Yikes! Pushin' it pretty late, but I made it here, haha. Great to meet everybody! Forgive the slowness; I had to fend off the evil Procrastination Platypus that lives in my mind. I hope to destroy him once and for all by the end of the month.

But yeah - here we go!

Day One: Squiggles with the technical pen.
FebCog1.png

I'm gonna try to mix things up this month. Do some life drawings to learn things, do some style experiments to hopefully discover things and do some other things that I haven't thought of yet, heh. Maybe some comics! I always did want to start up my own webcomic (but the Platypus always stopped me, curse him).

But yeah - lookin' forward to the month! Here we gooooooooo:

i already told you how much i love this.

this will be the third internet communication to let you know;
i love this.

Whoa, it's like R. Crumb and Don Martin had a drug tripping baby. That's a compliment. Neat. Of course I remember you from Sketch Tavern. The SPEED with which you and Fennewalde draw is amazing.

C

CogNoman

Haha, thanks guys!
And Fade: If Crumb and Don Martin somehow managed to conceive a child together, I wouldn't blame the kid for being drug-tripping, haha.

Day 2: More squiggles
FebCog2.jpg

I think I might actually have some time tomorrow, so hooopefully I can push myself to try something more finished (by announcing that, I'm hoping I might actually follow up on it, heh).
Catch ya in 24-

EDIT: Oh - I'm just wondering; does anybody know if it's possible for me to change my thread title? I was thinking of changing it every time I upload a new pic (so today's thread title would be "Wee Willy Wunchkin eats two bananas."). I dunno, just figured I'd do it for the giggles, heh. But when I went to edit the first post, I couldn't find the option to edit the thread title.
If it isn't possible to constantly update the thread title, no worries at all, I shall leave it as is-
(i.e., "awesome", haha)

Fenn: If you mean "quickly and with a technical pen", happy to oblige:

Day 3
FebCog3b.jpg

A friend typed the message "a crack pipe for a trachea and a beer hat full of LCD" today, and I assume he meant "LSD", but the imagery was too good to pass up, heh.
(For the record, I don't do any of those drugs... except for the LCD. I o.d. on that shit all the time you, that shit is fricky' wickyicky knaw'm sayin' a friday night and a good blast of the ol' LCD and we be partyin shnizzas yo)

Oh and for the record, I'm gonna try to be posting all my images before 3am Eastern Standard Time. Meaning this one's late by a half-hour, heh, but hopefully this'll be the only late one.

Hah, the Full Tolkien. He incorporated errors into his text as intentional. Neat idea, and I like the drawing. He reminds me of this kid Johnny I knew from elementary school who was born with no arms. His parents thought it would give Johnny an edge if they gave him giant pencils for prosthetics. It was all good until he stabbed Jinkles the Bully in the spleen. Which would've been almost acceptable, except the Bully title was ironic, like calling a fat guy Tiny.

CogNoman

Thanks fade-

grurgh. This one's way late.

Day 4: "What I had done at 8:30pm on Day 4, when I had to head out, assuming I'd be back in time to finish it and post it, but ended up not. So here's what I had anyway...even though it's late, so it doesn't count"
FebCog4.jpg

This pic is late for Day 4, so it looks like I'm already kinda sucking at this beating-procrastination-thing, but I'll try to get this one finished... and then get a Day 5 pic up later too.
It's a long month; we're (or at least I am) gonna fail probably a few more times, but we just gotta persevere and beat our demons/platypuses.
Okay, no more late pics from here on in - that's the goal.

C

CogNoman

Coloured the pic up to make up for my lateness. I'll get another pic done later.

FebCog4b.png

Also, fade - I forgot to say this last night because I was too busy slapping myself for being late, but your school sounds AWESOME, haha.
If I ever end up creating my own children with various objects around the house, I might have to get the name of that school off you-

It's too bad the shell is unassuming, because it probably wouldn't have been placed in such a predicament if it assumed a few things about its passengers before allowing them to board.

