Quitting Smoking

So,

I'm trying to quit smoking again. My method is to try and quit cold turkey. I think I might also use this space to record when I smoke and when I don't as a way of remembering what I do.

The longest I have been able to go without a smoke is about 1.5 months when I was back in Canada and afterwards. Shortly after getting back to China the cravings kicked back in. I don't know if it's the face there are people smoking on every street corner her, cigs only cost about 1$ a pacl or the fact I'm pretty certain I'll be getting lung cancer here no matter what I do, but I can't seem to quit the habit in China itself.

Currently I smoke about 2-3 cigarettes a day I would prefer to cut it out of my life completely or else limit it to the times I go out drinking with my friends.

Hell, just smoking when I'm trying to stay awake in the factory would be good enough for me.

So here, I start my online smoking journal.

Good luck! Publicly declaring your intentions is actually a good start!

Don't you live in new Fanyang? Don't you smoke automatically?

Try the patches or E-cigarettes. With the later you get your nicotine with out the side of carcinogens.

I watched both of my parents struggle to quit for years while I was growing up. It was very hard for both of them, especially my mother.

I wish you the bestest of best luck in beating the habit, sir! :)

If you want to do this psychologically, keep 1 cigarette in your pocket. Whenever you have a craving, take it out, look at it and say, "Who's stronger: me or you?" Then put it back.

Well went to an all chambers of commerce meeting a month ago. Ran into an ex from Canada who was a japanese exchange student at the time but is now working for a japanese company of some kind in qingdao now. Ended up having a cig and a large drink afterwards but thank god I avoided her room like the plague.

Today is day three of quitting again.

The road to success is paved with failure.

And asphalt.

Mostly asphalt.

Offend away. At least you have the smokes to blame it on. Most of us are just assholes without a cause.

Nah I'm just an asshole that is tired of having to worry about offending people.

First you worry about giving a clock as a gift
Then you worry about offering anything with the number four in it
Then you start to think maybe you SHOULD consult that fengshui master

Fuck easily offended people. There are an infinite number of cultures in this world and ones hello is another's. I slept with your wife.

I'm currently using e-cigs. It's fascinating, these work pretty well. And you can use them anywhere.

Around other people, try to use it like you would a cigarette. It is still not fun getting hit in the face with glycol vapor.

What about the social aspect of em? Harder to strike up conversations with strangers?

Don't remember if I've mentioned this on the board before, but when I was still a convenience store employee, I would tell the people who complained about trying to quit the following: You are not buying a pack of 20 cigarettes. Instead, it's like a game. You are buying a box with 20 chances to quit inside. If you quit and there are still cigarettes left in the box, then you win the game.

Nope. Not when I was a midnight cashier, and not when I had worked my way to manager, either. Most found it made an amusing kind of sense.

I'm just cynical. I wondered if a supervisor would be upset with an employee discouraging sales...

#24

PatrThom

PatrThom

No supervisor ever has issue with an employee making a customer feel good about making that purchase at his store. No successful supervisor, anyway.

Also, there is a much higher margin on sugary drinks, salty snacks, etc. than there is on cigarettes.

I don't think it's outrageous that I ask people not use fag as an insult. Nor do I think that makes me "easily offended".

Truth be told, the insinuation actually pisses me off far more than the actual usage.

So.....
Ok, so look at my name. Let's all just get it out of the way, Necro'ing threads is what I do.
Second, lets some of us who've been around forever, remember that the conversation of quitting smoking has come up several times in the past, and talk about using e-cigs has also come up.
I am trying to do the.... "quit" thing again. Although I use it in " " s because, honest, I was doing the patch, I was then cheating, now I have picked up a new e-cig... in reality, I'm still trying to get the nicotine. Is that honestly really quitting? I still am putting the actual drug into my body, a few less toxins, still the major drug. And fuck knows, currently in the US there's no regulations on what they put in this glycol nicotine substance I am not ingesting, probably rat shit or, worse off, the same shit I put into my body with normal cigarettes.

So, anyhow, let's bring back up this subject. @The_Khan, how did you end up doing? Have you managed? At one time in this thread you said about 2-3 a day. Fuck, that was awesome by itself. AT 2 - 3 a day I would never worry about stopping. it's the one to three packs a day that is just shit.

@Tinwhistler, I remember once before in a thread that touched on this subject (no, lazy, I'm not looking for it right now) you mentioned going to the e-cigs. Have you stayed with those? Have you kicked nicotine all together?

@Halforumites_all_together... please feel free to chime in.

I didn't go to e-cigs to quit...I went to them, because I liked smoking. I still am smoking my e-cig.

Background: I started smoking Marlboros when I was 12 or 13. Kids could buy cigs back then if they said they were buying them for their parents. I smoked pretty steadily until I was 25 or 26 because my then-wife was allergic. I used the Nicorette CQ patch to quit, and it worked, and I didn't cheat. I stayed quit until...2009 or 2010.

Then hookah bars started springing up and becoming popular. I enjoyed the occasional hookah--the tobaccos came in great flavors, and the smoke was much more mellow. I ended up buying one for the house, and ended up smoking it all the time. So, I decided to give e-cigs a try. They had the same features I liked in hookah: Lots of different flavors to try, and a mellow smoke, but without leaving you smelling and tasting like an ashtray. Been smoking the e-cig ever since.

My boyfriend (now husband) was my incentive since we were getting serious, talking about marriage and a family, etc. He didn't like cigarettes, but was ok with me smoking when I wasn't around him. I figured if I was going to have babies in the semi-near future it would be easier to quit now rather than later. I threw my last pack in the trash and dealt with the withdrawal. Chewing gum (regular gum) and keeping my hands busy was a help. Reminding myself of why I was doing it also kept me on track. I went to a party a few months after I quit, had a bit to drink, and decided I needed a smoke. I nearly threw up after two or three drags. I knew I was done with smoking after that. I still get cravings once in a while, but it's nothing I can't ignore.

I used gum. Now I am addicted to the gum, but I'm ok with that.

There are some awesome flavors out there. And things taste better, or not as dull, when you stop smoking. Extra has the best gum in their Dessert Delights line. YAY Lemon Square gum!

I was talking about nicotine gum. You get used to that taste after a while.

Also Wellbutrin/Zyban works wonders. I can't speak for Chantix but I've heard good things with that as well.

I actually did the Wellbutrin thing for depression. My doctor said it might be a great thing and I might quit smoking too. Unfortunately I suffered some of the most serious side effects including suicidal tendencies. So I made the decision to remove myself.

Doctors response: "why did you go off your meds?"

.... because I was going to kill myself if I didn't jackass!!

personally, this was a key moment for me to know that there are times when I definitely need help. but all help needs to be evaluated
I have stayed away from Chantix, even though I have heard wonderful thinks about it. I have been told that for those that it works for that it is simply like a switch. just shut off the smoke desire. and this is all that I desire. The bad thing is all the stories about Chantix taking someone with a history of mental illness, or a family of with that history (which, that I have) and just pushing it into overdrive.

I don't want to die just yet.
