As Adam and Jay watched shared the sandwich, each man eating from one side towards the middle, their eyes locked. Never before had Adam noticed the slight imperfections in Jay's face...the subtle lines under his eyes, his larger than average pores, and the tiny tuft of nose hair billowing out of his left nostril. In that moment, in the candlelight, he did not care. They finished the sandwich, their lips gently brushing together.
Adam drew back, and caught his breath. He gazed into Jay's eyes, which were catching the flame of the candle, giving them an ethereal quality. "The Canadian bacon was delicious," he quietly uttered, his breathing getting quicker and more uneven.
Jay, playing coy, simply stated, "Out here...we just call it ham."
And on that night, Adam truly knew what ham was.
