Police have cordoned off the area, reports of multiple deaths (one confirmed - so far), multiple injuries and police believe they are dealing with more than one attacker.

Media also reports shots fired elsewhere in Munich, though unconfirmed.
At least 3 shooters in original shopping center attack.

Good news is Die Welt (German newspaper) are claiming that reports of a second shooting elsewhere were a false alarm.

Bad news is that the police are warning people that they do not know where the shooters are.

I miss Munich. I loved it there. I don't know if I was ever at this mall (or if it was even around in 1990) but I did swim at the Olympiapark.

It's not over yet. The police is still searching for the attackers.[DOUBLEPOST=1469212053,1469211756][/DOUBLEPOST]An eyewitness just said that that one attacker yelled something against foreigners.

Uncofirmed reports keep coming in about possible shots fired at the airport and the gardens. Public transportation is shut down.

Periscope is turning into a very useful tool for getting info to news sources; it's like CNN's iReporter stuff, but well made.

Marienplatz is completely empty. This is like a movie where all the humans have died. Think Times Square and you'll be close.

Police gives a statement right now, 5 deaths confirmed and many injured. Still searching for three attackers

Who were shouting "Fucking foreigners!" during the attack. So far right nationalists, maybe?

Maybe, the police hasn't confirmed anything about that.
Now I hear a crazy story about a man in a Santa costume on tv.

The police confirmed 9 death right now. One of them may be one of the attackers.

The CNN update feed here: http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/22/europe/germany-munich-shooting/

"A witness who will only be identified as Lauretta told CNN her son was in a bathroom with a shooter at the McDonald's. "That's where he loaded his weapon," she said. "I hear like an alarm and boom, boom, boom... And he's still killing the children. The children were sitting to eat. They can't run." Lauretta said she heard the gunman say, "Allahu Akbar," or God is great. "I know this because I'm Muslim. I hear this and I only cry." "

Welp, so much for right wing nationalists.

So, until the security footage is all accumulated and digested, we're still going on the remarks of individual witnesses.

Good morning. Nobody knows what exactly happened and everything is speculation. The police is investigating right now in all directions. It seems that the culprit is a 18 year old german-iranian man, a political and religious motivated terrorist attack may possible.

#18

chris

chris

The police press conference started and it looks like it was an amok shooting without any terrorist motivations. His room was searched and no IS material was found but a whole lot of informations and books about police work and amok shootings like school shootings. It seems he was also in therapy for depression.[DOUBLEPOST=1469268523,1469268378][/DOUBLEPOST]It looks like he also hacked an facebook account and invited people to eat at Mcdonalds. The police still investigate that information

Just Me

Just Me

Things have cooled down and speculations are over, at the end of the weekend this is what we know now:
(quick and dirty rehash, it's late)

No terrorist background!
Shooter was receiving psychiatric treatment (depression, social anxieties).
Shooter had a 'thing' for amok shootings and studied previous shootings. Friday also was the fifth anniversary of the Breivik killings.
The shooting seemed to have been meticulously planned for at least a year now according to files from the shooter's computer.
A few weeks ago the shooter visited Winnenden and took pictures of the locations from the 2009 Winnenden school shooting
The weapon was bought illegaly from the Dark Web (as a person working in the firearms administration I'm happy about this, for my own sake and the Munich colleagues'!)

Now an explosion in Ansbach in a restaurant near a music festival. Looks like Europe is on it's way to becoming a hotspot for routine terror attacks, just like the middle east. Anti-immigrant sentiment is really starting to rise now.

What I heard on the news was that the suicide bomber was a Syrian refugee who had been denied permanent status.

I have to wonder if becoming a "terrorist" is a new and stupid trend among low life losers, and that ISIS just looks at the headlines and says, "Yeah, we'll claim that we masterminded this!" then twirl their collective mustaches because they're too lazy/stupid to actually carry out a plot.

I haven't seen any proof he idolized Hitler. Or did you mean "modern" history? Or "recent" history? For the moment, they're mostly reporting he played Vidya Gamez like Call of Duty, was bullied in school, had repeatedly made threats against class mates, and so on. The interest in Breivik is more incidental than driving.

Of course they are. Any suicidal/depressed/feeling repressed/unhappy/whatever youth is being pushed/driven/suggested o go out with a bang, make a name for themselves, get back at society, etc etc.

The attack was on the 5 year anniversary.

Also hitler* was a leftist DUH, socialism is right there in "nazi".

*I think comparing dictators that ordered genocide over several months/years and spree killers are apples and oranges

Yes because governments never put something different in the language of what their party/nation is, compared to their policies.

Example: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (aka: North Korea) is a paragon of Democracy, a perfect Republic, and definitely for the People... or not. About the only thing correct in the title is the word Korea!

For a full-ish listing, see: People's Republic of Tyranny on TVTropes.

But seriously Charlie? Were you seriously arguing that? I know most of us have a pretty low opinion of you here, but this disappointed me. Saying "Hitler was a leftist" is out of character even for you for how easy to debunk. You feeling OK?

I'm going to back up Charlie on this. I thought it was obvious sarcasm.

Then again, if you didn't make a point of saying ridiculous, inflammatory bullshit all the time people wouldn't have such a problem detecting sarcasm...

It's more your second sentence there, but fair, re-reading it in that light makes it more obvious.
