Say Hello to the Best Bet the Republicans could have

Rick Perry keeps inching closer and closer to running, and he's by far the best chance the republicans have to take the presidency.

http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.c...starting-to-feel-called-to-run-for-president/

As a Texan I can say that he would be a pretty bad pick in terms of economic policy (google "Trans-Texas-Corridor", then look at a map of Texas, and ask questions about why we don't have commuter rail between the 3.5 big metroplexes), but it's far less obvious than Huckabee's ridiculous stance on the Obama Healthcare package that is modelled on his own.

Head to Head I think the only concern Perry would have against Huckabee is the connections between Bush and Perry. I'm pretty sure he would trounce Huck in the Religious Right and in the Tea Party side of the Rep party.

Bachman and the rest of the scrubs wouldn't stand a chance against him of course.

If he runs he will pick up the the nomination, and he would have a very good chance of beating Obama. Which is scary because he would be like if Reagan and Bush had a son who they home-schooled. Although he did support HPV vaccines which is p cool

You mean Romney not Huckabee?

As for Perry I don't know all that much about him besides the fact that he is a republican governor from Texas which is more than enough reason in my book to write him off as a terrible president.

Yeah, I know next to nothing about Perry but he can't be any worse than some of the nuts running.

Oh yes he can. Romney (whoops) would be a MUCH better option, but he's done enough political flip-flopping that I don't think he has much of a chance against Perry if it comes down to it.

Perry is in some ways not a bad governer. He has done a good job of getting out of the way of local industry and letting it flourish, and also makes reasonable choices that might anger the religious right (semi-mandatory HPV Vaccinations for minors).

But he is not presidential material, flat out, and his economic policy would be flat out dangerous during the current economy. He has cut education spending in Texas like the grim reaper, which I have always considered one of the dumbest things anyone can cut. Texas schools are still affordable, but, thanks to the funding cuts, a number of schools are having to cut funding for PhD candidates which is exactly WHY education funding cuts are a terrible idea.

Then there is the Trans Texas Corridor, arguably one of the dumbest pieces of government spending in Texas next to the aborted super-collider.

The way I see him is that when it comes to the easy/passive types of fiscal conservatism (cut taxes keep regulation limited) he's fine, but frankly it doesn't take any skill to do that. As for the active stuff.....his spending/cutting spending choices are flat out terrible.

Perry is a crony capitalist. He likes spending public funds on shit nobody needs. And that's a Texan telling you that.

Yeah I mean he is the worst kind of conservative, the one that spends and cuts without thought.

Sadly though I really think he will get the nomination if he goes for it. He is the perfect type of republican for the current climate.

The one thing he has going for him is he has absolutely no shame or fear. He probably wouldn't be intimidated by how the washington press corps or the cable networks will treat/portray him. That kind of confidence resonates, especially with how tired a lot of their constituents are with the current crop of jello-spined republicans.

Yep, he has a massive amount of confidence and a lot of charisma. That's part of the reason I am picking him. I remember listening to him in the republican primary debates for goveerner and he is no chump, he was able to stand his own without batting an eyelid with every other candidate present attacking him. He's impressive for that.

But he still will make a terrible president.

An enthralling candidate makes a horrible president. Seems I've attended this dance before.

Interesting. Sounds like a real bad choice but I mean, if you had to choose between him and Bachmann... I mean, c'mon.

Clinton was extraordinarily charismatic and I still think he's one of the best presidents we've had in decades. Reagan sucked ass but don't let a Republican hear you say that.

Jesus Chist, with his ill-fitting suit that looked more like a cut scene from a Command and Conquer game than an actual message from an elected official.

I wish C&C cutscenes still had the same level of serious ridiculousness they did back in the C&C1/RA1 days...
