I just ordered a Wii-U copy from Amazon and it's arriving tomorrow.

Big fan of the Prime 20% discount on new games.

#2

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Yeah, I'm a big fan of getting to enjoy the same game without plunking down a ton for this new console.

Except I spent my spending money on Hearthstone cards and trade paperbacks because I figured I was going to be playing WoW this whole month and now that's turned out to be a disappointment, so I really wish I'd squirreled some away for new Zelda. I can probably convince my wife to let me cheat this month since she did with buying WoW: Legion, but I'm supposed to be our impulse control.

EDIT: If I do this, I'll probably just buy it digitally since places are likely sold out.

A little annoyed that there's a season pass for a Nintendo game, but they're getting with the times so I guess I can't blame them.

Bleh, I caved. It'll be finished downloading by the time I get home from work.

My order still days shipping soon. I preordered in January. So it's either just STUCK, or they could just tell me it's delayed so I can cancel my order and just download it. Pick one already Amazon!

You could cancel it anyway.

Amazon says they're sold out on Wii U copies, so there's a possibility they ran out of stock but kept taking pre-orders because even they can't guess what Nintendo is going to do.

US Amazon is having supply issues with the games. Isn't surprising, since Nintendo and Amazon have such a shaky relationship.

Canada Amazon has apparently, enough for all.

OOOOOOOOOOOH BOOO. I just checked the tracking, apparently Canada Post has changed the time for delivery from today to Monday. Damn you Canada Post.

Zelda in five hours.

#8

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

Two hours.

This is assuming the Wii U will have downloaded 10 gigs since I left the apartment. It was crawling while the system was on, much slower than even my handhelds download things, but I'm hoping.

#9

Terrik

Terrik

I'm about 4 hours in to Zelda and the switch. Have to say, I'm pleased. I'm a huge Zelda fan, so I'm biased, but I feel like the game was worth the price of admission. Remember when I bought the Wii U, then a couple days later returned it and got a PS4? I feel the complete opposite of that this time around. Its a joy to play. Lets see if I feel the same 30 hours in.

#10

Hailey Knight

The Wii U apparently decided to give up downloading shortly after I left for work.

It's now crawling along from 2% downloaded.

Bokoblin knocked me down and stole my weapon and chased me up a hill. I beat him with a stick. Later I realized I could steal their weapons too, so I did, and stole and ate their food too. Climbed around a temple roof, fell down, burned myself to death trying to cook apples on an open fire. Later stumbled upon a wild boss by accident.

I'm lovin it. Can't believe how pretty the game is.

I'm going to have to hike my ass back to the old man's cooking pot because I'm freezing trying to ascend Mt. Hylia without warning food.

A lot of what I'm hearing about the Switch makes me apprehensive. This is Nintendo's first foray into certain modern gaming elements and they're going to screw up some things.

You don't need warming food necessarily. I don't have the game myself but saw some Let's Plays and people found other ways to warm themselves.

There are campfires dotting the way, but the Bokoblins are parked around each of them. Some of these idiots throw exploding barrels at you, even if you're near an open fire. I've seen one of these assholes kill his friends with one, trying to get at me. Their society knows neither loyalty nor compassion.

There is a quest for a certain item of clothing you can get that (other folks have referenced it in this thread) that obviates the need for warming food (at least on Mt. Hylia). Look around for the old man's hut.

If you miss it before the "reveal" of the old man's identity, there's a chest in that house that contains the tunic in question. It only appears after the reveal, as you couldn't complete the quest after that point as the guy is then gone.

Honestly, I'd rather they leave it as 32GB and include the expansion port (which they did) so I can buy another 64GB (or much much more) for a reasonable price, rather than adding hundreds of dollars to the price for the 64GB option as so many phones/tablets do.

#43

Far

Save information apparently can only be stored on that system memory though. 32 is not enough if you aren't going to allow other options.

In regards to saving the actual game on the system instead of carrying around the cartridge, apparently there is a Dragon Quest game announced for Japan that already will not fit on the thing without external storage. I love Nintendo and it's stuff but that's just disappointing.

