So for the first year I've joined the Reddit gift exchange. I just got my information but I find myself at a loss. I mean, I could get him a programming book on R but that seems lame and lazy.

What kinds of things would YOU get this guy?

Lately I've been interested in learning more programming, specifically in R and Python. My hobbies include wine tasting, fine dining, Italian cuisine, and reading. My subject matter interests include US politics, political history, US history (all periods), Vietnam (the war but also the history of the country itself), and anything related to WW2. I also run and lift weights. I've traveled extensively in Italy; specifically in Tuscany and the Piedmont regions (with Airbnb, all things are possible ). My wife and I are traveling to Paris for a few days early next year.

I'd so a few books.

1) Programming workbook of you can find the right kind
2) history book about ww2 or Vietnam or something. His wife and him are taking a trip to Paris so combine those? historic places in France?
3) a book you like that isn't super famous already.

I considered it, but didn't want to divide my resources.

Hey @Dave, just off the cuff I'd suggest a set of the Worldwar series, or at least the first few books. I know I've mentioned the series before, but it seems being a George R. R. Martin fan and also a fan of history, it should be right up his alley.

Not Paris, but touching on the area where I used to live. I know my parents loved this book, along with his other works.

Dammit, Amazon.

The book is called "A Year in Provence," by Peter Mayle, and is worth picking up.

Great ideas, all! I liked the idea of the Harry Turtledove books, but decided on Vietnam as part of the focus, so I got him the following:



I like the Hunt book because it shows the war from multiple perspectives, including the Vietnamese. Then I added the France guide as a fun thing for them to look at before their trip.

What do you think? Or does it matter? I try and put some thought into these things.

We had one of those in my high school.

My aunt's last name is "Dick". They named my cousin "Justin Aaron", so when I got a facebook friend request a few years ago from "Just. A. Dick", it took me a second to realize that it a legitimate request and not a prank.

Poor guy. At least he owned it though
