The article above gives a great deal of insight, while the actual list is below:

And while I rarely donate to telemarketer charities, I have donated to at least one of these in the past.

Be careful who you give your money to in the name of charity.

I always have feared this.

This sort of thing is exactly why I don't give to charities I've never heard of.

I have certain causes I have prioritized in my mind as the ones I want to support. For each cause, I have a set of organizations and charities I trust to do good work. I give money to those groups, and no one else.

Man, I've never been more glad to be a cheap jerk.

I've always been conscious of this. I'm grateful for these studies, and various sites that help you learn how charities function and spend their money.

Charity? Pfah. Let adversity grind humanity into a shining example of the truth: that chaos, strife and adversity are the true impetus behind advancement of the species. Curse your own wretched birth that you were not born with power!

This is why I volunteer instead of giving money.

And that's definitely not how one advances the species.

I wonder how far down that list Susan G. Cohman(sp), United Way and the Red Cross are.

They're not too bad, and the Red Cross is about as good as it gets. You can look them up at http://charitynavigator.org/

Unless you're the Red Cross in China, then you have no credibility

You need to realize that the Red Cross isn't one huge organization, it's actually a group of organizations that share funding , organization, methods, and ideals. This is because local governments tend to react better when the people trying to help are also locals who speak the same language and know the same customs.

Hell, some of the organizations work under a Red Crescent instead of a cross because of their Muslim leanings and a Red Crystal is used in places where nether option seems appropriate (like Israel, who tried to get a Red Star of David for a long time).

Oh I realize that, it's just they went from raising millions in the last earthquake to barely raising over $20,000 in the most recent one. It's rare that I see such a major charity take a nosedive in a country. Thankfully it is a separate entity.

Depends on who's doing it. The race may advance because lesser genes aren't transmitted just as much as from good genes that do get passed on.

A lot of breast cancer foundations on that list. They're really milking that disease.