#44

Frank

Frank

That's all well and good for the Switch, but that's fucking insane that they did it with the Wii-U.

32 gigs that was filled when I bought my model because it came preloaded with Smash Bros and Splatoon. I had 4 gigs left. Add in some save and updates and I literally had to delete Smash Bros in order to play Zelda.

#45

So I'm really starting to make some progress on Zelda, but my daughter went to start a game of her own and it had issues when she first set it up and she had to restart after about 30 minutes because it wasn't giving her any quests to complete.

ZELDA GOOD!

I like when Zelda swings the swords at the goblin boys. I don't like it when Zelda's sword breaks after like 5 uses.

I almost killed that huge rock guy in the starting area when I first found him, then he sort of shrugged and I was instagibbed. Poor Zelda didn't stand a chance.

#53

I was in Hyrule Field using the magnet to move giant metal blocks to cross the river when I was shot at by Bokoblins. So I swung the metal block over to their tree fort and started mashing them with it :D my tree fort now, mother fuckers!

I also went toward the castle WAAAY too early just to get the area map. Dodging those laser spiders just to get there, and then ducking and dodging their lasers while climbing the tower is the most harried I've felt in a Zelda game since I was a kid and the nighttime skeletons in Ocarina were an actual threat.

I just lost my first significant amount of progress.

Eventide Island. It doesn't autosave there, so I lost an hour or so, about 20 new compendium entries and a tough battle. When the game has been so good about autosaves to suddenly stop for a tough area hurts.[DOUBLEPOST=1488955525,1488955401][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, the music is very sparse and kind of weak so far.

I did that. Died about 3 times going up, but was able to do it without faeries or anything (only 4 hearts!). Was thrilling though. I also liked the multi-part shrine to the SW of there. Nice set of challenges.

FYI the next place to locate the maracas of awesomeness is the hyrule field stable, right by the river. Allowed 4-5 upgrades that next time, which is awesome.

Not sure where the guy is next, but I'm also out of seeds, so it's OK for now.

Speaking of the trip to my second Divine Beast...

Fuck Escort Quests.

#71

Eriol

Eriol

Fuck Escort Quests.
In every game ever. Unless they're literally invincible, then it's SOMEWHAT tolerable. In all other cases, "Go sit in this armored box. I'll kill everything between where we are, and where we need to go, and then I'll be back for you." And even then it can get fucked up.

The most egregious example was the "escort" quest in Oblivion where you needed to "teach" the local gang (noble's son and his gang) how to close an Oblivion Gate. Because of their tendancy to hit monsters off of bridges into lava and then follow them into the lava I resorted to console commands to just kill everything that spawned as soon as it did, or else they'd continually kill themselves.

#72

Dei

Dei

This one is less "keep him alive" and more "keep him from blundering into something that will kill you both."

#73

GasBandit

GasBandit

I know Bioshock 2 was one never-ending escort quest, but I really liked being a big daddy, and being able to set traps and stuff for the splicers that were gonna come after my little sister.

#74

Frank

Frank

I should do some main quests instead of dicking around so much. I hadn't even found the big fairy shrine until just recently. NOW, I'm like 2000% more survivable. No more losing like 5 hearts from every enemy that sneezes at me. Life is better.

So far the worst of it for me is Kakariko village. Really chugs there.

#80

Dei

I also randomly have problems with controller sensitivity going haywire. I thought it might have been the gamepad so I swapped to the pro controller and it's better, but it still randomly has the problem. I wish I had waited for the Switch version in a way. I *could* still get it, but I have way too many hours sunk into this game to be willing to start over. I'll probably just get the Switch version next time I feel like starting a new playthrough.

In other news, I have defeated my second Divine Beast, found my third great fairy, and am at 11 hearts. I'm currently shrine hunting to try to get those last two hearts I need to pull the Master Sword before I go for my 3rd Divine Beast. I could have it already, but I got three very needed stamina upgrades before I realized I needed hearts for the Master Sword.

