So... tell me about tablets

I'm in the market for an android tablet, not interested in apple, and would only consider a windows tablet if running a full version of windows and not the cut down tablet version, and was comparable in price.

I'll be using it for work, mainly in organizing notes and calendars, but also want something I can toy around with in my personal time, which mainly means running things like hearthstone.

I've been looking at the Nexus 10, but wonder if there's really much difference between it and the Nexus 9, which is considerably better priced.

Anyone have any recommendations, or devices that you use that you've enjoyed?

Wait, the Nexus 9 is newer than the 10? What...

According to the review sites, right now it looks like you can spend a lot of money and get a Surface Pro 3 for Windows, break down and get an iPad Air 2 for iOS, or if you want Android you should look at the NVIDIA Shield 32GB.

Do they manufacture the nvidia shield anymore? Because damn if no one seems to sell them. Even nvidia's own store lists them as out of stock.

Next "in-stock" date is listed as July 17.

I have had several tablets of various quality and manufacturer. (Most were used or refurbished or a gift. I'm not made of money!) I still stand by my iPad, not because I am an Apple fanboy, but because the app store is much better. Or at least it was the last time I tried to find good apps for Android.

It still is. Most Anroid apps are still just phone apps that scale nicely on a larger screen.

Google names their Nexus tablets based on screen size, not generation.

I bricked my nexus 7 just by doing an android update. Every update made that thing slower and slower, and now I'm really gun shy about the nexus line.

I only have an iPad. It's come in handy. It's my go-to device after my phone. But, I don't do much on it besides the web and games.

I use mine for a variety of things, including but not limited to:
  • Pre-show music.
  • Contracts for shows (using an app called SignEasy, which allows for electronic download & signing of PDF documents which can be emailed and stored - all directly from my iPad and Dropbox.)
  • Bumper ("thinking") music for Trivia and Game Shows. (Think the Jeopardy theme.)
  • Reading. I don't have a lot of space for books any longer, so I read on my iPad.
  • Fantasy Football. Having a mobile app lets me keep up on stuff that I'd miss if I had to wait until after work.
  • Camera. I use this as my picture-taking device almost exclusively.
And that's just the beginning. I actually don't play a lot of games on it.

Mine did the same, and from my research, it's useless without cracking it open and replacing parts, might as well buy a new device. Fortunately my 5.5" phone isn't too far off from 7" that I can deal with it for now, so I'm waiting for great reviews and a great price on a 8-10" tablet.

That was the real kicker for me, too. I used the nexus 7 mostly when my phone was a tiny, slow Droid 1. Now that I have an LG G3... I don't actually really need a tablet.

Is it just me or did anyone else read the thread title as Evil from Time Bandits?

I decided to go with the Nexus 9, because I prefer a 4:3 aspect ratio over 16:9 when it comes to tablets, and because I found an amazingly good deal on closeout.

Oh sure, I know all about tablets. I remember this one time a guy went up a mountain, and he came back with two tablets that all these damned rules written on them. I mean, I think they were rules. I was busy hitting on a girl over by this big golden idle, so to be honest I wasn't really listening.

Huh... I bought the 32GB wi-fi only version, and they sent me the 32GB Wi-fi+LTE model.

If you bought the Shield, that's because the 32GB version is the WiFi+LTE model. The WiFi-only version is the 16GB model.

Weird on your experiences with Nexus. I had a 4 and am currently using a 5, and my wife's nexus 7 has been working great for her. The ability to actually connect it to your machine unlocked is one of the features IMO. Easy rooting.

Basically, I could see getting a non-nexus device, but never one that I couldn't root easily.
