To preempt any discussion of this, SWGEmu is completely legal. They do not use Sony's server code in any way.
There is no pirating of any kind going on here. This is unlike private/emu servers of any other commercial game.

The SWGEmu team has been creating their own implementation of a Galaxies server prior to the Combat Upgrade (CU) and the New Game Enhancements (NGE). In addition to fixing bugs that Sony ignored, they will optionally include different server features (Too many to list here) for those who want them, and new content.

The developers will host a 'pure' or 'vanilla' server, but allow other groups to modify the code for their own purposes.

A little background on the game for those unfamiliar with it.
Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) is a MMORPG, based on the Star Wars Universe. The original idea for SWG was not to live the iconic movie life of Star Wars, more so, it was designed to allow the player to create a character in the Star Wars Universe, pick their own path and live their dreams. From the onset, SWG was a huge success with a large fan base. SWG was not designed to be based on iconic characters. The iconic characters (Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc.) flowed around the players, but the players were merely citizens of the Star Wars Galactic Universe. A player could choose to join the Empire, the Rebellion, or just live a life and preferring not to become involved in the Galactic War that was raging around them. Pre-CU was a true sandbox, no linear content and no levels. Game-play was completely left up to the player and what they wanted to do.
On June 30th, the first 'live' server will be opened to the public. SunCrusher

If you need the game client, PM me, or mention it in a post. You can buy it on eBay or Amazon for a few dollars, or, *cough*robSony*cough* check your PMs.

Currently, the SWGEmu devs are not planning on restricting the number of characters per account. This is because they are permitting and ever encouraging multi-clienting, or as WoW players know it, multi-boxing.
Also, if you and other members of your household play behind a router, you can also share an account among individual computers. Word of warning, if you and other members of your household decide on separate accounts, you need to clear it with the appropriate forum admins, because they automatically ban additional accounts from the same IP address.

Here is a compilation of basically all of the PreCU guides and information.

Start building your characters with this.
Download Launchpad Enhanced (LPE). This little app downloads all of the SWGEmu files and includes a lot of additional functionality.
For those of you who longer have computers built in 2004, here is a tool made by one of the SWGEmu devs to adjust advanced graphical settings. (See 2nd post)
A nifty Windows 7/Vista Sidebar gadget to show the uptime of the Nova Test Center.

So, one of my friends suggested that if we do any RPing, it would be cool to do so as Mandalorians. So after looking through Karen Traviss/LucasArts' official dictionary i came up with this.
Ramikad or <RKD> for a guild name. It means means commando, and just sounds cool.
For a player town: Darasuum Bral translates into 'Eternal City' or 'Eternal Fortress'.

As of now, I'm going to roll a Master Smuggler/Master Pistoleer/Medic as my main, named Cuyval Dar.
My secondary, which will be a pure crafter, is a Master Architect/Master Politician/Master Merchant.
I figure that I can handle the mayoral and town crafting duties until we can set up a system with a council and trade off being Mayor after a set amount of time (Just so we do not accidentally elect someone outside of our guild).

I suppose I'd try it if I had the SWG client. But whatever.

Not saying that I would know where to find something like this. But if anyone one lacking the SWG client said so, and happened to check their PMs, they might possibly find a way to get it. :slywink:

I know that there must be some of you tired of [insert MMO here], so if there is any of you interested, hit me up here or in a PM.

It would be incredible to form a guild/player city with a number of forumites.

Might hafta try this. I played SWG back when it first came out and just couldn't get into it, then with all the negative press it got I just abandoned it, but if people are willing to put this sort of effort into reviving it, hey, I'll give it a shot.

Thoughts?

The names sound cool.

Second the question about registering/client. Are there any test servers we can use to check it out ahead of time?

Cuyval Dar

Yes, you need the Star Wars Galaxies client from Sony. You can buy it on ebay or Amazon for a few dollars, or, *cough* check your PMs.
SWGEmu has the only public test/alpha server. After you sign up at http://www.swgemu.com/
(Forum accounts are the same as game accounts) download http://tiny.cc/JqNNf. This little app downloads all of the SWGEmu files and includes a lot of additional functionality.