It really depends on how you want to qualify "beating" the game. In this scenario, the majority of the game is unplayed.

To put it into perspective, I had hundreds of hours of play time in Morrowind, a game which can be "beaten" in literally 15 minutes

It's still beating it since you reach the end, but it's missing the point.

But the speedrun community has their own strange sub-culture and rules in gaming that seems focused on a lot of shit that's really not important, at least to me. Half-A press and that kind of nonsense.

Aside from the stick thing, yeah, that's pretty much what this run did. No clothing, and only three hearts, but he did pick up shields and weapons along the path to Ganon, most of which broke at some point during the fight.

Speaking of the final fight with Ganon:

I was getting some serious Dark Souls vibes from his final form.

Though I made the trek to Zora's Domain yesterday, I decided to head back from one stable in hope of finding Hatenko, which worked out mostly well. Did some stuff with that, but then I went to do a sidequest and got side-track. Ended up making and hopping ice pillars across a bay to reach a shrine on an island, where it was a trial of strength, robot version IV I think? Anyway, my equipment was absolute shit compared to his, but after figuring out the dodge stuff again and wearing down all my shields and most of my weapons, I was able to get him.

Now I'm in well-earned climbing gear and my only non-guardian weapon is a farmer's hoe, but it was all worth it.

I'm at 17.5 hours. I don't expect to have this game beat for a long while since I'm not playing it daily, and I'll sure to be taking a break when Dark Souls 3 DLC drops, and then late Christmas present from my aunts a week later, Persona 5.

One divine beast "liberated" now. I have no idea which to go to next though, as when I got the Death Mountain tower earlier, jumping off almost-immediately got me the "hot area" problem, so I don't think I'll return there right now, as beyond potions/food (which can run out) I don't have any anti-hot clothing. Also there's a guardian on the road, and considering those guys are still near-instant death (when do they become "not" that btw?) I think I shouldn't go that way. I'll probably just do a bunch of sidequests in Zora's Domain and such, get more shrines, etc. Generally wander about.

Anybody know where to get "the other two" parts of the Zora Armour? I remember somebody (in-game) mentioned in passing the helmet was somewhere around Zora's domain (hell if I remember where), but pants/flippers would be nice too.

I dunno if other people have had the same experience, but I found that if I load up on a 3x defense meal beforehand, even the "major" guardians in the trials and most mini-bosses in the overland do very little damage (haven't gotten shot by an overland guardian yet under that circumstance), so I can keep my meaner 2H weapons at the ready the whole time. Then if they finally chip away my health to the danger zone, I usually pop a full-hearts + extra hearts meal, and I'm good to go (plus, I make sure to always run with 4 fairies).

(and I don't do bosses while the Zora Champ skill is on CD)

Anybody know where to get "the other two" parts of the Zora Armour? I remember somebody (in-game) mentioned in passing the helmet was somewhere around Zora's domain (hell if I remember where), but pants/flippers would be nice too.
If you turn left at the top of the area where you turn right to get to the Red Lynel (at the top of the three waterfalls), you get to a small lake with some ruins in it, the helm is in a chest under the water.

The legs come from the quest to take a picture of the Red Lynel and bring it back to one of the Zora that you run into on your way out of town. If you killed it already, I would just wait for a Blood Moon to respawn it.

I got all four beasts and all the memory spots, then went and killed Ganon last night. I still have lots of random stuff to do, but after ~70 hours I felt like making a run at the ending. I found it very short and unsatisfying, but at least I'm having fun with the rest of the game.

Re: Death Mountain.
You can sneak around the lone guardian on the road there. You will need to food/potion your way up, because flame resist gear (NOT heat resist) isn't available until you get to Goron City.

As for Overworld Guardians
Once you find the Ancient Akala Tech Lab run by Robbie you can start killing guardians fairly easily. Guardian Arrows in particular will let you one shot them if you hit them in the eye as they are aiming at you.