C

CogNoman

Haha, thanks Puffy. It's funny that you think the shell allowed them to board, because I was half-assuming that they might have just high-jacked it, heh. I think your interpretation makes more sense, though, heh, because if the shell was so unassuming...he'd probably just carry people without having to be high-jacked. Perhaps I could learn from the shell, hmm...heh. (But yeah, there's no actual story for the title, heh, so I guess we'll never know)

Today: Figured I'd try a brush to try to push myself to break out of my art box a bit. I haven't touched a brush in years and even then it was only as a brief experiment for fun. But what is this month for if not to push ourselves, eh?

Swirling a brush around, trying to draw freehand with it but nothing came to mind so just ended up with a page of squiggles, heh:
FebCog5b.gif

After freehanding wasn't working, tried brushing from pictures:
FebCog5a.jpg

Picture 1. Googled "woman", ended up with this...I think she's a Bollywood star.

Picture 2. Googled "car". I thought this was a picture, so I downloaded it. But it turned out to be a painting. Oh well, it's a nice painting.

Picture 3. Duck

The picture based brushings are pretty nice (I think the car is the best one), but I have to say that what I really like is the dude outline on the left of the second picture.

fade

Staff member
That brush style is awesome.
Added at: 14:57
I want to see more of those, actually. The duck particularly stands out me. It's kind of like a turn-of-the-century newspaper illustration or a wood block print (whatever the technical name for that is).

C

CogNoman

Haha, thanks Terrik-
Jelly: The guy on the left is certainly the most abstract....hm. Maybe that's the trick to using brushes. Don't be afraid to let go, not obsess over details, and just go abstract.
fade: Thank you, f. I can't remember the term either... "intaglio", maybe? I dunno, not sure what "intaglio" is, but I believe I've heard the term in relation to wood block prints, heh (suppose I could Google it...).

This "sloppy" inking is pretty new to me and I ended up having a page covered way faster than expected...so I put some colours on the page to make it look like I did more work, heh.

Day 6: Inking with the blunt (wood) end of a brush, then adding details with technical pen to make the slop look like things:
FebCog6.jpg

B

Biannoshufu

I'd prefer to see it without the background textures, myself.

C

CogNoman

Thanks guys!
Bianno: Yeah...if I had had a bit more confidence in the lines (if I had put more thought or effort in to them), I would have just put up the straight inks. Instead, I tried to use Photoshop trickery to try to polish it up, heh. But yeah... a solid ink drawing with time and effort put in might be better.

Anyways - Glurgh. Missed a day.
Not for lack of trying, though. I actually had a great idea for a pic, but just didn't have time to finish, and it wasn't the kind of thing that could go up half-posted. I'll try to get it finished soon.... when you see it, you'll know what I mean, heh.

Day 8: Meant to do life drawings, but these came out instead-
FebCog8.jpg

Day 9: Technical Pen drawings from objects around the house (ran out of time on the camera)
FebCog9.jpg

C

CogNoman

Thanks fade. If I'm to be unabashedly honest about that boot drawing, I think the part that I find most interesting is the shoelace shadow. I generally avoid putting shadows in my drawing (mainly because I just don't think about them; my brain seems to work like a draw-er, seeing things in terms of "using lines to outline the physical objects" as opposed to the brain of a painter, who sees things in terms of light and shade), so that shadow was kind of a risk for me. But now that I've seen how cast shadows like that shoelace shadow can work, I'm tempted to throw in some more cast shadows in future drawings. Hm. I guess we'll see though.

Not today anyway, heh. Day 10: Experimenting with colour in Photoshop, because I love looking at colour, but I don't know how to paint and would like to learn-
FebCog10.jpg

C

CogNoman

Haha, yep, Mr. Jelly.

Day 11. Back to the ol' technical pen. Wanted to push myself to do life drawings or learn to paint or something...but in the end, doodling with my pen for fun won out. Threw some shades on it to hopefully make the lineart less confusing.

J

Jiarn

Your imagination and art style are just jaw dropping Cog, I'm sure you get that all the time though.

