Portal is now FREE! for EVERYONE! even on a MAC!

#1

Soliloquy

Yes, this is in the "Games on Sale" thread, but I think this warrants a new subject so that more people will see it, even if they don't check that thread often.

If you've never played portal, go get it. Right now. Seriously, stop dallying around and just get the damn thing, I don't care who you are.

The free game lasts until May 24th, so really, just go get it now.

Holy cow. I finally get to play Portal! Assuming my machine can run it, that is.

I can't. :( My copy of Steam doesn't seem to work. It keeps saying that Steam needs to be connected to the internet to update, yet I've tried both Wired, and Wireless, and no dice.

I'm guessing Steam is overloaded with people trying to download the game and Steam itself. Check back in a day or two and it'll probably work.

Hey, I bought it as part of the orange box for 50 bucks when it first came out.

No complaining. I'm just excited that I can now make GLADoS Jokes to all my newly-initiated friends.

♪ This was a triumph... ♫

I bought it when it came out and all I got was this lousy T-shirt...

And playing the game several times. Not to mention, modding it into Half-Life 2 is fun.

I'm loving it! Not only the game mechanics (in wich I'm sometimes completely moronic and sometimes feel like a genius) but also because of its dark humor! I haven't finished it yet, though: I just went through the first level you see a malfunctional wall panel and the little hole full of grafitty and random junk.

I'm so glad they allowed me to change the language to english, though. The spanish translation and dubbing are AWFUL.

#25

@Li3n

@Li3n

Damn game said i didn't have pixel shader 1.1... and i have a 8800GTX.

But once i got it to work with a command line, then it worked even without it. Valve hates Nvidia.

To some, Fun is winning
And that is sad... :p

Replaying Portal...ON MY MAC!!!

Game needs a patch as you can't see through the portals, makes the game slightly harder when you can't see what you're leaping into. Still this is truly one exceptionally good games. Nothing bad to say about Portal.

I also bought Torchlight for $9.99 yesterday. Still haven't played it as Portal keeps distracting me.

Steam ID is crcovar if anyone cares.

that is kinda suck cause it is pretty cool (and helpful) that you can see where the heck you are going. Also it is nice to know what is around the corner.

Workaround:
rbarris said:
We saw this bug and thought we had it fixed. One thing that affected this bug's behavior in our sleuthing was whether or not the game started up in windowed mode.

Please try this - right click the "Portal" title in the Steam game list, and select Properties. In that dialog click the "Set Launch Options" button. Then in that text field just put this text:

-windowed

This will cause the game to start up in windowed mode (which you can then change back to FS using Options->Video tab)

This is just an experiment for you to try, to let us know if you see the same behavior that we did. It's a very strange bug. It's not portal depth related, it's a rendering bug.
More workarounds with Valve responses:

That workaround worked great. Thanks.

I can totally see through the portals on my mac.

I got the Portals to be see-through by just turning off Colour Correction.

Timmus

I gotta say so far I'm pretty dissatisfied with steam so far.

I can't install portal, for the last two days I have been getting an error message that the server is too full. I've tried changing my download location and have tried downloading at non peak hours like their faqs have suggested.

I tried making an account on their forums and got it authenticated and I'm not even allowed basic posting privileges. It says I'm in a moderation queue.

I know I'm complaining about a free release but the difficulty I've had even getting some basic information about what's going is making me reluctant to spend money on the service down the line.

All in all this has been a pretty poor demonstration of what steam is capable of.

#33

bhamv3

bhamv3

I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the huge number of people trying to download Steam and Portal and register on the forums at the moment. This is, like, the mother of all peak usage times. Usually it's not like this.

Give it a few days, there's a good chance it'll clear up.

#34

It's for your own good. Controlling orange portals just adds to much complexity, and you really don't want to have to worry about that do you?

Is that the one where you have to "double portal" to get to the platform? I'm stuck on that one and haven't played since cause I get dizzy flying the portal "loop" and trying to open another one

Beat the game a couple times. First to just beat it, second to get the story mission acheivments (camera shy, transmission rcv'd, Etc) and I have beaten all of the advanced maps and limited portal maps. Having issues with the timed maps and the limited steps maps.

#54

Element 117

what was transmission recieved?

#55

bhamv3

bhamv3

A few months ago there was a Portal update where after you beat the game once, radios start appearing in every test chamber. If you brought the radio to a certain location, it would start to play a different sound. Bringing all radios to their correct locations unlocks the Transmission Achieved achievement.

The various sounds the radios produced were found to contain hidden messages, such as images, or the login and password to a certain BBS (which then contained more clues). The Portal community had a field day figuring everything out. It turned out to be a sort of viral marketing for Portal 2.

I liked the second map, that you could do with just 2 portals... after scouting the whole map to see how i should do it i finally realized why the stairs when up and down.
