Video Game News and Miscellany

This just reminds of how when I was a kid, my brother was the one who got video game consoles as a kid even though I was the one who used them. I don't know *why* it made me think of that. This only changed once I was sent to the store to buy myself what I wanted for Christmas and I came home with a Playstation and FF7. The only thing I ever played on the Dreamcast was Crazy Taxi though.
You missed out on the hands down best version of SoulCalibur.

Oh damn. Ubisoft is getting warp speed taking down those South Park Stick of Truth gameplay videos from Pax.

It was Stick of Truth. It looks fantastic.

I feel ya, Dei! I'm guessing the same year was that same magical Christmas for me--Playstation + Final Fantasy VII. I was so happy.

On the 2DS, my only complaint with that is that it doesn't fold. Even the Gameboy Advance evolved to a version that folded and it didn't even have two screens. But other than that, it makes sense. I only ever use the 3D during Fire Emblem because for the most part that game sits still and any game where I need to move a ton is going to make the 3D blurry. Plus, kids 6 and under aren't supposed to use the 3D, so removing the function is a good idea for them.

I never cared much about the 3D aspect of the 3DS (in fact having it on more than an hour or so makes my eyes hurt), so when I first heard of the 2DS I was kind of intrigued.

Then I saw what it looks like.

I am no longer intrigued.

So they're making another Tex Murphy game.

I was a fan of Under a Killing Moon back in the day, and I got but never finished Pandora Directive. I dunno if I'm looking forward to this or not - let me tell you, UKM did NOT age well (heh and from the video, it looks like the decades haven't exactly been overly kind to Tex himself either). And they're still going with the FMV galore stuff it seems. I remember there was even one part in UKM that you had to find a key under a coffee table on a rug that was basically patterned gold and colored splotches, so you just had to get lucky to a pixel-perfect degree to find the key. That took me HOURS of hunting for that damn key.

Ahem. Anyway...

Like I said, I do have some fond rememberances of past Tex Murphy games... but I don't know if the exact same formula will work today - especially if it's on a kickstarted budget.

No mandatory online, 4 player local coop, fixed more satisfying loot system, no AH.

Diablo 3 on consoles is a superior game to the PC version.

Fuck.

Indeed. Don't intend to play it again, though, the story was way too stupid for that to be worthwhile. Perhaps if everyone is ecstatic about the new loot system I'll give the expansion a chance, but I doubt it. Any new loot system that'll be good for the AH and high-difficulty players grinding their way up, will most likely be horrible for people wanting to play alone.

I'd say the ending was too stupid (instead of the story) to be worthwhile and the new xpac is looking to correct most of that.

For kids, it's probably better to not have a hinge. It's just another thing to break, and it probably reduces the price. What's weird is that it's not two screens, but one big one with plastic covering it to make it look like two. It would have been awesome if they left it as one big screen. Separate it with a black bar for games, and let you hold it sideways full screen for watching netflix/movies. I can't believe they just covered it with plastic.

Are you sure? It would be cheaper to make two screens than one big one...
It's being debated, no one knows for sure yet as no one actually has one to check. I think some tech site suggested it as a possibility.

If it was 99 dollars instead of 129, I'd probably get one just to play the couple of 3DS games that interest me.

Apparently it's cheaper to add one bigger screen than two smaller ones. http://www.usgamer.net/articles/oh-so-thats-nintendos-next-move
Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it. While this makes no difference for the system's normal functions -- after all, neither the system's firmware or its software would recognize the hidden, inactive zones of the screen or the upper portion's touch capabilities, even if you exposed those portions -- I'm curious to see what hardware modders manage to do with the system.

The screen issue is still a rumor, since like @Frank said, no one has one to rip apart.

It does look tempting though. I'm not a big fan of 3d. It would be nice to at least have some sort of flip cover to protect the screens.

In regards to the hinge thing, my kids have managed to break 2 original DSes, mine broke in such a way that it only worked if I held it perfectly at the correct angle otherwise it wouldn't power on or stay on, and another one stopped locking in place so you actually had to physically hold it open while playing. That is way more annoying than it sounds.

So yeah, having a little kid's DS that doesn't have a hinge is genius IMO.

They would probably keep the same screen ratios just to keep all devices the same. Especially since they are going for the low cost kid version, and don't want to kill sales for the 3ds.

I have a DSi which fits perfectly into my pocket, and I don't worry about the screens getting scratched because it folds down. The 2DS doesn't allow the same level of portability, so I'm not interested in it.

I am, however, interested in getting Pokemon X and Y. Time to grab a 3DS!

I'm so jonesed for Pokemon X and Y. Every aspect of the games they reveal looks better and better. I don't even care that Pokemon Amie is going to destroy the competitive field, probably because I haven't had time for it since 2007.

Which plant are you talking about anyhow? I finished the first world including getting the 15-20 stars required to open to the gate to the last stage. Now I'm replying all the levels over and over again so I can get all the keys required to unlock each little gate so I can get each upgrade. Of course, getting the last remaining 4 or 5 keys is a chore because I have no friggin clue where/how/when they might drop. I've 3-starred a couple of the levels already just searching around.
Sorry I missed this, it's the snow-pea. Which is one of my favorites so I did buy it for a couple bucks which I'm alright with, I just consider it the cost of the game, which is pretty reasonable.

If you play through everything you just earn the keys, they aren't anywhere specific I don't think. But that means playing the challenges after you unlock each gate so go get those stars!

And it only rarely pops up the little thing saying you can buy stuff or rate the game. I think they did an outstanding job for a FTP game. If more people did it like this we wouldn't be bitching about FTP games.

Now that I've played through the pirate area too, I have less to complain about. I think they did a good job and some of the new plants really kick ass.

Right? Some of this stuff is tough too, the cannon levels are really hard trying to get all the combos.

I want to fistfight whoever programmed how the computer shuffles your deck in Magic 2014. All mana or none, there is no middle ground.

So, Dragon Age: Inquisition has been sounding like it will be a much better game than DA2 and that Bioware has learned lessons from that mess. They showed some gameplay footage at PAX and I know it's really, really early, but it's looking really janky so far. I hope it doesn't play like a shitty Dark Souls. Hopefully it's just early game jitters (it doesn't come out for over a year).
