[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Good movie. It kind of felt like it wanted to be the last of the series, but clearly it's not.

The Untouchables: My wife wanted to watch a mob movie, so I suggested this. Kevin Costner is terrible in it, but he's terrible in other perfectly good movies too. This movie's a lot of fun; funny parts, sad parts. Robert de Niro and Sean Connery are great. Actually, a lot of the people with smaller parts are great. Only Costner sucks, but the movie overcomes that.

I watched Nacho Libre. I found it boring.
Funny enough, a friend tried to force me to watch both this and Napoleon Dynamite (two separate times, about a year apart). Both times, I looked at him about half an hour in and asked, 'So, when does this get funny?" and wound up shutting it off.

Napoleon Dynamite is weird in that it almost works better as separate sketches, rather than a uniform movie. I don't like the movie as a whole, but some of the bits are actually pretty funny.

Nacho Libre is more annoying than funny. That can be repeated for essentially every Jack Black movie, with the odd exception of the Kung Fu Panda movies. I rather like those.

I finally saw "Don't Mess With The Zohan" this weekend. It was alright. Very odd, but there were more than a few laugh out loud moments. First Adam Sandler movie I've laughed at in years.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
I enjoyed it enough. Didn't typically find myself bored through any particular part. I don't mind all the extra stuff they have put in to tie it in with Lord of the Rings. In fact a few things such as explaining why Gandalf leaves the group randomly helps make him seem like a stronger character. My only2 gripes is that 1) in Lord of the Rings it still feels like all Gandalf has is a suspicion that Sauron has returned, and in The Hobbit he's met and been tortured by the guy.
And 2) They went through all the trouble, and a prolonged action sequence, just to end the movie on, while everyone in the audience knows they wouldn't be killing the dragon that way.

I'll never understand how they managed to turn an actually really interesting, true story about a priest moonlighting as a luchadore to raise money for orphans into... that. Yes, it actually happened. His story is even more awesome because one of the kids he's helped raise is currently wrestling as his successor.

Because they turned it into a screwball comedy vehicle to let Jack Black do a terrible accent for 90 or so minutes. Imagine instead if it had been done in the same vein as "The Fighter" or "The Wrestler", as a true story. That could have been something really inspirational and interesting. Instead they have some white dude jumping around in tights yelling "NACHO" over and over again.

I saw Thor: The Dark World this weekend.
Yeah, not really impressed. The first 40 minutes dragged, and Odin seemed to have taken a few levels of JerkAss between movies. It got WAY better when Loki and Thor got involved. They had honest chemistry and just worked well together. Their scenes were by far the best of the movie. Tom Hiddleston seemed to be the only person honestly enjoying being there, and his relationship with Frigga was one of the strongest parts of the movie.

I don't know what the fuck happened with Natalie Portman. Her character was just awful, and her in the Beige CGI Sci-Fantasy Palace was way too reminiscent of Phantom Menace. She was a semi-conscious McGuffin for a good third of the movie, and her relationship with Thor was absurd. I mean, yes, Thor changed her life enormously, and they obviously had a mutual attraction, but they kissed like once after knowing each other for essentially a long weekend. Even in The Avengers, Thor was basically like, "She's a friend, thanks for letting me know she's safe, Son of Coul," and that's about it.

And what the fuck was up with Thor wearing a black poncho all the time in Asgard?

The Dark Elves sucked as villians - Malekith was boring, the plot contrived, and the only reason they were any kind of significant threat is because the Einherjar were criminally underequipped - swords and shields against blasters? Really? If the swords had also been ranged weapons (ie shooting energy out the blade like a weaker version of Odin's spear), or if they'd been equipped with any sort of ranged weapon, the elves would have been mowed down in moments.

It also suffered from an excessive use of "Real Is Brown" / "Serious Is Grey" palette. One of the best things about the Marvel movies was their use of bright color - the climactic battle in The Avengers is done is broad daylight with vivid colors, as is Winter Soldier. But this was all blue-grey-brown muted colors, which literally dulled the effect - it didn't look superheroic, it looked like every other disaster flick out there.

It's kind of sad that one of the better moments of the film was basically Richard, the one-scene wonder, played by the hilarious Chris O'Dowd.

I prefer The Dark World over the first Thor, but that's because I found the first Thor film to be mediocre.

Also, Cap's cameo in TDW made the whole movie worth it for me.

I also thought Thor 2 was better than Thor 1. Not as good as Iron Man 1 or 2, but I felt kinda mehhhh about Thor 1, and felt much better about Dark World.

Natalie Portman in that movie kind of felt like watching a distant cousins bored SO at a family reunion. Vaguely present but no one knows why. And no one would care if they weren't there.

I'd say both Thor movies are better than either of the Iron Man sequels. Definitely better than The Incredible Hulk, despite Norton being in it.
Oh, I disagree. Iron Man 1 and 2 are 2nd and 3rd in line behind only Avengers as the best of the Marvel movies so far.

Since finally catching Captain America on Saturday morning, I've been on a Marvel Binge. Starz gave me The Dark World Saturday night. Sunday morning, The Avengers on Netflix, and finally Starz again with IM3 last night. Still haven't gotten around to IM2 yet.

Iron Man 2 was a trailer for the Avengers.

It's kind of funny that it took 3 tries to make a movie that had a conflict that would have existed outside of Tony Stark life. The first two have the same problem as the first Fantastic Four movie. Protagonist cleans up after messes he makes, gets praised for it.