#116

Eriol

I "withdrew" from the Akala region (at least I think that's where it is in the North-East) because I saw flying guardians around the tower, and was scared.

Thanks for all the advice though. I appreciate it.

I don't know if that's the one he's talking about. There's at least one I can think of that is blatantly mini golf, putter and all.

#121

Hailey Knight

Hailey Knight

For the tilting pad maze, you can sit the end of it against where the ball comes out, then swing it to where it's supposed to go. Completely circumvent the maze.

For the one where you need to swing your hammer like a crochet mallet against the time-frozen ball to hit it across the water, into the hole there, that one just sucks. You have to hit it in a straight line, nothing less.

That isn't even the worst tilt table puzzle. There's one that is FAAAAAAAAR more annoying. But it couldn't be called a mini golf puzzle, so I know that isn't the one being talked about. :)

For the putter one, I set the game pad on a flat surface, hit the button to start it, then just picked up one end and set it back down.

What Dei said. Just point the "end" of the maze upward where the ball comes out if you dropped it, and then you're practically done at the beginning.

I did not take into account fire would have any environment impact until I was stuck in a field of dry grass while bokoblins chased me with blazing torches

Also, I said it before and I'll say it again THIS GAME SO GODDAMN BIG. I went up that mountain behind Zora's Domain, and was just like ... vast countryside sprawling to the coast, and then all the way to the volcano. And that's all just in the upper northeast section of the game. I have yet to set foot in the north, west, or south. It's just mind-boggling.

I'm finally in the water dungeon, but it was too late at night when I got there to really see what it was about. It feels weird getting to a dungeon after all the open world stuff. And here I was worried Nintendo wouldn't know how to do an enjoyable open world; never thought I'd be perfectly fine playing a Zelda game for over 20 hours before reaching a dungeon. The mini-dungeon shrines help though.

It does feel a lot like that, although in Shadow of the Colossus, while Aggro would fight you a lot, it was pretty clear this was Aggro being too big a horse for Wander. When push came to shove, Aggro would do what you needed her to do, like the few colossi that were best attacked on horseback. The horses in Breath of the Wild will give you shit until you earn their love, then be easy to coast. I hold forward on my new horse and it works out fine because we have MAX BOND.

Disk? Since when did it come on a hard disk drive? Or do you mean a Digital Video Disc? The latter is (essentially) what WiiU games were I thought, or are they a blu-ray variant?

Yes I'm being pedantic. It's always annoyed me how people screw those two spellings up, though I'm willing to bet that there is no reason for a difference historically, that somebody misspelled one of them officially, and then ran with it forevermore. That Lynel was what finally taught me how to backflip/flurry strike properly. The shrine where it teaches you before was useless. Also if you can peg him in the eyes with an arrow and stun him, jump on his back the same as with horses and you can just wail away at him until your stamina runs out.

Ending fight and ending spoilers:
Next-to-requiring perfect guards to kill Ganon isn't fair to those who can't do them reliably. There should have been another method of getting his "shield" down like there was for the fire boss or the thunder boss. Perfect guarding the laser is not an easy thing by a long shot. Given that the ONLY other way to do it (that I've seen online, and did once myself) is Urbosa's Fury, that's just nuts. Perfect parry is something that @Dirona didn't even know EXISTED (she forgot that she did the training shrine in Kakariko because it was so long ago) and given the number of tough mobs with two-handers that it seems "iffy" to use it with (Lynels) it doesn't seem reasonable to me to require it against the end boss when Perfect Dodge was your "go-to" against mobs like that the whole rest of the game. They should have allowed a perfect dodge/flurry strike when dodging something else to have a brief "shields down" moment or SOMETHING else (like ancient arrow to the eye) to bring the shield down. Or maybe when he throws the spear at you, you can pick it up and throw it back to penetrate the shield! That would have been good. Bad boss design there IMO making it so non-obvious what to do.

Beast Ganon was fine, though non-challenging IMO. My biggest enemy in that sequence was the trees. I think they're there only to screw up your horse.

