I know this was posted a while ago, but /it's/ still awesome.

and then a short follow-up

Here's the website for it

And the "Babel Research Company" website

Personally, I love it. All of the tie-in stuff to just one video, is amazing.

Neato. I don't understand, but I like it.

The top video was a test video to see of the special effects would look alright, the sounds/music was ripped from other stuff as temporary placeholders. Those won't appear in the actual movie[/QUOTE]

Aww, I was hoping this was Half Life 2 the movie. I was like 'Is that the Citadel? But... those guys aren't dressed like Combine. HL2 didn't have a mysterious box. Is this like a Half Life 2 prequel fanmade movie from the Seven Hour War?' and so on.

My mind went strange places trying to rationalize all of that into continuity in the intervening time since I watched it and now saw your post that it just borrowed some of the sounds. Ah.

Nicely done with a small budget but some parts really made me cringe. The heavy HL2 influences (or shameless rip offs, really) don't really thrill me that much as it might thrill others.

Damn. Wish I could do those kinds of effects.

He says he wrote the entire story ages ago and is finally putting it together but yeah it has some very obvious Half-Life influences.
More than just influences :p

- the swirling sky is a direct HL2 Citadel rip off
- the people in white suits use combine sounds ripped from the game
- the flying gunship is very very VERY similar to the ships you had in HL2
- silent actor (Gordon never said a word or sound even when shot)
- laboratory test gone wrong?
- first person setting
- the view screens on the street (which use the sounds from the game as well)
etc.

Basically, this is a low budget real life Half Life set in the Netherlands.

He's not even a film student, he's a physics major.
Says he learned it all from reading books and the internet.
Well fuck. I guess I don't even have an excuse then.

Everyone who thought "dick" when you read the thread title, raise your hand.

Anyone?

Anyone?

Just me?

Also, yeah, I really liked that video when it first came out, though I'll admit I'm disappointed it's not viral marketing for a Half-Life movie.

Actually, I was thinking of some unnamed part of Brat Pitt's wife in Seven.

And then dick. Which was weird given my first thought, and really changed the meaning of Seven for me.

2, see 1 above.

As for me, my actual first thought was the poem by Shel Silverstein "What's in the sack?"... I must be slipping.

That was awesome. Reminds me of Escape from City-17...

Apparently they were planning on finishing Part 2 in March, but I guess stuff got in the way. Here's to hoping both of these productions make some good progress soon...

Yeah, that is great as well. The Purchase Brothers need to making the second part that they promised.

And yes 'What's in the box?" does use HL sounds, but it also uses the music from Lost. Gonna cry about it? He used them, because they best fit with this TEST movie.

Because everyone said this short movie sucked for using those noises. Every single person. They didn't just point out obvious similarities often followed by 'great movie' comments. Nope. And that's why your comments are completely warranted.
