Minor victory thread

Sunday is discount day at the tag sale. After 4pm is 75% off.

Got a Sherwood RX-4109 stereo receiver for $15.

Now I need decent speakers to go with it.

My folks and I are going to a movie tonight (Last Vegas). This is the first time in almost 20 years that they've gone to a movie. Dad, for sure, since Mom has taken my niece to some kids movies.

The last time I've seen a movie with them? Titanic. When it was originally out in the late 90s. It was a big family outing on Boxing Day.

Mom fell asleep less than halfway through the movie.
Dad kept complaining about how hot the theatre was, how loud the sound was, and asking when the damn boat was going to sink, already.

I consider this a minor victory just for actually convincing them to go see a movie in theatres.

I'm the same guy that posted in the rant thread about how I've been out of work far longer than I thought I would be, and am now more or less broke.

There could be a light at the end of the tunnel. My last round of resumes I sent out were a bit more aggressive (not desperate at all... nope) than I would normally do, sending multiple copies and cover letters directly to HR as well as some higher ups of respective companies, including some that had turned me down before.

I just received a favorable correspondence from one, and it looks like they're actually interested in me. Best part about this is it's a job I would actually want (though at this point I'd take anything) doing something I have lots of experience with and enjoy.

It's also with the biggest major competitor of my former employer. That'll be different.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but fingers are crossed.

So according to the hotel's arrival list Neil Gaiman himself is due to check in tonight. I guess I don't know for a fact that it's him. But he's booked the biggest suite we had, and listed his home town as the one on his wiki page. So what the hell. I decided that I'd introduce myself as a fan in the least "Fan crazy" manner possible. I ordered an amenity for his room (pretty common for VIPs), wrote a card thanking him for staying with us, signed it -"Your fan" and left my business card should he require anything. I was hoping to meet him at some point during my shift, but sadly he had not checked in by the time I headed home this evening.

Delivering it personally while not wearing pants might have been a bit over the top though.

(This coming from someone who proudly carries around his Gaiman signed Kindle that I waited until 3 AM for.)

Dude is seriously a class act. You can always tell the genuinely cool people by whether they thank you themselves or send a lackey to do it for them.

He's a nice guy. I haven't seen him at all today. But I do hope he stops by before he checks out in a few days.

The Disney trip I had planned with a bunch of my friends fell through last night. (The main reason we thought we could all go was because another friend currently works at Disney World and can get herself and three others in for free, so it was insanely cheap. But she had to back out because she got an internship somewhere else and won't be able to get time off.) So, the victory you ask? We'll be able to get a full refund of the money we paid. Yay! And with the holidays and more tuition showing up in January an extra $600 dollars makes me a happy camper.

My friend wrote "Old!" on my Facebook wall today. I responded with this...

I've been waiting to do that for a very long time!

It feels like bragging to say this, but it made me feel so good that I have to share it somewhere:

So, I cried at work this week. It was kind of a good cry, but it was still embarrassing, because it happened in front of a lot of people. I got hugs and kind words from people, and these, the kindest words of all: "It happens to the best of us. And you *are* the best of us." That made me cry all over again. If I never see that person again, I'll remember her forever for the day she made me go from feeling 10 inches to 10 feet tall. Jesus. I needed that.

My mother bought me Marvel Legendary (a deck building board game) for my birthday. The real victory, though, was today my wife and I played a quick game this morning and she loved it. I'm so excited that we have a game we both really enjoyed and can pull out just about any time. :)

Bought a slightly better server for my personal needs for about $17 less than the going rate (after losing out bids for a number of similar models over the past month).
It's not a huge upgrade from the old model, but it can run the newest OS and hold almost 3x the RAM, so performance (DNS and Squid caching, but mostly our multiplayer Minecraft) should improve. Also the old one can come upstairs to be mated to our television to finally enable streaming service as well as impromptu video chatting.

The optical drive doesn't work (and with the amount of dust in it, I'm not surprised) and I discovered the HDD has some failing sectors, but the seller included an external optical burner and I can get a (200GB bigger) replacement HDD for just $40. Plus since I have plans to use it as a server, I was debating removing the optical drive and sticking a second hard drive in there anyway.

I realize I'm mortgaging a bit of my future to do this, but with no interest until well after my tax return comes in, it's technically a net win.

My MST3K 25th Anniversary DVD collection is here! The doomweasels and I are curling up with a big bowl of popcorn and ODing on riffing!

I can't get into details because my wife sometimes browses the forum, but I want to brag so bad that I'm knocking it out of the park this Christmas. I can't wait to see her open her presents next month.
