Soooo much deeply manly man love for the Dresden Codak. Shame he decided to cut his Koala Wallop forum ties. He said there is much more discussion on his comic than there in other places, and he had no time for a forum moderation gig.

I'm probably going to end up bringing this up in a later count, but I always enjoy how Parson can just throw off Erfworld residents just by doing things that no native would think to do. It's interesting to watch the benefits of his outsider status.

Always thought Misty was adorable. She is one of the only Erfworld residents to actually help Parson do things. Unfortunately for her, she also serves as a tangible example of what linking does and can do to a caster.

The artist did an "art reboot" last year, that's why it may seem as there are two beginnings, the old art is black and white, and frankly eyeless. I also find it to be a great and very endearing style. Minimalist yest highly detailed, as though she draws ONLY what she needs and yet does it quite well.
The current color strips, I don't like the story line of the reboot as well mainly because it lost my favorite line ever "I'll call up a few hard opium-hitting Whigs and hitch you to a plow like a mule. I will go pre-industrial on your candy ass!"

It's comics like this that, for a time, made Dresden Codak my second favorite webcomic, right after Ryan Armand's Minus.

Dusty668
Yes Allen, reading others posts is a good thing-but that's not what I'm here to say.
I am here to tell you about a comic. One I have previously followed for it's great artwork, zany characteristics, amazing story, and surreality.
I was wrong about this comic. The previous episodes are a pale shadow of what Winston Rountree has done in this episode.
This is not a kids comic, it is not an easy comic, it is not going to give you it's story in a simple 3 panel frame, if you want that, I suggest you erase all your bookmarks and just read dilbert or whatever pap your friends call funny around the watercooler, or go get 'Mondays, I hate them.' tattooed on your ass. If this is what you desire, you have worse than my scorn, you have my pity.
This story you will need to work for. Wall of text? no it is a mountain. Like a mountain though, it's upthrust fold has riches for those willing to work for it.
I literally had tears in my eyes when I finished. Here is the direct link:
Most of the things you post I still have no idea what they are since you don't give a link too.
Guess I'm just sloooow.
#352

I had links on everything. All the images were links to the websites. You just had to click on an image to be taken to the website the image was from. But not anymore. Sigh.
Dawwwww. Also, how about them backgrounds? Those lineless backgrounds that look nice and allow anything with lined borders to be in the foreground. Show you the debris in panels 1 and 2, then shove it in the background for the rest of the comic. You already know it's there, and the rest of the comic is about the people, so why continuously emphasize the debris, right?

I do think it's very odd that people seem to either like achewood or xkcd. Because, see, I find that strip insufferable. It's tediously long, over-dialogued (to coin a phrase), and the art hurts my eyes. But, hey, to each their own.

Vintage!
From Roast Beef's blog, July 2004: I saw a weird thing.
Man I was kicking it on the curb just now putting out a butt after lunch and in the entire dry street and empty gutters there was this one ball of hair like the size of a baseball. Like a dust bunny, you know, all with thick dust altocumulus and tiny fragments of paper and stuff in it (think of an electron could). I guess it fell out of a car? Anyhow I just sat lookin' at it for a while thinking about all the heads the hair probably came off of, and then thinking about my own hair and how it's pretty sad that when a hair falls off you it just goes out of your life, it's got your code and everything all locked up in it and it was a part of you that you didn't say goodbye to. So I came up in here and turned on that Beck song "Lost Cause" on WinAmp because that's kind of how I'm feeling. I don't know why this little stuff makes me depressed, I mean if Ray saw that ball of hair he'd probably go get his putter or have a drink and call some friends. I guess it's cause I grew up in Circumstances and he didn't.

Allen, who is Quiet
Yeah, Ray would have a drink and call his friends.

This is Ray, who once threw The Most Excellent Party Ever because he put 2000 flushes in his toilet and thought the colour was tropical feeling.
Is he serious? Is he rebooting or is this a joking one-shot?

I'm pretty sure it's a joke, since that design kills all of the visual charm the Devil has.

The Nique Reboot also took out her redeeming qualities focusing strictly on the commercial side. While she did love her shopping sprees, she still had the undercurrent of save the world.
What the hell? Has someone been reading my Fade notes?

Soliloquy
Am I the only one who thinks Erfworld would be a better comic if it didn't have the text updates? I used to like them, but now I feel like they just spell out background info and motivation that would otherwise have to be inferred from the comic itself.
It makes the whole experience seem a lot... flatter to me. I don't know...
#438
Gusto
I can see your point, but I don't think they spell out background info or motivation any more than the comic itself. This is especially considering most of the 1st chapter was shown from Parson's point of view, where both he and the audience had absolutely NO idea of what was going on. The text updates between chapters allowed the audience a better window into the motivations of secondary characters, but nothing that we couldn't have possibly speculated given what we already knew, in my opinion.
I feel the opposite way - I believe they help enrich the experience, and provide the audience with a fuller perspective on a world we still know so little about.

GodDAMN I love talking webcomics theory.
Maybe it's just the lit geek in me... but I like it better when the thoughts and motivations of the characters are mostly garnered through speculation, instead of being stated in concrete terms. It adds an elements of subtlety, surprise and uncertainty that are lost, now.
I mean, yeah... the focus is mostly on minor characters, and I suppose it does flesh out the world in many ways. But I've always felt that keeping things a little bit vague allows the readers to fill in the blanks in the back of their mind with ideas and meanings that surpass anything that the writer could create on their own. I think that's why many films that leave much unexplained become cult classics. See: Primer, Donnie Darko, Blade Runner, and Reservoir Dogs.
And yeah, talking webcomics theory is AWESOME.