Word of warning, there is major rubberbanding whenever the debugger is on.

This all for free? That's awesome.. not sure if I'll have the time though.

I'll wait a few weeks before asking you to set me up.

aww, I just screwed up my 4400 post count :(

SWG had always intrigued me from the day I first heard about it. The idea it had was immense. I mean, entire planets in a Galaxy to explore? I heard the implentation wasn't done well, though the thing that interested me the most was the bounty hunting system as well as the space expansion "creating your own ship" just sounded so perfect.

Is this EMU just the vanilla or is it "with expansion"?

The only 'official' server (hosted by the devs) will be vanilla, with bugfixes or rebalancing that SOE either botched or never did, as I understand it. The server software will have options for third-party groups to adjust everything.

As far as the implementation of the game goes, SOE screwed things up with not fixing a myriad of bugs and making huge changes that the player base disagreed with. The gameplay, of what little I experienced was awesome.

I... wow. Yes, I'd love to give this a shot. I've been on a bit of a SW binge lately and the change to try a "new" SW game is one I don't want to miss. Especially with some familiar names.

Edit:

Should put that in my sig; it must be one of the few SWG badges one could actually get :smirk:

Apologies for another double post, but I would just like to direct the traffic of this thread to my user blog dedicated to SWGEmu.
If we get enough people involved with the game, a sticky linking to said blog might be in order to get more people interested in this.

Ah what the hell, I'm feeling nostalgic. I'm in. My smuggler/commando will live again!

I still probably have my discs around somewhere...

EDIT: Just signed up. Username is "dunny"

uh guys..this is highly illegal.. are we trying to get Ed in trouble?

even linking to the guy's blog, which details the whole private server thing, is against forum rules.. Private game servers are illegal, even if it may be cool to use them..

If you read through the OP he says that it's legal. I'll check into it but I've heard that he might be right. Thanks for looking out for me, though!

This topic has done to death on the SWGEmu forums. This is NOT a private server. It uses no Sony server code at all. Private servers use stolen/leaked/hacked server code. The SWGEmu project has taken so long because they are creating the server code from scratch.

The only resources from Sony being used are on the client side. Even then, Publish 14.1 (PreCU) is essentially abandonware, as the current Sony Live servers will become soon, since Lucasarts is pulling the Star Wars license from Sony.
Sony has refused innumerable requests by the community to bring back PreCU in any form, even in separate "classic" servers, like other MMO developers have done.
They do not acknowledge the existence of PreCU in any way.
Sony has even called the Emu 'just a mod'.

A few years ago, Sony and LucasArts reps had a phone conference with the SWGEmu devs,
and while most of the conversation was covered by NDAs (to the best of my recollection),Sony/LucasArts have never issued any form of 'cease and desist' or other legal action.

The official stance by SWGEmu staff is that you must own a legitimate copy of SWG,not the trial or a pirated copy.

Also, I have not actually specifically mentioned any illegal means of acquiring the game client, so SeriousJay or a mod should probably edit his post.

Ok, guys, we need to invade the SWGEmu forums in full force. After joining, and typing "TheExile" in the referrer box during registration, join our social group. Lets push our user count up to beat out all others.

Just installed my game, patched it up and was able to login. Pretty easy.

I look forward to playing the game, hopefully it's complete and stable.

you. are. so. dense.

anyway, i have the original release discs, but there are 2 problems i guess;

1. they're version 1.0 (or whatever the release version was) will this be alright?

2. i havent tried them yet, and they might be scratched. in any case, i would like to not say that i may or may not be hypothetically looking for a pm from alleged "original poster" cuyval dar >>

Yes, any version will work, as long as it is not the trial version.
And I may or may not have sent a PM. Hypothetically, of course.

i vote for tatooine.
This was my first thought, but EVERYONE is going to be in Tatooine, which can be a good and bad thing. I was thinking about Naboo, or Talus. And when you think about it, Dantooine could be a good pick due to the availability of starter and difficult mobs.

We need to be somewhere that enough people go often, but not totally swarming with players.
