For those that don't recognise the name he was the Russian officer in charge of the nuclear early warning system when it "detected" an American launch on Russia. If it wasn't for him refusing to pass that information on because he realised it was a system malfunction there would have almost certainly have been a nuclear war between the US & the USSR back in 1983.
Every single person alive today quite possibly owes their lives to this man. Hell of an epitaph.
