I know I'm going to be called a heartless bastard for this, but do you ever get the feeling that sometimes there are some really unfortunate people who were just not meant to live?
Hard to say mate. I mean in the past, these people would have been left to fend on their own or died in early age.

Today, we (the world generally) strive to save as many people as possible. why? I am not sure. Maybe because some people with disability can contribute to society.

What really makes darwin facepalm is that one of the women with the water allergy had already had kids. Presumably the kid missed out on the allergy (the other one, the teen in the story with water allergy developed it as a response to penicillin)... but still... if there is a genetic component, it just got passed on.

On a "naughty" note, doesn't sperm have a water component, wouldn't her vagina just reject it?

So does Diet Coke, for that matter. As usual, the science reporting in that article is awful. Below awful. It is raw anecdote supported with side of very mild epidemiology statistics.

My daughter watches this show, H2O, that revolves around a trio of Australian teens who turn into mermaids when they get wet. Every time it's on, I have two questions: how do they pee, and how to they wash their nether regions?

Same applies here.

Hehe. My wife watches that show.

I think "internal water" doesn't effect them, just external water. It would be the same for the people who is allergic to water. Our bodies comprise of what? 90% of water? (I forgot the exact % but too lazy to look it up).

As for mermaids, they can wash while in mermaid form ;) cause while they are bathing, they are in mermaid form anyways.

I was playing Infamous the other night (to finally beat the game) and it was the dawn of day 20 since the main character got his electrical based powers. He sparks when he runs through a puddle and falling into water is near instant death. I just started thinking, how fucking terrible must this douchebag smell?

Probably almost as bad as the guy from Prototype, whose entire body mass consists of virally/bacteriologically digested dead people, all consumed in the midst of screaming, pants-pooing terror, clothes and all.

Well, the smell comes from bacteria "secreting" after "consuming" your sweat or something like that. So the electricity fried them all ;) he is smelling electrifying ;)

I had the exact same thought. But I think he would probably smell like ozone.

I thought about the electricity killing all the organisms on him as well and that got me to thinking what the repercussions would be if micro-organisms could no long survive in or on you.

good question. I think it is the same for people who have allergies to things (like water) I mean there has to be some reason/boundaries or a person's spit will kill yourself. (allergy to water)

One of my ex-wives is allergic to semen. Her throat would close up, and it would cause her to get infections. Crazy how the body works sometimes.

Serious, probably life-ending repercussions. If you could somehow manage to kill of all microorganisms on a human, without directly killing the human as well. First, digestion would be impaired. Humans rely on beneficial bacteria to help digest our food. Second, if malnutrition didn't kill him, he'd probably develop severe auto-immune problems over time. Food allergies for sure, but who knows what else. Then there's issues of pH balance of the skin, various regulatory systems responding weirdly because of the presence/absence of key chemicals... That's just from my layman's perspective, I'm guessing a biologist could come up with dozens more points.
