Minor victory thread

Starting to plan now for a June vacation. First idea, train to NYC. Just because.

Then I check fares. Round trip from Pittsburgh to NYC.

Flight: ~$240
Amtrak: $129

Flights are to either JFK or LaGuardia. Train lets out at Penn Station. Which is right underneath Madison Square Garden. Saves a bundle on cab fare to hotel there. :)

Next trick will be to find a hotel that till honor the employee rate on the dates I want. Then I can begin to plan what to do once I'm there.

See, the problem with that is, DA, that you live in Amtrak's main corridor of service.

You know where my nearest Amtrak station is located? TOMAH. Which is 91 miles away.

That Pittsburgh station? 75 miles from my house. Morgantown hasn't had passenger train service since the 1950s.

Yet our state governors continue to claim we don't need high speed rail.

Today is my wife's 40th birthday. I got her a nice ring, but I'm making her work for it. We just moved here, so all her friends are out of state. In lieu of getting them all here, they are all participating in a game. I have hidden 12 slips of paper, each with a part of a final puzzle and contact information for one of her friends. Each friend gives her a puzzle that she has to solve to find the next piece.

I think that describes pretty much 80% of the USA.
This reminds me of a discussion I had in an ecology class I took several years ago. We were talking about using mass transit and I said it wasn't practical in many places. We were living in Chula Vista, CA, which has its own mass transit system, so I used my husband's drive to work as an example. Barring accidents or other traffic obstructions it would take him 15 to 20 minutes to get from our house to NAS North Island. If he had used mass transit, he would have walked over a mile to the bus stop, wait for the buses to start running at 5:20am, then take a trolley and two more buses for a total roundtrip of 2.5 hours and making him late for work despite leaving earlier than if he drove.

That's pretty common around here too. If I wanted to take the bus to work (the regular regional mass transit, not the Microsoft FTE only bus system that I don't have access to because I'm not an FTE), I'd have to leave an hour earlier and ride the bus for 2.5 hours each direction, and pay $11+ per day. The Portland, OR area is the only area I know of on this side of the country that has an efficient mass transit system. Their train/bus combo is awesome.

$11 for a ride? Jeez... it's only like $4.50 here for a day pass. My problem is that the closest bus stop is a 3 mile walk down a stretch of road infamous for the amount of car wrecks and pedestrian deaths it has every year.

I think last time I worked it out the cost came to $5.75 for the morning commute and $5.25 for the evening commute. Transfer passes only last for an hour after you get off the first bus you use, where you pay, so I'd have to pay for each leg. A lot of companies around here offer subsidies for bus fare, but my contracting company doesn't.

She finished! She got hung up on the final riddle. Well one line, anyway. But it was a fun full day adventure.

I made Chinese dumplings today with my niece. It was so much fun. :) And my younger niece is waving, clapping, and starting to talk. Nice day catching up with the little ones!

Making chili in the crockpot you guys gave me. It smells delicious, but it wont' be done for hours. Not sure if it'll be done by dinner. Oh well, definitely lunch tomorrow.

Who relies on mobile broadband internet, and lives in an area that just today got upgraded to 4G LTE speed?

THIS GUY!

I went from roughly 1.5mbps down (and who the fuck knows up) to 20mbps down and 5mbps up.

Best part about 4g is not getting disconnected or having the internet hang every damn time you get a text message.

Oh, and I'm not an employee and I get unlimited. I can never upgrade my phone though...

I'm using an HTC Thunderbolt, one of the few phones with dual radios, so I was able to recieve texts and phonecalls without ever interrupting internet connection.

I'm in the same boat as you with phones though. It's all full price for me :(

I submitted my honours thesis for my Master's degree this morning. (The program is technically course-based, so no thesis necessary, unless you want the Hons. designation)

Why only a minor victory? It's only the first draft, so now I have to edit (oh god), and it's 12 days after my (admittedly self-imposed) deadline.

But, it is written, so woooo!
Also, worst vacation ever.

I've had similar issues with WinWebkit, but opposite. It's like the longer I surf, the slower it gets. It's gotten so bad that lately I've been using Opera.

Thinking I'm going to try to lure back a few old time posters - not the most recent exiles, but a few from waaaaay back. Right now I'm working on an artist who was known for clean lineart and muscular women, and another known for sharks. Fingers crossed.

I know who you mean for at least one of those two. You have my endorsement. It's high time that one showed back up around here.
