Season openers tonight

So, the NCAA football season starts tonight (televised, at least). Who's ready? Whose favorite team is going to take the BCS trophy this year, whose team is going to go winless (mine is! mine is! stupid Cougars), and perhaps most importantly of all - are any incredible morons going to get suspended for the majority of the season due to an after-the-game altercation?

Personally, I'm just hoping that my conference (PAC-10) has a better showing this year than last, and that there are some nice cold fall days where it would be seasonally appropriate for me to curl up on my new comfy reclining couch, with a big cup of hot cocoa, and watch the games. Bonus points if it's a cold, rainy fall day.

SEC is the best conference. Tennessee is going to be horrible (oh god so bad), but the SEC Champ will beat (insert any of 5-6 teams here) in the BCS Title game just like the last 4 years :smug:

It would be hilarious if it was Boise State.

Big 10 will take it all this year. Hopefully Iowa. Basically anyone can win as long as it's not Nebraska.

But tonight I'll still be watching NFL preseason. Giants & NE.

I would love to see Boise State kick ass this year, just because I live relatively close to Boise and genuinely like the team. That, and I partially disagree with some of the stats used by the BCS to determine eligibility for BCS games, like strength of season. I can understand why you wouldn't want to put someone whose toughest opponent is a "big name" school that hasn't seen a bowl bid in 35 years up against Texas/Florida/Ohio State; but at the same time, schedules are set so many years in advance, if you're a small school in a crappy conference your only hope is that you can kick ass for several years straight so that you can get into a good conference and improve your schedule strength. Besides, that first recent Fiesta Bowl that BSU was in kicked some serious ass. My mother still hasn't lived down the fact that she turned the game off and went to bed when BSU gave up that score with minutes left in the 4th.

I'd love to see some good rivalry games this year. I know that the Cougs have no chance against the Huskies this year, but honestly, I've lived in Seattle for so long now that I'll happily cheer for the Huskies in every game except the Apple Cup (their rivalry game), and even that one if we have a chance to get rid of a worthless coach and losing the Cup has a chance to help sway the outcome. But I really just can't wait to see some good solid hits put on people. I love watching the ball carrier run down field, then fly back several yards after a devastating hit - as long as both players walk off the field after the play. It may be violent of me, but I try to live by the words of my junior high football coach. "There are times when you're hurt, and there are times when you're injured. If you're hurt, your ass better be on the field, that's what they make Tylenol for. If you're injured, your ass better have a doctor's note."

Go Cyclones!

Sorry Dave, I just can't go along with you on this one. Too many of my family members graduated from ISU. Hell, I almost went to school there.

Eh screw the SEC, PAC-10 and Big 12. I want the big ten to win but they won't Michigan won't be competitive for at least 2 years after fail-rod gets fired, and Michigan State might not be fore many years. Plus Ohio State can't help but shit their pants whenever a title is on the line.

You know, if only the teams played each other we could talk shit about who is better. Oh wait....

2000 - Iowa beats Penn State 26-23
2001 - Iowa beats Penn State 24-18
2002 - Iowa beats Penn State 42-35
2003 - Iowa beats Penn State 26-14
2004 - Iowa beats Penn State 6-4
2005 - DNP
2006 - DNP
2007 - Penn State beats Iowa 27-7
2008 - Iowa beats Penn State 26-24
2009 - Iowa beats Penn State 21-10

Since 2000 your powerhouse Penn State is 1-7 against my Hawkeyes. Fact.

If you mean the second-best conference in the nation, the Big 10, then no. :D Actually nobody knows where the hell Missouri is going. They sure were expecting to get the Big 10 invite, which makes their pre-emptive burning of Big 12 bridges so deliciously hilarious. Now they're the chump trying to hang out with his former friends after ripping them a new one when he thought he was moving to a new school. Oops.

One thing I noticed this weekend was there were an unusual number of horrible QB-center snaps, a lot even leading directly to safeties. Obviously it's the first game of the season and if those were going to happen, it'd have been this weekend, but it seemed every game I watched had at least one out-the-back-of-the-endzone safety and at least two bad center snaps.

Liked, didn't love the Michigan game. I've seen a lot of blogs and message board posts exclaiming both surprise at Michigan's performance and certainty that Michigan is back. Really, I don't know why people are surprised at Michigan's performance. It wasn't the offense that sunk us last year, it was the defense. The horribly putrid, useless defense. And yesterday the offense did what I expected. Keep in mind that outside the Ohio State debacle, they had been scoring in bunches last year with a far less dynamic QB at the helm. With Denard and the O-Line getting more reps under their belt, things were only going to get better. The surprise (but still a question) was the defense. It's here where I question people thinking Michigan is back. It didn't matter what formation they were in last year, they were always caught off-guard and in bad positions and made poor tackles. Switching to a 3-3-5 raised a bunch of eyebrows during the offseason, since this is...y'know....the Big 10, and yesterday was going to be the big test of its effectiveness against the run. Because say what you will about UConn, they have a sick running attack. It's really all they do. And the defense, a 3-3-5, actually held its own. That was incredibly surprising. There were slips, sure, but it held up. The question now is, can they stop being the world's largest sieve against a passing attack? We'll see.

Boise friggin' State. I honestly want to know what more BCS-backers want these guys to do before they get their shot at the championship. First, it was "you need to go undefeated". Then it was "you don't play anybody of worth". What excuse is going to be next? That they didn't play VaTech in Blacksburg, even though that "neutral" field basically was Lane Stadium? When Boise goes undefeated again and a 1-loss Big 12/SEC gets in ahead of them, I can't wait to hear what the BCS-backers come up with this time.

Because this game was damn good, especially for a first game of the season for both teams. There were the usual undisciplined plays as befits a first game, and yet again the center-QB snap reared its ugly head, but there was also a lot of great play. Boise dominated until the weather and VaTech's talent balanced the scales again. And VaTech wasn't the patsy of the past few years in this first marquee game; after the 1st quarter drubbing, they showed up big time. It's a shame they had to lose this game because while it goes into the books as another first game loss that knocks them out of title contention, they have the talent and the heart to be a championship team.

Even if they don't have the uniforms for it. Good god those things were hideous. I get the whole "logo in the numbers" thing, but it looked like someone puked bright orange onto otherwise decent all-black uni's. And while Boise's were better, the random dark grey spots everywhere were odd. It made them look like they had all sweat-stained their uniforms even before kickoff. And just having the blue spot on one shoulder was distracting, almost to the point of inducing a headache. But with just those things modified, those Boise uniforms were great. VaTech, not so much.

Better to lose at the beginning of the season than the end, which makes no sense. College football needs a playoff structure and needs it yesterday. But that won't happen because of greed.

That will still have controversy, how many teams you talking bout, 4? 8? I doubt it could be any more else that is too many games.

Lots of grumbling over the twitterverse over WVU's slow-starting offense last week. They're gonna have to do a lot better, and quickly.

I dunno, DA, I hear Coastal Carolina's a real contender in I-AA (I refuse to acknowledge the FCS/FBS nonsense)... amongst universities along the Carolina coast, anyway. This was just a classic Coach Stew opening game. At least we can be fairly certain that he won't come back for a contract renewal once his current term is up.

Got to feel bad for the Hokies today, losing to I-AA James Madison 21-16. They just became the second ranked team ever to lose to a I-AA team.

Got to feel even worse for Boise State. Their strength of schedule just got shot in the nads.

Looks like one player is emerging as a Heisman hopeful, Denard Robinson of U of Michigan. He has been putting up some crazy total yard numbers, and made a nice last minute comeback march down the field. Now hopefully he won't get hurt.
