ThatNickGuy's Series Consideration

Looks like the original thread got wiped out when Dave snapped his fingers. :p

But I FINALLY finished editing my next installment of SERIES CONSIDERATION. Life suddenly got in the way, with counseling, finishing my yoga teacher training, and finally getting a job. But it's done! I might put it up on YouTube tonight.

However, I'm kind of stumped on what to do for the next video. I wanted to cover Robert Kirkman's IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN, in conjunction with ANT-MAN AND THE WASP releasing soon, but I couldn't finish it in time to take advantage of that sweet, sweet YouTube algorithm.

Anyone have suggestions on what comics I could cover next? Keep in mind that the series focuses on COMPLETED creative team runs or graphic novels.

EDIT: Ooh, never mind. I see the new Death of Superman animated movie releases next month. Boom! THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN IT IS.

And here we go! I'm stepping through the doorway of LOCKE & KEY.

I changed how the voting works this time, as an experiment. Instead of leaving it for the comments, I'm doing a Twitter poll. Then I don't have to worry about screwing up tallying the votes. :p If it doesn't work, I'll go back to the comment section thing like last time.

I need to start reading Locke & Key again. I got to volume...5?... then got busy and haven't picked it back up yet. It's a great series. The art is fantastic. (I loved the Watterson-style bit.)

I'm looking forward to your take on Death of Superman. :)

That was really interesting, and you did a good balance of telling the story without giving too much away so that if I get a chance to read it someday I'll want to.

Looking forward to Death of Superman. Are you going to do the Funeral, Reign, and Return stuff to coincide with the second movie next year?

Thanks, that was the intention. There's a MAJOR change for one character (or two, technically) about two thirds of the way into the series. I specifically chose not to use any shots of that character's change because it'd ruin the surprise. But that's the exact kind of balance I want with these, especially for lesser known books like this compared to something like Death of Superman.

As for Funeral/Reign/Return, that's the plan. I don't think the BluRay has an official release date outside of "early 2019."

Invincible might be a good one. The series wrapped up a few months ago, and Amazon will be doing an animated series, apparently.

Heh, you know, I've never read it. Not for a lack of interest because I hear it's fun. Just never got around to it.

Well, you're in luck, I think the whole thing is going online!

Is all of Invincible going to fit in one video?

Is all of Invincible going to fit in one video?
Probably. There are things worth discussion, but it's not what I'd call a "dense" book. The themes are consistent throughout the book (parental figures, growing up, taking responsibility). As always, I can tackle those things without going into too much spoiler territory.

I don't know if I've said, but my goal with these videos is to try to keep things as vague as possible for new readers. Locke & Key, for example, has a major plot twist about halfway through, which permanently changes two characters. So I deliberately chose not to use any panels that would give away that twist.

I probably won't do that for well-known books like The Death of Superman. Uh, yeah, spoiler: He dies.

That is the definition of a not dense book. I think most comic people know that story, but like I said after your first video, I'm always up for hearing people's thoughts and feelings about that one. And I'll be even more looking forward to the sequel video, since the Funeral and Reign parts are what I think make Superman's death unique vs other superhero deaths.

Once the series became misery porn and the main character was

raped

I really fell off of Invincible. Did it improve before the end?

Naturally, I welcome any feedback. Not sure if implementating the video clips worked as well as I'd hoped.

I'll check it out soon as I'm home from work. Can't really pay proper attention here, today.

I think it was well done. There was one part where text was over the image and I was like, "I can't read that." but then the image faded away and it was perfectly fine.

You have a good voice for this kind of thing.

Death of Superman was what first got me in to comics too, so I could really relate to everything you said. I didn’t get as into comics as you did though. I think the fact that his death meant nothing really put me off to all of it.

Good thoughtful stuff. A couple technical issues here and there, but nothing too serious to get one's nose out of joint about.

#24

Hailey Knight

That gave a lot of insight to the behind the scenes. It doesn't seem anyone was thinking about the ramifications of what they were doing back then, just that 90s kewl-ness.

My only big issue was the same as Dave's, with the comic cover that didn't fade fast enough to read the words behind it.

There was also a small issue @9:32 or so where you say people buying multiple copies would "conflate" sales figures (instead of "inflate"). You hesitate, so I wonder if you knew it in the moment, but then never went back to fix it.

Heh. I like how the picture of Jerry Ordway where you quote him saying, "Let's kill him!" has him wearing a Dexter lanyard.
You have a good voice for this kind of thing.
I want to touch on this.

You are probably already aware that your voice does not sound like that of James Earl Jones, Christoper Lee, Brian Blessed, Morgan Freeman, John Rhys-Davies, or even Richard Burton. And that's fine. These are people known for their cultured, stately, formal tone and delivery, but this video is not about that. Your voice sounds more ordinary, more vulnerable, and is definitely the kind of voice that I expect to tell me about how a 9yr-old discovered comics.

So I guess what I'm saying is...you should always wear the outfit when you record.

And if DC allows it, you should also wear it to any interviews you ever do. ;)

So, I don't know what prompted me to try this, but I'm giving Patreon a go. Right now, it's a per-video payment rather than monthly. So you know, if you chip in $5, that's probably only $5 for like a year.

EDIT: I'm currently working on a video for the Marvel comic, Nextwave. Aiming for next week on it.

Welp, new Series Consideration video is up a day early for Patreon backers. It'll be made public to everyone as of tomorrow, though!

EDIT: Also, in the meantime, I've posted the poll for voting on the next video following Box Brown's ANDRE THE GIANT biographical novel.
