While discussing what to put on her iPod, my daughter declared that she wanted "the best rock song ever", and then asked me what it was. My mind a blur of rock, and to be honest, I froze.

So, figuring this wouldn't be too contentious a topic (heh), I put it to you, and to the forum at large: what is the greatest rock song ever?

stairway to heaven or Bohemian Rhapsody?

that is a HARD question. i'm not even sure i agree with myself.

Freebird, Born to Run, Heart- Magic Man, Master of Puppets would all be contenders for me.

I think the tribute to the greatest song in the world is the closest we will ever get. If only they'd remembered how it went!

If I asked for the greatest rock song i would want something fast and, you know, rocking. Stairway may be an awesome song but it wouldnt fit what I wanted.

I am longing for the day that Rock n Roll makes a comeback.

Mr. Loaf has a great set of pipes, but I just don't think that his songs hold up as Greatest.

I believe most discussions of this sort come down to Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody. They are the Coke/Pepsi, Windows/Mac, Domestic/Import, Baked/Fried representatives of Rock.

Stairway and Rhapsody get all the glory for being epic rock songs, but there's at least a couple more that deserve the 'epic' title.
