The New NHL thread

The one thing that seems to be sticking with me about these things, is that since they did not intend to harm the player, they do not suffer the consequences. I moving more and more towards hard set punishments for penalties, leaving the bench is already a 10 game suspension and it happens very rarely as a result. Any finding of intent to injure, suspension starts at 15 games, if the refs on the ice see fit to give you a game misconduct you are suspended for a single game as a minimum.

Yeah, knew this was coming from the Teachers. They have a strong push to convert assets to cash right now with the wave of retirees expected. Still they made off like bandits, initial investment of $50M and now will get paid $1.3-1.6B. Already two buyers ready to bid, once they get past the legal riff raff.

The sale of MLSE is actually very very bad for the NHL as a whole. The two primary buyers are communications giants and intend to use their cable franchises to broadcast the Leafs games at a loss. Not a financial loss to themselves but by selling themselves the rights at below market value. Thus in the eyes of the NHL finance committee the Leafs go from being hugely successful and a source of income sharing to the other teams, to a team that now needs revenue distributed to it.

The problem was not starting JS Giguerre last night, the problem was not starting him at center! Seriously, blaming a goalie for not winning when the team doesn't score.

Multimillion dollar goalscorers: 0 goals
Call ups, journeymen and defencemen: 5 goals

...whattus the fuckus, crazy game.:)

Number of fourth-generation hat-tricks in NHL: 1.

Sick, the Canucks just clenched the west and are two wins away from the presidents trophy!

Won't mean a thing in two weeks but for now it's nice.

Or as per the standard Presidents Trophy winners, golfing after the first round.

Looks like Malhotra will return next season which is great news.

Golfing after the first is still better than not making the first at all. 2007-2008 red wings won it all though so who knows.

I agree it is great news he better wear a visor if and when he does come back.

I really don't understand how NHL teams can get insurance for their players that do not wear visors or full face protection. Had that surgery been unsuccessful, he'd be done for life and paid out on the insurers dime.

I think the NHLPA might have some kind of disability pension...eye injury looks to be a pretty low priority for them though.

They probably pay gargantuan premiums. Visor or no this injury seems kind of like a freak thing. I have noticed any kind of catalogue of similar events or outcry about visors the way I've seen about concussions.

You'd think that so simple a thing as the full shield that the juniors wear be an easy way to remedy these injuries. But alas other factors are keeping it at bay.

Regardless, that's not why I'm here. Buffalo tonight knocked my beloved Buds out of the playoff race and onto the golf course.

So go Capitals I guess, maybe.

Hurricanes devastated the Thrashers last night 6-1. Which means it all comes down to today for the Hurricanes and the Rangers. Game 82. If the Canes win they're in Rangers are out. Lose in OT the Rangers must lose somehow. Lose in regulation, so must the Rangers.

So glad I have tickets to the Lightning @ Hurricanes game tonight.

Oof. Wings had to hang on at the end, but I'll take it. Datsyuk is amazing.
