In a letter to the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple community, Steve Jobs announced today that he will be stepping down from his role as CEO. In his letter, Jobs said he can “no longer meet [his] duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO,” and recommended that Apple appoint COO Tim Cook as his replacement. The board announced that it would, in fact, appoint Cook as CEO, and Jobs would become the Chairman of the Board. Cook will also join the board effective immediately. [yahoo]
I guess his health issues finally got to the point where he had to take it down a notch.

Wow. Ok, so he's going to be chairman of the board, and still be employed by Apple.
Making it late news on a wednesday is curious... expect apple stock to drop when the bell rings tomorrow morning, as well as lots of trading as people buy it on a low in anticipation of the iPhone 5 release.
I wonder if the last few days of iphone leaks were purposeful to preced this announcement? Added at: 19:18

They stopped trading briefly, then restarted again due to the news. Apple is now down 6%. Twitter is exploding. This is all the tech world will be talking about tomorrow.

I feel a great disturbance in among douchebags , as if millions of Apple Fanboys cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."

Ah come on, Apple is a household name. Jobs or not, Apple isn't going to crumble. I'd also hope that Jobs was smart enough to plan for his resignation. I don't think he'd leave his own company hurting.
Yeah, no big deal. He's been super sick and unable to really run the company for awhile, Cook has, I believe, already been handling the day-to-day operations so this is kind of a big meh overall. Hopefully he gets better.

Correct. Cook was CEO interim, this just makes it official. Steve is still Chair and I'm sure like anything, his words are still "law"

At least he can now...
a) ...become a Howard Hughes-like recluse who will be discovered mummified in his palatial estate in 2046.
b) ...build up his health and start up a hedonistic lifestyle that will make Hugh Hefner look like a Dominican monk.
c) ... finally move to his underwater fortress and begin colonizing the ocean floor.
d) ...really focus on his efforts of world domination.
Is it morbid to say that Steve Jobs is my #1 seed on my death pool?

Depending on how much of a percentage of that pool you're willing to part with, I'm sure I could find someway for that to swing in your favor.....

It's a change, to be sure.
Now at least he won't have the day-to-day weight of the CEO title any longer. That should allow him to have more of a creative influence, something I'm sure he prefers anyway.
