Video Game News and Miscellany

So, what? It's Farmville: Firefly Edition? FUCK THAT.

That's the general sentiment on fan pages all over. It seems they ha to do something with the IP to retain the rights. Rather than do something positive, they thought "hey, let's try and bleed some money from a bunch of suckers! Phone games make money, right?"

Well, Cave Story is gone. I still have keys for Binding of Isaac and Legend of Grimlock.

EDIT: Now it's just Binding of Isaac.

Summer Games Done Quick 2013 is going on now. Livestream of games being speedrun, collecting money for charity. Right now is a run of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the runner is wearing sunglasses while playing, because damn that game loves to flash bright white screens at the player.

Tons of great games still left on the schedule for the weekend. I wish Secret of Evermore wasn't set for 7AM on Sunday.

So Phil Fish, creator of Fez and general internet asshole (love him for it), has decided to leave the games industry today amidst a torrent of abuse sparked by Annoyed Gamer and general internet asshole, Marcus Beer. Beer was pissy that Phil Fish and Jonathan Blow wouldn't comment on some news rumour about Xbox's indie policy change and decided to record some video tearing them a new one for not playing ball with journalists. This sparked general internet assholes into action sending wave after wave of vile shit Fish's way and prompting him to cancel Fez 2 and abandon the industry entirely.

This is the kind of shit that has been posted to Polytron's (Phil Fish's) website comments.

This God awful industry is what gamers (super generalization) deserve.

This. He's been creating drama since Day 1 and I can't seem to give a fuck about him leaving the industry after releasing a single decent game.
What you should give a fuck about is that the sea of assholes on the internet chased away a game designer because they don't like him. Next time it happens, it might be a designer/author/artist you like. And unless we as a culture work to change this, I guarantee that will happen.

Here is a good read regarding this whole mess over on PAR.

I don't dispute that he's a giant asshole. He really is. But online bullying of people in the game industry is just fucking RIDICULOUS. That's my larger point. The moment you say he deserves all the vitriol because he's an asshole is the moment you encourage people to keep doing this. And it will keep getting worse.

Bidding on Atlus began Sunday.

I'm so nervous, and then trolls post rumors that Microsoft is making a bid to try edging their way into the eastern market.

Come on, Nintendo, you wanna keep making that SMT/Fire Emblem crossover.

"He deserves bullying, because he's an asshole."
"She deserves rape because she's a slut."
"He deserves being robbed because he's rich."

You're reading things into that post that aren't even close to there.
I'm not reading anything into anything. I'm not saying a) that's his point or b) he's making something like that or whatever. I'm saying people saying he "deserves" bullying because he's an asshole (NOT TRESS OR YOU) remind me of people saying someone "deserves" rape for being a slut (or dressing like one, or whatever).

Here's a hint: unless you're talking about self-defense, there's no reason anyone deserves anything bad you do to them. Don't be an asshole to people "because they deserve it" - be it in small matters, over medium-serious things, all the way to the big leagues. It's an excuse used to behave like an asshole and get away with it, and the world would be a better place if people stopped accepting "they deserved it" or "they had it coming" as a reason/excuse. If it's something that tickles your fancy, I'll more than happy to include "He deserved being beaten up because he's gay" in there as well - it's the exact same argument.

Christ, about time they announced something. I'll admit, I wanted Columbia fleshed out more, but pre-collapse Rapture is definitely a rad consolation.

Maybe that seasons (first and last one I'll ever purchase) pass won't be a waste after all.

This is the first time I got a season pass where I was starting to feel like I gave them money for nothing. I've only gotten about 3 and they all had DLC almost immediately. That being said...

OMFG I WANT THIS NOW.

Jim Sterling knocks it out of the park again with his little commentary on Fee to Pay.

Well, I think we all knew we'd be waiting a while, just didn't expect the time to pass with total radio silence from Irrational.
Quit equating DLC expansions to F2P models being implemented in paid games. I'm sick to death of seeing that done. They are completely different animals.

I wasn't comparing the Bioshock DLC to the F2P thing. That was literally meant to be a separate item in this thread not related to the Bioshock DLC announcement. Just another bit of video game news and miscellany.

About the only game that has done Fee-to-Play right is The Secret World. You buy the game and get all content made before Jan 2013 for free (plus the free issues) plus a free month of premium, and then you only have to buy the small $10 expansions if you want some very fun extra missions and maybe some clothes/pets if you want them. The game isn't expecting you to buy the faster XP gain items or anything.

I'm glad they gave us everything they had when the game came out. This is how DLC should work.

That said, I was also starting to wonder when we'd someday hear something.

League of Legends and DCUO have great F2P models.[DOUBLEPOST=1375236817][/DOUBLEPOST]

The other games I got season passes for did give everything when they came out, but their DLC was at least announced fairly quickly, for example Borderlands 2. They at least assured you that new content was coming. With Bioshock Infinite, I was literally starting to wonder if the DLC was ever even coming out.

I'm not familiar with DCUO's model, but League of Legends is Free-to-Play (and it is indeed done well), while the discussion Bowie was talking about is Fee-to-Play (where you buy the game at retail, and then have further microtransactions inside).
