[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

The CFO lady is funny I'll admit, but she feels like a younger Lucille in terms of liking work over socializing thus coming off as cold. Stop adding characters you've all ready written Kurtz.

Scott has no real world experience, he's never worked in the real world and can't build characters off of anything but the stereotypes that are out there.

Plus, he really doesn't care anymore and isn't living near his dad anymore which means that he doesn't get the kicks in the ass that he used to get from him.

Ah man I miss the "Scott's Dad" rants, the rage was so PURE! Some good ol' fashion fourth wall breakin'.

Has anyone noticed that a staggering amount of his ideas over the last 1-2 years have been based off TV?

We just had the camera crew arc. In the past, we've had the Shark Tank ripoff arc, the ill-fated Game of Thrones montage, the Ducksheim episodes which were clearly taken from John Ralphio on Parks and Rec, the Iron Man "inspired" Christmas arc, etc. etc. Not to mention individual strips like this one or this one where a TV show is the punchline.

I could say something about that suggesting why he's not getting a lot of his strips out in a timely manner, but worse than that, it's making the strip awfully reminiscent of all those "Date Movie/Not Another Teen Movie" type movies where the writers fail to realize that merely referencing something isn't the same as telling a joke.

I'd say you've got his number pretty good there.

No, it's the camera guy they locked in the closet so they could talk to the new girl. They just never let him out.
Ahhhh - that makes sense. See? I completely forgot about the documentary crew being there in the first place. I hate having to have the joke explained to me, but, meh.

No?

...because I don't watch current television?

And yet it still somehow manages to not feel fresh and new while simultaneously not feeling nostalgic.

Well, Scott has made a career of evoking old tv shows, especially from the 80's and 90's. He even describes PvP as a ripoff of Night Court.

But he's kept at it, using newer stuff, which doesn't evoke nostalgia so much as it just seems contrived.

You know, it's kind of ironic, his news post discussing how much his new tablet helps him do his work, considering he's only "produced" 2 comics this week. I guess he's waiting until he's done watching another season of something on Netflix so he can shoehorn that show into PVP.

Scott's doing a Kickstarter for Table Titans. Look... I genuinely enjoy Table Titans. He's more interested in it than PVP and it fucking shows. But you can't get Wizards of the Coast to kick in for this? Like... you are really so hard up for cash that you can't get 30k together to print some books? You are supposed to be one of the most successful web comic artists in the industry. You hang out with Gabe and Tycho from Penny Arcade and they make so much fucking money that they started two fucking charities. You have been at this over 10 years.

How... the fuck... do you not have 30k for a buisness expense?

On the one hand, I'm surprised his business doesn't have the capital to do the printing... but on the other... I have heard the rule that you never spend your own money if you don't have to.

It's simple. Penny-Arcade did a kickstarter, so Scott has to, too.

And he'll raise it because there are a lot of guys around that are blindly optimistic...just like I used to be.

Yeah, they kickstarted a fucking podcast where they turn on a mic while they do the strenuous task of writing their thrice weekly gag comic. That's way worse than funding the book.

25 God damn dollars to ship the book outside the US though. Fuck you.

On the other hand, at least the PA podcast gives some interesting insight into their creative process, the weird fusion, tangents, and conflation that lead to their daily comics.

But this book is ridiculous: Table Titans is a promotional product for WotC, to help push D&D Next. This is a perfect pre-order bonus "feelie" for the D&D Next core set and/or convention special merchandise for them. $30,000 to produce the book is well within what WotC can spend for that level of product. Now, no one is being forced to help fund this. I get that. And I get that it makes sense to make fans pay for it up front instead of out of pocket. But I also think it's kind of insulting and will most certainly not be funding it.

Table Titans isn't bad, though the last one commits a few sins, invoking two tropes: Character Shilling (Where's Poochie/Binwin? Isn't Poochie/Binwin awesome?) and Informed Attribute. For example, in D&D 4th, Binwin's main characteristic seemed to be his ability to soak absolutely horrific levels of damage. Hell, this was essentially my introduction to the character:

The whole schtick seemed to be that he's a nigh-invulnerable idiot, like The Tick, only more beardy and less funny. And yet now he's being shilled as "a great tactician".

Really.

A character that needed a friend to point out that he was being stabbed and poisoned is a great tactician.

Fantastic.

It is possible that WotC is paying for part of the printing costs, it's not unheard of for a corporation to promise matching funds if a Kickstarter can meet certain goals to prove interest. If that's the case, I think they should be up-front about it, but it's possible that this isn't the case of fans completely funding the printing.

From reading everything, the Kickstarter is for the hardcover only, no mention of a trade dressing. My guess, WotC is funding the trade edition.

Same reason Neil Young used it to get money to make a music player he could have funded himslef. Kickstarter is for generating buzz now more than anything. It's a marketing tool.

We've come so far. Jade had her baby and nobody noticed. I only knew because I was clearing out my bookmarks and went there.

I saw it a few days ago, thought it was sweet but am in agreeance that this storyline needs a skudge more comics. And the comic right after the reveal of Kate...is Skull gettting his hand stuck in a vending machine. That's...kinda weak.

Its kinda sad. The wedding arc was built up so much and pulled off so well. This has just kinda felt rushed. I'm sure now we'll get a week three days of comics where Brent and Jade are tired and frustrated over lack of sleep.

Because Kickstarter isn't always going to be used by those who really need it. Why put up your own money (or your company's) when you can get other people to front that cash with little return expected? You're going to see people use it as something of a cash machine. It's easy, it lets you coast off your name, and it presents very little financial risk. So why not ask for $30,000 "for hardcovers".
