Good gods, I should've listened to Charlie.
No, not about Spider-man, what everyone's been saying about that is what I expected. I mean, I should've watched Godzilla movies last night. Instead I changed my mind back and watched
Dragonslayer.
Let's start with that this movie was stupid, and while some of that is a charming 80s fantasy kind of stupid, other is just storytelling dead ends or "well, that rendered the middle 40 minutes of this movie pointless". And that ending. It's like they had no idea how to end it, so they just threw in a bunch of weird crap and a shit-eating grin. The ending reminded me of a 60s live-action Disney film in how trite it felt.
The dragon effects are good when the camera is zoomed in on the puppetry. It's a great design. Even the stop-motion is fantastic, probably some of the best I've ever seen. The dragon creeps fluidly through the tunnels and I wasn't entirely sure how they'd pulled it off at first, since the closest you had to CGI in this movie was shining lights. Unfortunately, the cleaned-up film which probably was a bit muddier on VHS makes the blue screen effects really jarring and obvious, so any time it has to interact with the characters and isn't life-sized, it's jarring. The flying scenes from Superman the Movie are more convincing. Which is a shame, because again, when they're not overreaching, the dragon looks fantastic.
The effects stuff wouldn't have bothered me if the story had been done better, and I'd have given the story a pass if I thought the effects had made the movie at least worth a watch. Neither was the case.
