Your ACTUAL New Years Resolutions

#1

ThatNickGuy

Now that we got the joke thread out of the way, how about some actual resolutions?

Me, I just published mine on my blog. One thing I'm resolving to do is make at least one blog post per week. So that's off to a good start.

As horrifying as that image is, it's still more preferable than giving my personal info just to unlock someone else for a sucky video game.

I decided this before the new year but... even if I can't find a new job, I will work on being kinder to myself. I will make better decisions about what problems are actually my problems and what I have to let go of. I learned exactly how bad I am at taking care of myself. I ignore pain until I break down, feel hopeless, and shut out everything and everyone that makes me happy.

I'll also submit the short stories I've finished.

Get more active

Learn more about astronomy to improve my night pictures

Get at least one of the exams done for my next professional certification

Not injure myself in stupid ways because that really needs to stop

Cook more, eat out less.
Brew my own beer, of some sort.
Work on making tasty, reproducible meads.
Pay down the credit cards and the car loan.
Save money, start a retirement account.
Go through all of the boxes that we haven't unpacked in the past year, throw away the crap, repack the stuff.
Finish buying the furniture we picked out last March.
Build a curing chamber for sausages, and one for aging cheeses.

2014 was a really rough year for me.
Looking back on it, there was a lot of hardships, but out of that grows a lot of of adventures and a lot of lessons learned. Many memories and lots of silver linings to look upon.

My resolution for 2015 is to not let the hardships I've survived go to waste, not forget the lessons and things I have learned, and to make sure one year from now I can look back and say "It was better than 2014."

-> Start posting here again, on occasion.
-> Keep up having quit smoking weed. Quit the 20th of December, doing OK so far.
-> Go back to physical therapy for my back. I stopped in October and seriously need it.
-> Finally get myself to therapy.
-> Change SOMETHING about my job. I don't care anymore if I find something new, just get different hours, or what, but....Yeagh. Quite literally any change will be positive.
-> Do someting about my self-destructive behaviour. This one's going to take more than one year to work out, but still.
-> Be kinder to my girlfriend. I know she means well, even if she drives me up the wall occasionally.

Improve work performance. 2014 showed a BIG slump in both motivation and general performance. I WILL do better this year, and keep doing better. This will be the year I make detective.

I also vow to do better at showing my wife how much I love and appreciate her... while I know that she doesn't doubt it, I still want to do better. Gotten sort of... comfortable with her. Which, if movies and TV tells me anything, leads to bad ju-ju.

I know it's cliché to the point no one takes it seriously but I'm going to lose some weight. I'm 28 now and my body has let me know I can no longer eat like I'm in my first year of college. Combined with the insanely busy and insanely stressful year at work, I ate garbage food all 2014 and am now heavier than I have ever been in my entire life (195lbs).

Specifically, I am going to lose 20 lbs by May so that when I get fitted for a tux for my brother's wedding I'm back to almost where I should be. I have no year end goal for weight loss but I would like to be bench pressing my weight by the end of the year.

I have very specific rules set for my diet, and am going to be weighing in bi-weekly. This is going to suck for a few weeks but I know it's going to get better.

Manage money better.
(Clicked on this thread with my brand new $80 Logitech Proteus Core gaming mouse)

Work every day on a marketable skill. I think I've been doing a really good job of this so far; I've been making a serious effort of learning C++ and getting pretty far along learning all of the basic syntax rules (it helps that it's so similar to Javascript that my lessons from codecademy already covered a lot of the same rules I'm learning). Before long I think I'll be ready to take my school's computer science placement exam and skip over the intro classes to get a minor in computer science.

Get into a financial position to afford better apartment conditions after my lease is up this July. I miss having my own room.

Seriously cut back on procrastination. Homework gets done from now before I allow myself to watch shows, play games, or browse the internet.

Does anyone know a good iOS app that will simply track whether or not you've done a list of daily (and maybe weekly) tasks? Maybe give you stats as a bonus?

There are plenty of task list apps--even built in ones. But I would like the ability to tick them off daily and preferably track it. I know these exist but I can't remember the good ones. Google results are all over the place.

Well, I found exactly what I was looking for. Way of Life does exactly what I want. I don't like their pricing though. It's free with a 5 dollar unlock. Okay I am fine with paying for a good app, but this effectively disables the app for Family Sharing, since in-app purchases can't be shared.

#62

Reverent-one

Reverent-one

I like Habit RPG, though I use the web interface and can't speak much for the quality of the iOS app. Still, it's free (there's stuff you can buy, mostly cosmetic and otherwise non-vital stuff though). It let's you track daily, repeated, and one shot tasks, count the streaks for the daily ones (which can also be set to specific days rather than every day of the week), and if you're doing this with other people, you can form a guild and do "quests" as a group.

Meh, I'll stick with "femurs". It's accepted by the OED, the OAD, and M-W.

