I look at my 8 gig USB drive in amazement sometimes. That's more memory than my first 2 PCs, for 12 bucks.
However, the Joint Genome Institute has DNA sequencers that spit out a TB in one run. That's a hell of a lot of data.

Months ago I got a lower price on seagate external 1TBs... so low I bought two. I think it was like 110 bucks each. I'd wait for the price to come down a little more, fellas.
And I'll never trust data to a Western Digital again.
I disagree, I have 2 300 GB hard drives full with just games. Seeing as the average game takes up anywhere from 5-10GB of space, and the fact that I buy a large amount of my games via steam nowadays.

I'm talking about the 2TB drive.

I know a guy with 2TB of porn.
Granted, he downloaded them from torrents, and he probably didn't pay for them, so I guess it counts as illegal torrenting, but still...

Exactly.
Porn, games, movies. Etc.

If I ever get around to installing my TV tuner, and hook it up to cable, I could fill a 2TB drive in no time. Just with recorded TV shows.

The question is, why would you? After you watch a TV episode of something it's 9/10 times not worth keeping.
This wasn't meant as a discussion of "Could you fill it with legal content." It was an observation that the largest majority of users that would fill that kind of space would be of the illegal sort.
An FAQ on Hauppauge's site says that HD video takes up about 5GB per hour when encoded in MPEG2. A 2TB drive is about 1,800MB of usable space. 360 hours of HD television is pretty ridiculous, now that I think about it. Even looking at all the TV I missed in the last couple hectic weeks of my life, I don't think I'd need much more than 40 hours of storage space to handle the backlog.
Damn, 2TB is a lot of storage. I'm running out of space on my 500MB drive, though, and I'm itching for more room. I've already had to uninstall some games to make room.

That doesn't seem like such a huge deal. I got my 500GB for $120. Could've gotten a 1 TB for $160 at Best Buy.
Then again, it was the unreliable brand, according to everyone who reviewed it. Is Seagate built to work?
What size drives do the models you're talking about use? The Seagate in the deal uses a 2.5" laptop drive. A model using a 3.5" drive would be larger and far less portable. Not all external hard drives are meant to be moved around.

Although, there was a 750GB 2.5" for $140 and a 1 TB 2.5" for $180.
