Would you use dollar coins to save government money?

According to the article 5.8 billion over 30 years. The problem is that dollar bills are STILL being use and that is why the coins are stored and not used. To make this work, banks have to start taking away dollar bills.

But in reality this is not going to happen. Coins are hard to carry.

It's not that coins are hard to carry. It's that people hate change(not the coin change), and won't do it unless forced to. They need to just quit printing the dollar bill and be done with it.

Heh. I think that is one of the problem of our government. They say they will do one thing (using coins and mint them) but still print dollars (doing stuff the old way) and end up wasting taxpayers' money doing both all this time.

You would think piles and piles of coin in the vault would suggest that.

It's not going to happen because 'coins are hard to carry'? Uhm... At least Canada, the whole of the European Union, and I'm pretty sure Mexico all have $1/$2 coins, and somehow -perhaps we Canadians are just made of hardier stuff- we have survived.

I'm sure there are many arguments to be had over this, I don't know them, but I think 'coins are hard to carry' is basically a non-argument in light of the fact that many nations already do this and it hasn't caused them to grind to some kind of catastrophic halt.

Heh. I use to commute on the rail in Dallas (not the greatest but useful sometimes) the machine ONLY give out coins change. You should hear the complaint. It was so bad all the machine was refit to accept CC (which was silly NOT to have it in the first place and accept cash only)

Edit: Since the coin was minted, the lack of use cause huge surplus/storage of them. I remember reading an article about people hate using coin dollars in the U.S.

Dollar coins are fine. I actually like the whole Euro coin thing. Makes finding change in your pants more exciting.

I want us to switch to golden dabloons, so that when I pay for something, I can just toss a small, clinking cloth bag to the merchant, and say "I assume that should cover it."

They do little games where you try to knock a poster or something off of their cooch with a loonie here. It's really, really creepy.

The switch from bills to coins here was relatively painless. It's a very trivial adjustment.

I think so. I hardly use cash. I always use by Debit card.

If the government do want to switch, they should just stop printing dollars and just use all those coins they already minted.

Apologies in advance:

Scene: Strip Club
Hour : Toward the end of the night and most patrons are inebriated out of their minds

Customer comes up to the stage, with a pocket full of $1-2 coins, throws them at the stripper screaming "MAKE IT RAIN!!". Stripper is pelted by heavy coins and loses her balance. Bruises were visible the next day, both from the fall and from the coin barrage.

Strip bar in Calgary does this already. Girls make their way around the stage lying on their back and encourage gentlemen to throw their coins into their....target. I felt ashamed to be there; where's the classy strip bars!?!

EVERY strip club in Edmonton does this shit.

The funniest part are these crazy swinging magnets they have to pick up all the coins.

Oh please, I bet your beltbuckle weighs more than a few dollars' worth of change in your wallet :p

This message has been brought to you by Europeans with muscular thighs from lugging around coins between the value of 0.05-2€.

The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system.

90% of my transactions are with my card anyway. It would take getting used to but I'd be fine with using coins. Although usually when I use cash I'm getting a 20 from the bank to spend on a night of drinking. Unless they're going to start making 20 dollar coins I'm not sure how much I'd actually use them.

Is the dollar coin an actual proposal from the super committee? Cause if so we should just take the across the board cuts to everything cause that committee is garbage.

You know whats funny? All those "rewards" on your cards? You pay for those. They are part of the cost for every CC charge. So every reward just forces businesses to raise prices.

For the record I find dollar coins annoying but I don't carry much cash anyway so whatever. Go nuts.

I found 5 $1 coins go in my pocket better than 5 $1 bills go into my wallet. Especially after the bills have changed hands once or twice.

Trying to stuff bills into my wallet after paying for something is annoying as hell. Especially when there's a line. Much easier just throwing it in the pocket.

Philosopher B.

It'd be odd but whatever, I guess. Personally, I pay cash for everything. Also, I may or may not wear a beanie and hang out with my old high school chemistry teacher (he's been diagnosed with cancer).

But that's neither here nor there ...

I swear I'm not a drug dealer!!!

I carry "dollar" coins in China, and man, I do love them. I call em "Shrapnel", and it takes up less space in my wallet, naturally. Cash transactions are still generally the norm here, save for major purchases or (most) restaurants so I kinda like not having 10-15 1 RMB bills cluttering my wallet. Plus, there's the jingle-jangle.

#44

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

I pay for most things with my card.

But I love dollar coins. One friend was not happy she'd gotten twenty dollar coins back from a metro thing that rejected her money instead of the 20 bill she'd put in. I gave her a 20 and took the coins, and felt like a pirate with dubloons, like RavenPoe said. I'd have no problem ditching $1 bills.

#45

sixpackshaker

The last couple of times that dollar coins have been pushed out I tried using the dollar coins. My bank has the bank bags that are the size of a wallet. I'd get those and drop 5 $1 coins in it and what ever loose change in there too. It worked great, but stores did not like taking the coins because the $1 coin cup in registers are normally filled with rolled quarters...

Personally I'd like to see $500 and $1,000 bills make a comeback.

Never happen without massive inflation. They stopped printing them because it made it harder for criminals to store huge stacks of cash and forced them to ether risk buying gold (which would attract attention) or to keep it on huge pallets like the Army does in Iraq.

Unless they were buying rims\spoilers\a trunk stereo. In which case a large fan of Bennies is still more impressive than a lone bill.

That niche situation would not warrant an entire reprinting of such bills.

They might if debit card fees start going up. There are a number of people who are moralistically opposed to credit cards (like talk radio financial adviser Dave Ramsey) and they likely would spend that kind of money in cash if debit cards became a poor option.

#52

Shegokigo

Again, the ones dropping $500-$1000 straight up on a purchase? They're not going to give a shit about a $5 monthly fee to use their debit card.
