It's actually better than that, the entire crew was messing with Cumberbatch. He was the only one who was not in on the joke.

I remember seeing something like this with extracting 3D environments from a single photo.
If you have multiple photos (or the means to generate them), you can use a software package such as PhotoModeler, which has apparently been available commercially for over a decade.
