[Brazelton] Yahoo!

I hope my friend that works there has made enough money to retire.

It seems that Yahoo! made all the worst possible decisions possible for nearly a decade. They just tried alienate their customer base.

I wonder why Verizon feels that Yahoo is worth that kind of cash. Because it's really not.

They don't care about the platform and technology, though I'm sure there's a few patents that are still worth something, but like most acquisitions of this nature they are buying customers and consumers:

Though it only represents 2% of the market, 2% of the market is still hundreds of millions of individuals, and billions of page views each month. It's nothing to sneeze at.

$5 billion is a lot of sneezes.

I'd imagine their fantasy sports empire is worth something. They probably make a lot of money in their Daily Fantasy contests. Those are like printing money, and they have a very large fantasy sports userbase. For the March Madness tournament game(s), don't their numbers rival/almost surpass ESPN and CBS?

Verizon needs a better corporate image. They bought AOL, now Yahoo. Both are slight to moderate liberal bias news sources.

Verizon is buying liberal customers, and if you think 5 billion is expensive, well, clearly they disagree.

It would be interesting to go through the verizon leadership and board of directors to find out what political donations they made in the recent elections. Buying low-key liberal news media could be an interesting tactic for some people.

You know, that's a good point. I forgot about their fantasy sports. I love their platform.

I totally selfishly really hope this doesn't mess with fantasy, their layout/setups are finally rounding into what I'd call perfection, especially with their phone apps.

Well, all the tech-illiterates that I know over the age of 45 either have yahoo e-mail and/or have it as their homepage and default search engine.... so it still probably gets some traffic.

I have one only because of the whole fantasy football thing that requires you to have a Yahoo account (the only bad thing about their FF, truthfully). I POP3 it over to my Gmail. Which I suppose is like typing Google into Bing.

When I worked on a phone helpdesk for bluelight.com (K-mart's ad-supported "free" dialup ISP... how that's for dating myself), they made us use yahoo accounts for our business e-mails. I don't know if it was just that they were THAT mickey mouse or if they expected turnover to be so big that they didn't want to bother getting us in-house e-mail accounts. Either way, the place I was working went bankrupt less than a year after I quit, having seen the writing on the wall. Wasn't just the e-mail, there was other shady stuff going on, too.

I have Yahoo as my homepage, because I am a news junkie. But the last several months the news feed has really sucked. As they are just redirecting news articles now. And the communities that have formed on their forums have been under attack by the company for at least a decade. I don't use Yahoo for search, that is what the google search pane is for.

The Verizon CEO just wants the first notification of Wojbombs

I don't have it for a homepage or use it for search but I, like you, got accustomed to using the site for news. Also like you I have become increasingly annoyed at the state of said news feed. I've been searching for a good alternative but even the bbc app first provide the little gems that I didn't know I was even looking for or interested in that Yahoo does.

I also still use the mail as my primary, unless it's for work, or you really need to get a hold of me, or I really want to hear from you.....

I'm still waiting for the biggest shoe to drop.
Yahoo! is the default email portal for Ameritech/SBCGlobal/AT&T/etc. They've all been integrated for so long.
So what happens when Verizon buys AT&T's email portal? I guess we'll find out.

AFAIK, that is one of the things they bought.

I still have a Yahoo email account because it was my first one.
The only reason I still have one is because Yahoo hasn't given us an easy way to archive my emails there. I've had that since... 97? And I have a lot of things I'd actually want to keep on disk.

Right, because it was Yahoo!.
What I'm getting at is, what's going to happen now that Verizon owns AT&T's email?
I mean, I only have a Yahoo! email account to reserve the name, I don't think I check it more than once or twice a year.