I love the text updates but yah having it on nonfocus characters would be even better I think. Like the one about the spear carrier Wrigley, that was awesome.

Allen, who is Quiet
I think the Jillian example was actually one of the weakest text updates in Book 2. A lot of the other ones were referring to units reacting to updates in battle, royalty reacting to updates in battle, or general background for characters. With Jill, I don't really care how she got to a battle. And I don't need to be told how she feels when I just got shown in the comic right before the update.
For knowing the talk was coming, Jillian told you that Wanda would want to talk. Wanda hinted at her intentions with the carrot and the stick comment. It wasn't too hard to speculate this parley would be coming.

Finally, Wanda and Jillian's outfits make sense. Now, who's Riff Raff?
Also, if Jillians "mystery" caster turns out to be a Turnamancer, I'm hoping we get a "Time Warp" sequence.
My guess? Wanda's not gonna turn. She likes to be in control, and being UNDER Jillian would drive her crazy.
#464
Allen, who is Quiet
Jillian is aware of that. That's why she switched from "my side" to Faq, denoting a common side.
I think Wanda is going to take the offer, just because it sets up a bigger conflict than the last book. They spent all summer talking about how powerful these decrypted are, so they'd make perfect enemies.

Soliloquy
Honestly, I hope that Wanda doesn't turn and go against Parson, because then the story would just be a rehash of what happened in Volume 1-- a Genius Warlord goes up against overwhelming odds.
I'm hoping that the challenges in this volume are a bit more... subtle.
#469
Allen, who is Quiet
I think they have plenty of options to change the focus of the story for when Wanda betrays Stanley. I have faith it won't be a rehash with higher stakes.
---------- Post added at 09:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:08 PM ----------
Especially considering that since Parson is pretty goddamned genre-savvy, it seems he would pull a Batman and already have failsafes in place for Wanda's betrayal. I'm pretty sure he even knows the circumstances that lead Wanda to Stanley's side in the first place, and how tenuous their continued allegiance is.
#471
Soliloquy
I dunno... I get the feeling that he wants to have as little involvement in what's going on as possible now, so he probably wouldn't have any failsafes in place.
#472
Allen, who is Quiet
Well, judging by the time spent that Parson has no way to move, I suspect a flight from Gobwin Knob is imminent. Parson's inability to leave leads to conflict.
He can move through portals. That's it. His move is 0 and he's too heavy to leave on a dwagon. He's probably going to do some self-sacrificing strategy for everyone else to survive and get away from the capital so they don't fall to Wanda's massive army and Jill's massive hatred of Stanley.

Buckley has a habit of taking too long to get to his point, which is frankly perfect for the timing in this comic.
As I mentioned to Soliloquy a few pages back, I could discuss webcomic theory for hours. There are very few strips that I dislike irrationally.
#491

My favorite argument is still the "he uses way too many words". One wonders what happens when these folks accidentally stumble upon a book.
#492
Gusto
Books aren't meant to be 15 second diversions, and CAD is not meant to be a literary masterpiece. At least I hope not.
#493
Fun Size
Agreed, but it's not like you can't still read it in a few seconds. Besides, he seems to have toned that down some lately.
#494
Gusto
Sure enough. I'm not saying it's a good argument. Hell, Order of the Stick is one of my favourite webcomics. The problem a lot of people have with CAD is that Tim often overwrites, adding far too much unnecessary dialogue that ultimately throws off the comedic timing of the joke.

re: Erfworld
Oh...no twist. Sigh.
#496
Gusto
I disagree, it's an even BETTER twist. Now that both Stanley and Wanda are attuned, a divine form of Loyalty binds them. Wanda is being controlled by Titanic mandate. This might explain Charlie's persistent involvement in Stanley's situations as well, besides mere prophet.
Interesting.....
#497
Allen, who is Quiet
It's just that Gobwin Knob has been royally kicking everyone's asses for months now. I was looking forward to this as being some kind of monumental shake-up. Wanda and the de-croaked have been shown again and again to be incredibly powerful. Where's the conflict?
#498
Gusto
I suspect that the shake-up might come from within. Even from the early summer text updates, it's pretty clear that Stanley feels his power and influence are slowly being overshadowed by Wanda's. I suspect he might pull a hissy fit and disband her, which doesn't seem like all that big of a threat until se realizes that her army of decrypted is kinda all sound and fury without Parson's superior strategic mind.
It's kinda out there, but I'd like to see how Wanda lasts under that kind of solitude and as a barbarian.
#499
Fun Size
I have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about, but I giggle a little every time someone writes "Gobwin Knob".

Soliloquy
They ride dwagons, there. And Fight with giant spidews. It's a fun place.
oh, and
I'm actually a much bigger fan of the type of conflict going on now. And there is conflict, believe it or not. Just a different sort that we're used to.
Do you actually think that Wanda's evil army of decrypted soldiers sweeping past opposing forces is a good thing? What we've got is an army of darkness taking over the world with little standing in his way, and the protagonist--a brilliant strategist who apparently no longer has to follow orders--is on the side of the evil army, but quite clearly opposed to the violence that's happening.
Parson has a completely alien set of morals that Erfworld has never seen before, and it's been heavily suggested that his influence may be what's needed to end the meaningless fighting that the entire world is subject to.
Of course, Rob's a brilliant writer. His story always end up going in different directions than everyone seems to expect, so I can't say I have any idea what's going to happen, or how things will end up going in that direction (if they even do.) But there's some brilliant conflict and tension going on right now, and I'm enjoying going along for the ride.