C

CogNoman

Haha, thanks Jiarn, but no, it's not that common. I'm horribly unproductive when it comes to drawing; in the 6 months prior February, I probably only actually "drew" anything on maybe...12 of those days or so. I've had a goal of "making a daily webcomic" ever since 2005, heh, and so far all I have to show for myself is a short spurt of comics I made in '08 and another spurt from '10. I mean, I'm constantly dreaming of comics I would make and that kind of thing, but I never actually sit down and make them. That's part of the reason why I like this "draw-every-day" thing, heh - because for some reason it somehow bypasses my procrastinational tendencies and gets me to get off my duff. Not sure how it does that, but I'm secretly hoping that this February will be the February that will finally push me in to being regular with my work ethic, and so I can actually make something, heh. Thanks for the words-

That being said, here's some more doodles for Day 12, heh. Meant to do something more complicated (like life drawings or learning to paint), but doodling was more fun-
FebCog12.jpg

Jiarn

I especially love your little "tag" CogNorman in every picture. Personally I prefer your doodles, if you ever had them collected in a book, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Reminds me of this book series I loved as a kid, with a kid with like a house in his head or something.

I'm totally amazed by your style. I just can't see myself creating anything that awesome! Do you start in one point and see what happens by the time you get to the end, or do you have these all planned out from the beginning??

That'd be the cover of Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic.

Jiarn: Haha, thanks. You're making me start to think I should get off my duff and actually make something more than doodles, heh. And as for the little "cog" thing, yeah... it's kind of a fun thing that I like to hide in the pictures. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to add it in this February, haha - I've already forgotten to add it in to some of the days so far (but I won't tell you which ones, heh heh).

Bumble: Yeah, for these last "doodle" ones I've just been taking my technical pen, starting somewhere on the page, and then just seeing what comes out. I usually start by drawing an eyeball...and then from there, just add in little things, whatever I happen to be thinking of. If I get an idea for something I want to add in to the picture, but it's too complicated for me to just freehand it, I'll usually lightly/loosely pencil in a loose guideline to follow, and then go back to freehanding with my pen. When I freehand like this, though, I should mention that it takes me a loooong time. I go reeeally slowly. Like, today's picture and yesterday's picture each took me more than an hour and a half to draw - and there's almost nothing on the page! Just a few characters. I'm hoping that if I do it enough, though, I'll eventually get faster. But I don't want to force myself to go faster until I'm ready. I used to draw "really fast" and really sloppy and loose, and over time I noticed that my drawings in general were all just getting lazier and lazier because I just kept cutting corners in order to make things fast. So I've kinda shifted my way of thinking recently in to forcing myself to slow down...and then hopefully build up speed that way.
Hm. That was probably waaaaay longer a reply than you were expecting, heh. Sorry B - the last two-thirds of that were just me thinking aloud to myself, haha.

Fade: Indeed - I loved that book too as a kid, but now that I think back, I don't think I actually liked the drawings very much when I was younger, haha. Only the poems. Odd.

Day 13. Life drawings will hopefully come tomorrow. I didn't really leave myself enough time to focus on something new and risky, so just resorted to the same stuff:

I'm digging the shading. Speaking of the cog, one of the first things I noticed at Sketch Tavern was that everyone seemed to have a logo. I had to do it to after that, but I always forget to apply it.

C

CogNoman

Thanks fade - yeah, shading things is new to me...but I'm starting to think more and more it might be good to do, so I'm just fiddling around with it a bit to see what might work.

Day 14. I really need to break out of my box and start doing some life drawings, or different styles, or trying different media, but again didn't have a lot of time, so kinda just resorted to my default again. I'll push myself tomorrow, heh-
FebCog14.jpg

And there's also this, heh. (I actually made it on the 13th, but it was too early to post it then, heh - and now it's almost too late ha, but I'm still posting it anyway):
halforums.jpg

I'm loving this Valentine's forum scheme, though. I've said it before, but this forum is using some crazy-advanced forum technology. I assume their must be some genius webdesigners/programmers here somewhere?
