[TV] Winter HAS COME! - A Game of Thrones

I don't know what is going on in this episode, but
Brienne and the Hound beating on each other was kind of hilarious. :p

The whole.... Tyrion thing... was lackluster... I dunno... maybe it's the liberties they took to change the settings/words.... but in the end... I didn't get to hear the phrase I wanted to hear at the end of that event.

I agree. They dropped a whole dialogue with Jamie and Tyrion, and it made the whole next scene kind of... less impactful?

Oh, so they went through with it. Good.

That's less good. Some of the things Tyrion said to Jaime in the book were really important.

Yeah... I remember a lot more happening in the book that seemed kind of important... and this part, which was one of the book's biggest crescendos, seemed rather subdued and slow.

I would also like to say "Jamie and Cersei what the fuck is going on there?"

and

"Didn't they just cancel out a shit load of Brienne's story or is this the excuse she will have to keep wandering around?"

It also seems like they cut out the Knight of the Laughing Tree story? Which is kind of giant background for... certain other things?

In the book Tyrion was released by Jamie only to be told that his first wife was not actually a whore but a girl who loved him. Tywin ordered Jamie to lie to Tyrion. This lead to Tyrion, heart broken, being forced to watch as every guard raped his wife and then raping his wife himself. Remembering back to the horrible event in this new context, Tyrion lashes out at Jamie. Tyrion decides to confront his father, furious about what Tywin did to his first wife. He Finds Shae in his fathers bed and kills her, surprised and betrayed. He then confronts his father with the crossbow in his office while he's sitting at his desk and asks why he lied to him about his first wife. The word whore and the majority of his motivation is his first innocent wife who was made a whore against her will. Why would they change this for the show?! This is Tyrion's entire motivation for his killing spree and all he thinks about in ADWD. "Where do whores go?"also "Apparently Lannisters don't shit gold." as Tywin shat himself after he got shot.

Sorry for the rant I just think this is the biggest emotional change they have made on the show and it seems like a huge missed opportunity.

The biggest tragedy in this show is how they have almost ruined Tyrion's character. The actor is really good and is doing a great job but what awesomeness he'd have been if the countless changes to how he's relevant to the storyline weren't changed needlessly. Now he got somewhat robbed from his star moment.

OH, also the WAY Tyrion lashes out at Jamie is really important to the plot... since
That is when Jamie learns that Cersei was essentially whoring herself out for politcal favors.

Not to mention

After Jaime helps him be free, he lies to Jaime that he killed Joffrey after all.

Also, IIRC, Tywin was coming off the privy in the book too.

I think you guys are starting to "Lord of the Rings" this thing. It's an adaption. It's not a scene by scene play of the books. Clearly they are going different directions with characters and plot lines while keeping most of the major themes intact. And honestly, thats not only necessary but good considering they have to deal with the next 2 books and they are boring as hell on page.

Here's how this works: As they try to figure out how to condense something down from 8000000000000000000000000000000 pages and 9000000000000000 characters they have to cut shit. They have to narrow it down to a couple things. The universe in the TV show MUST be smaller.

Now, it can be argued that they aren't doing a good job of it, and thats totally understandable. While I thought what happened with Tyrion last night (all of it) was perfectly fine it wasn't as good as what happened in the books. I'm 100% with everyone on that. But from a technical adaption standpoint? It worked perfectly and it fit the arc they've created just fine.

EDIT: On that note, I realize that most people get upset when something love gets messed with at all during an adaption and that I'm weird in that I LOVE seeing how writers adapt stuff and the decision they make, even if I don't agree with it.

The AvClub had a great review of the episode (which the reviewer really liked) but he had this funny observation at the end:
In “disturbing sexual politics” news, Cersei declares, “I love my brother! I love my lover!” to a man who raped her back in episode three, and then the two of them reunite. Okay, then. Guess you two kids worked it out.
Kind of makes me think the writers actually meant for THAT scene to come off way less "rapey" than it actually did. If thats true then thats a spectacular failure on their part. If they DID mean for it to be super "rapey" than they really botched what happened tonight. See, this is a great example of a failure to keep themes together here. Look, if you want to make Jaime a complicated figure, thats fine, but here's the thing: When people rape other people the audience stops thinking of them as the "good guy".[DOUBLEPOST=1402926829,1402926755][/DOUBLEPOST]
Since the show skipped 2 books worth of Bran's journey, we won't see him again until 2017.
Well, thats probably ok. Honestly I'm looking forward to them adapting the next 2 books. I think they will do a good job of boiling down chapters and chapters of boring stuff to some strong ideas. Hopefully anyway.

The writers have said multiple times that they didn't think it was a rape scene. Which is very disturbing on a lot of levels.

I didn't mind some of the changes to last night's episode, but the conversation that Jamie and Tyrion had was pretty integral to Jamie's story arc, and would have been quite fitting for him to learn after Cersei's scene. I am also not really a fan of how they are making Cersei a more sympathetic character, because I find myself wondering what will happen with her story arc next season.

All adaptations should be treated like alternative universes. That fight between Brienne and Hound was fantastic and I'm glad that things have actually happened in the Bran parts.

Sure, I'm bummed about LSH not showing up this season - but it makes sense that they didn't want to pay an actress if they weren't going to start really using her until next season.

Also, I always thought Tyrion's drive to find 'where whores go' was such a weak motivation anyway.

I'm just kinda bummed that it's now dead certain there will be no Coldhands in the TV adaptation. I raised an eyebrow when he didn't show up during Sam's rescue of Gilly, and now they've skipped over him helping Bran get to the tree.

Oh man! All these Stalfos are popping up! I bet Cold Hands comes in and saves them. Good, Bran is going into Hodo mode. That will help cold hands when he saves them.

Jojen is in trouble! Time for cold hands to swoop in and....OK well maybe not.

...can cold hands shoot fire balls? I mean maybe but....oh its a kid.

Well...maybe jojen will be raised as a good zombie....nope.

I wonder what Arya is doing.