Things, Wunderlist, Todoist, Any.do, RTM, etc are good to-do lists, but they don't track. That's the killer feature I want. RTM was great at first, but the requirement for a recurring subscription to do what literally dozens if not hundreds of other apps do for free is not appealing.

Evidently I went a little too crazy with the healthy eating, and I've been basically anorexic for the last two weeks and didn't know it.
Girl at work kept bugging me that she didn't think I was getting enough calories, cause all I eat are raw vegetables at work. I told her at home I generally eat stir fries or pastas, so that's where all my carbs and calories are comeing from. She said that still didn't sound like enough, so I plugged my average daily diet into a calorie counter and man, she was right. I've only been consuming roughly 800 calories a day. And burning 300 of that on the exercise bike.

Basically I need to start eating nuts and fish.

So apart from going a little too crazy with the dieting, I think I've done well so far. Haven't weighed in yet, but I'm getting up each morning and doing 45 minutes on a recumbant bike. That's led to me actually having more energy in the day so I'm drinking less coffee as well. Down to 2-3 cups a day from the 4-7 I was drinking before. I've replaced most of the cheese and bread in my diet with raw vegetables, so I still have something to snack on but it isn't just made of starch and fat, and I've limited the intake of carb and protein heavy foods to only before my weight training at night, and never within 2 hours of bed. There's been one or two stumbling blocks; a buddy of mine just moved to Halifax and there was a good bye shindig, and my friend just got a job after 5 months of unemployment so there was bar food and drinks last night, but on the whole, I think I've made huge improvements.

#70

Gared

So apparently I too went a little too far with the cutting of things from my diet. It's a good thing you posted, @checkeredhat. I feel great most of the time, but I've actually cut a bit too much sugar out of my diet, and it's been causing minor panic attacks. But, just to sum up, I quit smoking 17 days ago and have had 2 cigarettes since (and I'm even off the patches now); I've also cut (a bit too much it appears) sugar from my diet, added fiber (in the forms of whole grains, legumes, and benefiber), increased my water intake, and even added some seafood into my diet.

The biggest drawback I've seen so far is that I'm exceptionally sensitive to fragrances now. My wife was eating some Hi-Chew in the car last weekend and I nearly drove off the road because it smelled so much.

#71

Dei

I would never try healthy eating for the first time without a calorie counter, just because you aren't used to what you can get away with eating yet. After a couple of months you may end up not needing it anymore, but starting with it is never a bad idea.

#72

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

Bi-weekly weigh-in: Down 6.4 lbs.
A little bit more than the healthy maximum for that time period, but that's not surprising considering I had been consuming way fewer calories a day than I needed for the first week and a bit. Since I added cashews, fish and chicken into the mix with all my raw veggies, I've slowed that down I think.
Need to get better at keeping up with the weight training at night though; only managed two of those last week.

#73

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

4 week weight in: down a total of 8.2 lbs so far, which is only a little over 1lb since two weeks ago. I'm not too worried about that; I've stepped up the weight training and I expect the muscle gaining to slow the fat loss some.

Still making progress, but still lots of work to go.

Good to see somebody else is keeping up with it. Most of my friends made similar fitness resolutions this year and we created a google doc to track our fat/fit days. I'm the only one actually updating it though.

I'm failing miserably at updating Fade. I'm really trying, but I've been working until like 9pm. Believe it or not, this oil price drop is good for consulting companies like ours. We gain work, because people want to do more with that expensive data they've already collected.

#77

checkeredhat

checkeredhat

I neglected to do my bi-weekly weigh in this past week because things have been CRAZY at work. I've also not worked out in two weeks for the same reason. I'm pulling 11+ hour days at work. I've had to get a $50 cab ride home from work at 5:40am just so I'd have time to shower, change and get back to work for 9am.

But, I have my obligations, and weight updates is one of them, so my belated bi-weekly weigh in was performed today. Down another 1.4 lbs. That's 9.6 lbs since the start.

Given that I have hardly worked out over the past week, I probably have this past Friday's bout of food poisoning to thank for the 1.4 lbs.

Things at work should be finally easing up this week, and then I'm back at this hard. Still well on track to reach my goal. Two more months to lose just 10.4 lbs.

#78

Squidleybits

Squidleybits

This wasn't one of my official resolutions from the first page, but I am trying to drink more tea and drink less coffee, beer and diet coke. I would drink huge, massive, full of caffeine Tim's coffees all the time and order assorted badness to eat with them. I started up with the David's Tea five weeks ago and haven't had a coffee since. I still have diet coke, but only a few a day instead of an embarrassing amount.

#79

Gared

Gared

It's been 58 days since I quit smoking - long enough that it's now easy to avoid smoking, and no longer a chore that I have to keep up with. I've also maintained my giving up of excess sugar. That one is less easy to avoid. I really miss chocolate. The drawback being that I also had to be put on Zoloft to control the unreasoning panic that I've been living with since I gave up sugar, and which escalated when I quit smoking (and when I had a nervous breakdown on Superbowl Sunday).

#80