And for the ending yourself when you've won... WTH? After a massively expansive game, you get an ending that is just kinda... you're done? That's IT??? I know most of the game should be about the game not the ending, however, MORE!!! It's just you and Zelda on a cliff saying about how you have to rebuild now. And... nothing. They could EASILY have had the game continue after that point, rather than "warping" you back to the moment before killing Ganon, and leave Zelda in the game as a consultant, source of additional "rebuilding" quests, etc. But they didn't do that, and thus the ending feels kinda "OK... all that for not a lot?" Even a summary of what's happening (based on quest flags) to the various parts of Hyrule would be great. Celebrations in Tarry Town, Kakariko, or wherever, ala A Link to the Past, and/or OOT.

Taking the idea further of Zelda as a consultant, a great path to go down would have been "cleansing" the land. One tower region at a time, have quests to permanently disable the Blood Moon for that area. So once you've cleared the monsters, they're gone. And/or rebuilding quests (especially for the castle & surrounding areas) would have worked. Making it clear that a hero is still useful after Ganon is dead.

I still enjoyed (and am still enjoying) the game, but still, not nearly as strong an ending and/or postlude as the game deserves.
Still, extremely fun game. Don't let my previous comments put you off if you're not playing it yet. GET THIS GAME.

So, most of the first set of DLC came out a week or two ago, and I just bought it and have tried it out a little. I've beaten the main game on normal and figured I could finish exploring on Master Mode if I decide to stick with it. It's definitely hard mode alright, all enemies have been upgraded to the next step (red to blue to black), with some of the mini-bosses added to new areas (like a Lynel in the middle of the Great Plateau, whew). And on top of that, all enemies will regen health over time if you stop damaging them. While the stronger attacks mean that every fight can turn badly really fast, the enemies all having more health means the early weapons you have start breaking really fast. On the plus side, there are extra treasure chests with some nice gear that help make up for that.

If you're at that early point in the game, even stationary Guardians are considered "yikes!" then. So even getting to the ancient tech lab is not necessarily the easiest thing.

Later on, obviously not, but you have to remember how damned DANGEROUS the game was early-on.

I wouldn't agree with that. I'd say the Camel/Desert/Thunder one was harder. I didn't have any problems dealing with the ice from the zora one, but if you had problems targeting the crap it was sending, I can see it being rough.

Then again, the Death Mountain one I basically "zapped" most of the way through via master sword beam, and the air one I didn't have any massive problems. But the "use spikes to lightning the guy" mechanic on the thunder one sucked IMO.

...Wow, I just remembered that was a thing, I've played most of the game totally forgetting it could do that. Granted, I generally played it with the mindset of something like "Do I more hearts than I can count on one hand (and this isn't a boss)? It requires you to not assume combat is trivial, which can take some getting used to if you're used to just destroying everything in past zelda games. Once you get a handle on the combat it's not that hard, though.

When the final DLC came out, I picked it back up... and was promptly getting pwned by everything. I decided to start anew, which worked, and went through the whole thing. Was fun the 2nd time too.

"Pro" tip: Don't wait to go to Hyrule Castle until the end of the game. There's some really great loot in there (royal guard weapons) that's useful in the harder areas like Gerudo Highlands and Hebra. The main thing is you have to know how to either fight, or avoid stationary guardians. Once you can do that, you're good for exploring most of it, since you can do most of the interior without fighting those.

Also, one tip above all other: UPGRADE YOUR ARMOUR. Get to be those faeries' best friend. Each point of defense is literally one-quarter less damage you take from every hit from everything (except lynel explosions, which pierce armor.. either that or those explosions are nuts), minimum 1/4 heart damage. So an armor rating of 10 means each hit from a weapon of 10 or under does 1/4 heart only. A weapon which does 20 (5 full hearts) would only do 2.5 hearts damage per hit to you. By endgame your rating can be in the 80s, but it makes a HUGE difference to survivability.
