VS, but now they are talking about giving the tanks JJ. On top of that the Schthe is bar none the best ESF due to its absurd manieverability.

I like most of it. Some of it not so much. Guns take too long to earn with certs. It's pretty buggy. Last night proximity voice chat didn't work (thank goodness squad chat still did). It takes forever to boot up... the loading bar goes from 0-98 in a half second and then it sits there for 5 minutes. Last night I couldn't get my sunderer to deploy for love or money. Other similar annoyances.

So, last night I also found out I still run the game smooth on high settings, and it doesn't affect my crashes. I had turned all the graphics down to low to try to maximize play time between crashes, but last night I said "screw it let's try this" and turned most things up to high (still left shadows on low, etc). Got probably my longest play session yet. I notice that when it crashes, it's almost always immediately after a death. I don't crash every time I die.. but every time I crash, it seems to be as the camera changes postmortem.

I'm wondering if it's really a memory limitation issue.

#40

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

I've had no technical problems whatsoever. Well, I did have a clipping issue once where I fell through the ground and kept falling (managed to redeploy before hitting the "ground").

The game has behaved extremely well for me.

#41

Allen who is Quiet

Allen who is Quiet

It's all right. Mostly I go on with my outfite, shoot the shit, shoot shit, and on a whole, don't contribute much. How well we do depends on how organized the other side of the conflict is.

I read a post somewhere where they described increasing their graphics settings and it actually increasing their FPS.

Also I really doubt your memory is the problem. I think it's much more likely that your having problems because you are runnin XP32x

#43

GasBandit

GasBandit

No, that's what I meant. I don't think it's because XP32's memory limit is too low, it's something else, because it always happens immediately on character death. You can't tell me that the act of dying suddenly causes a great demand for memory.

#44

Necronic

Necronic

Sorry, i should have been clear (forgot m previous post.). What I meant was that apparently Planetside does not work well with x86 for some reason. Because I have a pretty old machine and I haven't had these problems you're talking about (although I do have fps issues.)

#45

GasBandit

GasBandit

Ironically, I almost never have FPS issues. My old 8800 GTX is still standing me in good stead.

#47

Well, what I mean is, I don't experience any performance issues. It works beautifully right up until all of a sudden it crashes.

#48

Necronic

Necronic

Huh, surprising. You've updated your graphics driver I assume?

Also as a side note, yesterday my outfit held the Tarwitch Tech Plant for like 18 hours behind enemy lines constantly under siege. Was pretty ridiculous.

#49

David

David

Some classmates pressed me to try this out, it usually isn't my kind of game, but I was having a blast with it. If anyone wants to friend me, I'm a Venu on the Helios server named Zonu.

I will say the currency system is annoying. With how slow I seem to be gaining points, it seems the game is designed to annoy you into buying game cash to get what you want just for convenience.

#50

Necronic

Necronic

Station Cash is pretty helpful for a handful of items, but imho you really don't need more than 2-3 guns. One carbine, one heavy weapon, maybe a battle rifle. Depends on what classes you like. If you like flying or using tanks it gets more expensive. On the 21st they will be doing a 3x sale though, so you could spend like 10$ and get 50$ worth of station cash.

Also, Station Cash will ONLY buy the base gun. To flesh out the gun/tank/etc with all the other good stuff requires you to spend certs, and boy howdy is some of that stuff crazy expensive.

#51

GasBandit

GasBandit

Yeah, certs need to come faster.

#52

Telephius

Although I can't recall if it has been mentioned, and even if it has I will mention it again. You can trial weapons you do not have for 30 minutes. I forget where the option is at the moment but I trialed a shotgun to see how I liked it though I did so at a poor time as there werent any major skirmish engagments happening when I tried the feature hehe.

#53

Azurephoenix

Azurephoenix

I didn't even know you could get different guns and upgrades... guess I have some points built up by now lol.

#54

Telephius

probably lol, Also when you go through the upgrade page check out all the 1 cert point upgrades. Some of them reduce cooldown on getting certain vehicles and some are for health and such on different classes but for 1 cert point it is hard to go wrong investing in those.

Azurephoenix

Just curious who's still active with this and what servers and factions you're playing as. I know there were a bunch of server merges and shuffling and I figured some of us might be on the same ones now.

I'm playing as Terran Republic on the Connery West server now.
