Actually, my contention is that it is a worse joke and therefore hurts popularity. Popularity is an affected variable rather than the defining characteristic.
I agree that it may hurt popularity, but I disagree that it is worse. Maybe there could be better single-serving-punchlines than this particular arc punchline, but good punchlines of any sort are rather rare on PVP, and at least the writing of this arc, and this joke, indicate a coherent grasp of storytelling.

I agree. I'm differentiating the joke from the storytelling in this case.

First, we get on him for telling bad jokes. Now we get on him for going for a multi-strip punchline?

WTF do you guys want? GARFIELD????

You know when comedians do callbacks to earlier parts of their bit? I hate that. Their jokes should stand on their own, someone just tuning in wouldn't understand the joke.

In fact, what if they miss the setup of a punchline? Punchlines should stand on their own, one-liners only from now on.

Do you only watch comedians that do 1 minute routines or something?

I'm not going to bust Scott for doing a multi-strip arc. I'm actually surprised it has gone on for this long. Hopefully it means there won't be time for a Kringus arc this Christmas.

I just don't like the current subject matter; playing Peeping Tom via CCTV.

I know this is technically not the right thread, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Oneo f the things I dislike about The Trenches are the butt-ugly characters. The noses. Ew. Now, I know that's been attributed to Scott at least once...But go look at the latest Penny Arcades. Now, if you really want to, go back to the PA archives from around the time Trenches was started. The noses came from PA. I don't get that at all. Gabe can do so much better.

See, I liked today's as well, even though it doesn't "stand alone" without back story. I love the fact that they are treating the cleaning staff as reality show stars![DOUBLEPOST=1355432684][/DOUBLEPOST]They've even named the show!!

It's fine as a story (although it seems to be extending a concluded arc...?) and it is better than yesterday's as a joke but only because he refers to "closed-circuit television" so you can kind of guess that they are peeping on her.

He says as his remains un-updated for the day.
He really should just make it official that this is going to be a Monday through Thursday comic, since he always seems to have trouble updating at a decent time on Friday, then comes on to say that he's been suuuuuuper swamped all day and just hasn't had time to update, and would the fans mind terribly if he didn't update today?

Honestly, I think this has been a pretty good arc. No stupid random silhouette panels, no obnoxious extra characters, just the main cast acting like themselves in a wacky situation. It's a nice taste of classic PVP and a reminder of why we all started reading the strip. Credit where credit is due. And I thought the joke about AMC wasn't bad.

I can't wait for the whole maintenance staff to quit or strike.
No, I bet they were doing the same thing with the Brent, Jade, Francis, and Marci. If they quit, it's only going to be because their show started to suck now that no one was having office fun.

Then again, that's far too clever for Scott. He'll drop it long before it gets that far.

I thought it was pretty funny. Unexpected.[DOUBLEPOST=1355880518][/DOUBLEPOST]Also you can't be a tenth of something. Breeding doesn't work that way.
