I recall an interview he did with Bob Costas. Ted Williams was sitting next to him, and when the subject was hitting, Tony was like the nervous pupil sitting next to his old teacher.

Best hitter in the National League. Shouldn't have been cursed with playing for a team like the Padres, but he was loyal to the end.

It wasn't a curse, he loved the team and the city. He never wanted to go anywhere else.
